View Full Version : Kremlin Cup reports

Oct 1st, 2003, 08:45 PM
Continuing the two year tradition ( ;) ) I'm posting reports from the Kremlin Cup (illustrations to come later). Didn't go there on Monday and Tuesday, so no reports and pictures for these days. I'll be posting them gradually, as they take a while to write (I'm slow), so they'll be posted a few days later than the day that is reported.

Qualifying. Saturday. (mostly ATP)

I arrived there rather early, the first people I saw were Marlene Weingartner walking out of the locker room and Sylvia Farina-Elia going in (the locker room is just close to the entrance, it's not that I was spying ;) ).

After walking around checking the schedule and the draws, I sat at Court 3, where a friend of mine Alexandr Sikanov was to play :) Sasha won the first set easily and it seemed like an easy match, but no, it went to the third, he was down 1-4 but managed to come back and win the match in the tie-break. He should have won the match in the second, he had a big advantage (a break and break points), but then just fell apart, as he told me afterwards he got scared.

After his match I went to Court 2 where Tina Pisnik, whom I really like, was to play against Vanessa henke. Tina was down 2-5 in the first set, tied the match to make it 5-5, but then lost her serve and the set rather easily, without fighting. She found her game in the second, played really smart, clever tennis. Won the next two sets rather easily. There was nothing Vanessa could do, she started to, more or less, read Tina's game by the end of the match, when it was too late...

Fabiola Zuluaga crashed her opponent, the very small in size Yuliana Fedak, who had nothing to offer against Fabiola's power.

Saw Lina's brother Alexander Krasnorutsky play. For his age, he's incredibly good, much brighter than most other young Russians I saw. Lina was there supporting him...

Another friend of mine, Vladimir Melnikov, also won his match without playing well though :)

The players I saw just walking around: Kafelnikov, Tulyaganova, Labadze, Douchevina, Davydenko, Safin, Schalken, Safina, C. Black , W.Black, Chela...

Thank you, Nina. :)

Did you go today? I hope you saw the Bovina/Cappy match. :)

yes, I did. Saw the whole match. Wasn't too impressed with Jennifer in the end, it seemed she didn't really care about the match result, well done Elena anyway.

Qualifying. Sunday

Briefly about some of the matches I saw:

Fattakhetdinova vs Beygelzimer

This match was supposed to be played on Saturday but was postponed as Gulnaraís plane from Batumi was delayed, it was not surprising she wasnít playing very well, she couldnít prepare for the tournament properly, had very little time to practice on the surface.

Everyone there was talking about Anna and during her match almost all the good and well-known coaches were present. I wasnít too impressed actually; she plays from the baseline, hits rather hard with good placement. For me, Tinaís game is muuuch more interesting to watch. In the second set, she gained confidence and created amazing rallies. She kept playing the same combination from time to time: a drop shot and then a lob, and was winning almost all points even when the lobs were really bad, I guess it had to do with the lighting on the stadium, it blinds you when you play an overhead shot. From time to time, Tina was joking and exchanging smiles with three girls ( Matevzic and co, one of them is probably her coach, I donít know ), who were there for all of her matches and with whom she seems to be very good friends with. Anyway, she was in control and won the match.

Sikanov- Cherkasov

The match I was most interested in, the result was disappointing. Sikanov was leading 4-1 in the third set and had breakpoints, but then just started making errors, probably got nervous again, Cherkasov is the player who doesnít give you any cheap points, he runs down everything, stays on the defense heís very experienced obviously, and just takes every opportunity. He did so in this match and won.

Alicia played pretty badly, I expected more, after seeing her at the start of this year on TV. Here none of her weapons were working, she didnít serve well (the 1st serve percentage must have been very low), couldnít hit more than three shots without an error, not that much power. Need to give credit to Julia, she seemed very fresh, despite playing her 1st rd match on the same day, definitely deserved to win the match.

Vova played one very good game- the first one. It was the last he won the first set, not that Prinosil had a huge advantage but he made a lot less errors and knew perfectly well what he was doing. Melnikov can play an amazing rally (he has beautiful technique) and then just switch off, hit shots that go a meter long, I donít know whatís going threw his head. The match wasnít one-sided, the games were quite close, but Prinosil won all the important points. The second setís score was a bit closer 6-3. David is a better player out of the two so it wasnít a real surprise.

Saw Jennifer Capriati practice with Anna SmaÖPistolesi. Also Stefano was walking around there, stopping to greet and chat with some people: Magui Serna (they spoke Spanish), Sitak brothers (Artem Sitak practiced in America for some time; I guess thatís why he knows them)ÖHe was very friendly.

he's grown quite a bit
Nina, how tall would you say he is ??

Oct 4th, 2003, 06:02 PM
Some more photos...

Oct 4th, 2003, 06:05 PM
very hard to say, he did seem shorter than his opponents, although not much.
Probably around 1.75 m, I'm not sure....

Oct 4th, 2003, 07:10 PM
he's still got some growing to go :) as he's only just 16, he's got time.
Lina's 1m75, so Alex should make it close to 1m90.
