View Full Version : Why I hate the Emmys

They always reward the same tired shows year in and year out. Its pathetic.

James Gandolfini is a mobster with family problems. Edgy. Lets give him another award and screw the people who do something different like Kiefer Sutherland. Hell, the only way that Chiklis won last year was because Gandolfini wasn't eligible. And Chiklis is no Kiefer Sutherland.

The West Wing? Ok, we're Hollywood liberal fuckwads we have to give an award to a Hollywood liberal fuckwad show. Nevermind something as original as 24.

And "Everybody Loves Raymond"? Says who? He sucks and I don't like him. How many times has that show won now? That show is starting to be like Frasier and it wins every year for no good reason. Do you realize that the greatest sitcom EVER (Seinfeld) only won one time. One time. One time, not even a measly two. Ponderous, fucking ponderous.

They did make their different pick of the year though in giving the Emmy to that guy from Wings.

Title: Why I hate the Emmys

Because it's just another chance for Hollywood/"the industry" to get together and self-wank for a few hours. It's like one big circle jerk in endless cycles.

I actually came to this conclusion at the Oscars a few years ago. Why do I care how "the industry" decides to reward itself? And all these new award shows popping up all over the place kinda devalues the idea of being rewarded for good work, no?

I agree. I don't understand how someone can win several times, unless of course the work that the actor did that year was extremely exceptional. And why did Debra Messing win?! No offense, but she laughs after every joke she delivers on the show and I found her character to be even more annoying this year than ever (Are we to believe
that Grace was really married?!?!) Puh-leez!

I don't watch Will & Grace but she was pretty much the same way in all the Ned & Stacy reruns I saw every morning on USA my senior year in college. At least they spread the wealth around in that category. What about Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy? Do they even bother watching the other nominees or did they get a bargain a few years back on Doris Roberts nameplates in bulk?

you like the show. you know it's excellent. that's all that matters.

anyway, you don't want it to win emmy's because emmy's = larger audience. larger audience = sanitizing and dumbing down of material...because, most of the general public are dumb and don't like controversial subject matter.

"24" is better without emmy's.

It is going to get bigger ratings this year regardless. The DVDs keep selling like mad and gets more people into the show. Anyway, people watching is much better than the scenario that almost took place midway through the first season where it was on the verge of cancellation.

Well, I watched the 02 Aussie Open men's final, but the only reason I could was because it was on at like 11 pm and everyone was out getting stoned and/or drunk :)

Incidentally, they were watching the Roddick/Nalbandian match. I walked by and stared at the TV for a moment, then exclaimed, "No! Karmatic justice must be served!" (Nalby had just lost the 3rd set) I think the people watching gave me a very strange look

I did get into PTI over the summer, when it came on after the Wimbly coverage. I find it amusing more than anything else, but I like listening to people debate, even if it's over stupid shit :D

Yes, I like F1. Admittedly, I didn't get into it before this year, but apparently I am pretty persuasive as I have convinced most of the folks at the Cult to start cheering for Kimi Raikkonen. He's my fave. I am deathly against Ferrari and the Shumis, especially Michael (for reasons I'm sure you could understand ;)).

Actually, Everybody Loves Raymond has never won for best comedy series before. I don't really like it much myself, but I guess if you are married with kids it's the bomb.

I loved that the West Wing (and I don't even like TWW) won best drama just to shaft the Sopranos from sweeping. What a foul show to be showering awards on :(

The biggest injustice of the night was for drama supporting actress. Tyne. Daly. Tyne? Daly? the hell? The woman has won like 42 Emmys and they have to give her ANOTHER one for that haggard show, Judging Amy??? Lena Olin (Alias) was THE best thing on TV last season and she was robbed. Robbed, I tell ya.

Ferrari = But maybe that's just my personality type. I like rooting for the underdog to take over the giant. When I started watching tennis seriously, it was the same. I wanted someone to take over Sampras, then Hewitt, now Roddick. Kimi's still a little underdeveloped as a driver but he's immensely talented. All he needs is a bit of experience. :o at your dad calling him Haakanen, those are some big shoes to fill!

But, at least I have cultivated a small following for Kimi, based almost solely on the fact that he's Finnish :hearts:

I hate award shows period. I used to love the ESPY's because it was done by the people at ESPN. It wasn't "all Hollywood" bullshit. It was just ALL SPORTS! No skits, no stupid things to say before announcing. Now even the Espy's have gone Hollywood.

This was probably the first time I watched one from start to finish in a long time. I was really bored. The one funny thing was at the beginning when Larry Sanders said something about his worst nightmare is having the "Queer Eye for a Straight Guy" cast come into his house and look him up and down and say "your good" or something like that. It was funny. Other then that he looked scared out of his mind. The skits were all stupid. The only winner I was hoping for was AMAZING RACE getting best Reality series! I love that show.

MY FAVE shows:
CSI, Without a Trace, Agency, District, Six Feet Under (first two seasons) Amazing Race , and Survivor

Steam-I am completely shocked Seinfeld only one one fucking Emmy for best comedy. That show IS still one of the funniest things on tv, and I laugh at every joke I've heard a million times on it.

Alias and CSI are my two favorite shows to watch, and neither get any awards. Jennifer Garner is a much better and more entertaining actress then a drunken momb-wife and god knwos who else. CSI is one of the most innovative shows around and deserves more recognition. I've never watched 24, so I can't comment on it.

Yeah, thats pretty much why the Emmys suck. Seinfeld won in '93, its breakout year. That was the season where Jerry and George had the deal with NBC and included the Contest. I will not argue over any of the years before this since Seinfeld hadn't yet hit its stride. However, the five years after this that Seinfeld was on the Emmy went to Frasier all five years if I recall correctly. Thats so fucking pathetic. Frasier is an ok show and all but Seinfeld will have a much longer shelf life. For them to not recognize Seinfeld for its greatness when it was on, when now they all praise it as one of the greatest shows ever shows what a bunch of stooges the voters are.
