Ok don't shoot me if it's wrong :o:)

qual. points: 11.75
winning three rounds: 49

bonuspoints qual:
-def. Marosi (167): 2
-def. Sucha (118): 4
-def. Pisnik (48): 10

bonuspoints maindraw:
-def. Shaugnessy(17): 23
-def. Stevenson (33): 15

Total= 114

Callens looks forward to her moment in the spotlights

With all the talk of the supremacy of Belgian tennis at the moment, and the plaudits rightly being heaped on the World’s top two players, Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin-Hardenne, you have to feel a little sorry for the nation’s No.3 player, veteran Fed Cupper Els Callens.

Callens, 33, has been a Fed Cup stalwart for years and has won more Fed Cup doubles matches than any other Belgian, yet the success of her more illustrious countrywomen meant that she seemed destined to be in the shadows. That could all change come the semifinals, with Callens named in the squad to face the USA and, as the highest-ranked member of that squad, likely to play as the No. 1 singles player and in the doubles as well.

This is unlikely to faze the jovial Callens.

“It is normally a bit tough to get a singles berth at the moment,” she laughs.

“I’ve had some good singles wins but of course I don't usually play because it’s obvious the two best players in the world should play.

"I’m the third person and I always have to be ready ...it’s not like I can totally relax. I always have to be ready. Belgian tennis is on such a high at the moment. You can see it at the Grand Slams, before there didn’t used to be any fans coming to watch us and now, especially with Kim No.1 and Justine No.2; it’s a great tennis boom. Everyone is really into it and is watching all the semis and finals on TV.

"I think every little kid in Belgium wants to play tennis right now. It’s great for the sport and great for the country.”

Callens says she loves team tennis and although she is disappointed the semifinals against the USA and the final will not be played in Belgium, she can’t wait to take on the Americans.

“I always like Fed Cup, it’s a great atmosphere and playing the US is playing the team to beat,” she says.

“If you take the best players in both teams then Belgium and the United States could be seeded one and two and it’s a shame they are playing in the semifinals. I think it will be a great meeting and it’s definitely going to be difficult because, like us, the US is a good team which sticks together and wants to succeed. They will be motivated to beat us.”

Callens says that she is looking forward to the pressure of representing her country, even if this time she will effectively be leading the team.

“It’s a team sport and I love playing in such a good team,” she says.

“Most of the time at tournaments you are playing for yourself and for Fed Cup you play for a team and a country and so it really does matter when you lose because you let your team down. It puts extra pressure on you but I like that kind of pressure because when you get a great spirit in a team it really is the best feeling.”

Els won 6-3 7-6(5) against Shaughnessy :bounce:

Callens Pulls off Memorable Win over Shaughnessy

The USA’s expected passage into the Fed Cup final hit a roadblock in Moscow, when Meghann Shaughnessy ran into an inspired Els Callens in the first of the reverse singles.

The 33-year-old Belgian’s 63 76 win means the Americans are still 2-1 ahead and still very much favourites to reach the weekend’s final. But the combination of Shaughnessy proving a little sluggish after her three-hour 11-minute marathon against Kirsten Flipkens on Wednesday and an aggressive Callens prolonged the life of this increasingly unpredictable semifinal.

Though the tennis was not of the highest standard, the spectacle was. Several dozen Russian schoolkids made for a good if somewhat untennislike atmosphere, which was further charged up by Callens’ team-mates – Flipkens, Elke Clijsters and Caroline Maes – throwing souvenir tennis balls into the crowd at every change of ends and orchestrating cheering for the Belgian team.

It was an atmosphere in which Callens thrived. Building on the confidence gained from having beaten Shaughnessy on two tiebreaks in Leipzig just two months ago, she attacked from the start, breaking the American in the second game. Not only did she serve so much better than against Lisa Raymond in the opening rubber of the semifinal, thumping down 10 aces, but she got to the net much more, and moved her opponent around the court. With Shaughnessy clearly not moving the way she did against Flipkens, there were rich pickings for the Belgian’s backcourt strategy.

When Callens broke in the second game of the third set making superb use of her forehand, Shaughnessy looked sunk. But with Callens seemingly closing in on victory, Shaughnessy broke back for 4-4 with probably her best forehand of the match, an in-to-out winner off the return of serve. That should have signalled a comeback for the American, especially when she had Callens 0-30 at 5-6, but the Belgian played four excellent points to force a tiebreak.

Shaughnessy took the early lead, but on the fifth point a Callens forehand was ruled in when Shaughnessy thought it was clearly out. Her protests to umpire Andreas Egli earned her a rare warning for unsportsmanlike conduct after she belted a ball away in anger. The incident turned the tide back Belgium’s way, and the overall deficit was reduced to 1-2 when a Shaughnessy backhand went long to give Callens the tiebreak 7-5.

“I think the win I had against her in Leipzig was very important in giving me confidence,” Callens said. “Also, I find her style of game suits me much better. She plays a more steady game with less variety, and she has a pattern on her serve which makes me know what to expect.”

Shaughnessy admitted her efforts against Flipkens had sapped her strength, but said she was confident of putting the defeat behind her if the USA reaches Saturday’s final. “I have to learn from my mistakes and move on,” she said.

At 5-4 in the second set, Elke Clijsters left the arena, the first signal that Belgium was playing her instead of Flipkens in the fourth rubber against Lisa Raymond. Callens said Flipkens was very stiff after her efforts against Shaughnessy, so the decision to replace her with Kim Clijsters’ younger sister was an easy one for Belgium’s captain Ivo van Aken.

Of course, Elke lost, so it is USA in the final.

My thoughts exactly. I think it's pretty logical that Kirsten gets a wildcard because of her junior results. But is there any reason why Elke should get the wildcard instead of Els? :( With all respect for Elke, but she still hasn't proven anything since she won the doubles juniors title at the US Open... IMO Elke isn't ready yet to beat a top-50 player. Especially when you take a look at matches when she already received a wild card: it's pretty embarassing :o

A short reaction from Els' mother:

Els Callens krijgt geen wildcard voor
het WTA-toernooi van Antwerpen. Toer-
nooidirecteur Bob Verbeeck geeft de
voorkeur aan Elke Clijsters en Kirsten
Flipkens.

jeugd", meent Bob Verbeeck. "Bovendien
zal Callens misschien in het dubbel aan
de zijde van Navratilova kunnen spelen.

It a very bad thing Bob decided here  If I was Els I wouldn't even play doubles in Antwerp!

Got an e-mail from B. Verbeeck

Geachte,

I got a mail adressed to Els:

Beste Mevrouw Callens,

Succes

Well I have seen Elke playing. She has come to Edinburgh for an event and she was not on the practice courts once, whereas other much-derided players (i.e. Jaslyn Hewitt) were out there pounding the courts every day, working hard to get better.

When she comes and spends time with her boyfriend, has a match, loses, and then leaves what else can i say? I am not saying she doesn't work at all - i am saying she doesn't work AS hard. I have nothing against her, and maybe i'm wrong, but i do think that Els has more claim to the wildcard.

Small article in today's news paper:

Els Callens loses in 1st round

Els Callens' singles tournament is over. After a good start against Cara Black, she lost the 3rd set and the match 6-2 3-6 3-6. The player from Antwerp will still play doubles with Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova. Yesterday's loss might have been the 33-year-old's last singles match ever in Melbourne.
"I have not decided yet, if I will stop this year or not. I will probably make that decision at the end of this season. I will still do my best to have the best year possible."
Going back to qualifying tournaments for slams is not an option. Therefore she will try to stay in the top-100.
Els Callens is also still angry with the tournament director of Antwerp and his decision to give a WC to Elke Clijsters.
"I guess I will play qualifying then... The doubles with Navratilova has been cancelled by the way. I have no idea whom I will play with, if I will play in doubles." *she sighs*

Doubles with Henin
At the Olympics in 2000, Els won a bronze medal in Sydney.
"I have not received any news from the BOIC (Belgian Olympic Commitee). I have not asked Justine to play with me yet. She will not want to play with me I think... And I cannot think of any other player I could play doubles with... Maybe I can still try to play singles at the Olympics."

arn
Jan 20th, 2004, 10:28 AM
I think she should really ask to play doubles with justine at the olympics! What's the harm in asking? It's not like she will lose something with it. And I'm sure If Justine says to the BOIC she wants to play doubles with Els, I'm sure they let them go.

Just seconds after our interview, Els started to cry
:awww:

It all becomes too much for Els...
-No Olympics
-No wildcard in Antwerp, her hometown
-3 losses in 2004

"If I thumble out of the top-100, I quit. At my age, I don't want to play qualifying. I want to be directly in the maindraw of the Grand Slams"
"I haven't heard anything from the BOIC, bad sign I suppose. And via via I heard Justine doesn't want to play doubles. Angry? no, dissapointed."
"I'm really pissed off at Bob Verbeeck, I didn't want to come to Antwerp at first, a protest, but who I gonna give a pleasure with that... (bad translation  ) Playing doubles there? Depends with who. When Verbeeck said I could play doubles with Martina Navratilova, I already did know she wouldn't come. I hope -for his image- and for me, he will find a great alternative"

For its 10th birthday, the Feminine Open of Touquet had a dream commitment list with for example, Schiavone, Loit, Barna, Mikaelian, Vakulenko or Els Callens. Els is already promised a main draw wild card for 2005 by Bob Verbeeck. Els said she'll definitely keep playing until then (if she's healthy). She might play her farewell tournament in her hometown...:D

Els needs a good win! Badly :(

Seriously, she once said - when someone asked her "when will you retire?" - that she'd retire as soon as she has to play qualifying at the slams again. The ways things are going now, she WILL have to play qualifying at the US Open :(
If she doesn't win a match or 2 at Rosmalen or Wimbledon she'll retire IMO :awww:

Though Els had a disappointing def. against M. Sanchez Lorenzo. One shouldn't forget the fast courts have been slowed down. As a result you have to many overranked players esp. in men's tennis. If the fast courts are slowed down, then wouldn't call red clay a fair surface. IMO, it's great to have big servers in the game, who are weaker on clay. By slowing down the fast courts you have a lack of variety too. It's right too have the slow red clay but then you should have fast courts too (not slowed down).I'm afraid that the natural grass courters won't do too well at Wimbledon.

I think they should shorten the season and hve equal time on each surface:)

I do not agree  (for once ;))

There are too many hard court tournaments. We should have 1/4 played on HC, 1/4 on clay, 1/4 on grass & 1/4 on carpet indoors.
But what do we get?
70% on HC, 25% on clay & 5% on grass

It's sad that Els can't even win a match on grass these days. She's never been a force on clay, but grass.. I mean she's been to the 3rd round of Wimbledon, and we all remember that 7-6 7-6 match against Serena :worship:

Last time Els played Suarez, Els won. On the contrary, Suarez is on a lucky run the past 24 months, needs ages to win an indoor match. Still say Els is the better player on fast surfaces. Hopefully Els win create an upset. Whatever happens the past 2 years, Els isn't 2 years long without a win on indoor carpet, Suarez yes.

Els lost, score was too high. Kim/Justine absenth pffft @this years Wimbledon. Must say the quality of men's tennis on grass is much higher. Really think M. Stich has a point to critizise women's tennis in debt on grass.

Like the way Els plays tennis, the gutsy serve & volley. Hopefully she'll have some good results in the indoor tournaments.
Obatafan, if you're here, my biggest Wimbly disappointment was Anna C. missing out om the Wimbly-Qual. The main reason Surbiton didn't count for the Wimbly-Qual. She played twice on grass twice reached the final against Kirsten/Morigami. Well, really M. Stich has point what Castano produced against Navratilova ppft. Because of such a player Anna C. missed Wimbly. Rather have some clay courters boycot Wimbly as it was in the past.
