I'm talking from the point of view of a fan.

Mine are:

Yugoslavian volleyball team winning gold at the Olympics in Sidney '00. That was joy!!! :bounce: :D

Our women's handball team winning bronze at the World Championships '01. First the heartbreaking loss to Norway in the semis (damn you Cecile Leganger  ), then great comeback against Denmark in the bronze play-off. One of the rare times I cried of happiness because of sports...

Cuban women's volleyball team winning their 3rd consecutive Gold at the Sydney Olympics. I'm not even particularly interested in volleyball, but I loved those girls, and I LOVE Cuba! :hearts:

Also probably Cathy Freeman's Gold medal run.

It's not related to a particular sporting moment, but one of my happiest memories is, as an eight-year-old, slowly collecting the entire album of Panini stickers for the Italia 90 World Cup

hmm....mine are all tennis or hockey related.

1999 Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals...up into the wee hours of the morning and seeing Brett Hull flip the puck over a floppin' Dominik Hasek (yes, his foot was in the crease, but noone got off their asses and made them get back on the ice, so tough fuckin' luck :p) to win the Stanley Cup. :)

2000 Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals...at the end of the game, ESPN panned around old Reunion Arena and turned the volume up on the crowd noise whom were all chanting "Ed-die's Bet-ter *clap clap clapclapclap*" over and over and over...brings a tear to me eye :)

2000 U.S. Open men's singles final - seeing my boy Marat Safin stave off the only break points against his serve in the final game...and that screaming cross-court passing shot to win the match...and the absolute joy that erupted across his face...:) wonderful day!!

When in my senior year in High School. The football team went undefeated and won the state Championships for the first time. I went to every home game. There was 7,000 people at that final game (it was held in my town) and my town only has a population of 5,500. The guy next to me had driven from the mountains of NC and he never went Whiteville High School. He just wanted to be part of the atmosphere. The people behind me drove all the way down from Virginia and my town is on the SC border. I got to the game like an hour and a half before start time because I knew that if you didn't get there early you wouldn't get in. Anyway the game was awesome we were losing until the 2nd half. Our Star player played offense and defence. He scored the winning touchdown and made the game saving play when the other team was going in for a 2 pt conversion. I still hear that hit he layed on that running back. Oh I think he is playing in his 13th year in the NFL if he didn't retire this year.

Seeing guys win at that level when you have known them since 2nd grade (kindergarten for most) is an awesome feeling.

My 2nd greatest experience was a couple of years ago (like 4) when my high school basketball team won the state Championships. They are held in the Dean Dome (UNC-Chapel Hill) so you can imagine how lost we feel in such a big stadium coming from our little town. Well they estimated our crowd at around 5,000. I was living in Winston-Salem and had to drive down there. A local business provided the fans with pom poms in the school colors. The opposition didn't even know what hit em... I tell you what the tv news people said, "It looks like Whiteville came out to support there guys, I mean ALL of Whiteville..."

Tied for 2nd is when we won the State Championships the next year despite losing our star player, Chris Wilcox (who went on to play for Univ. of Maryland and win the national Championship) to an evil coach at a Raleigh High School his senior year...:fiery: Oh that school lost in the 2nd round of the playoffs. That state championship was SWEET!!!!

3rd best, Michael Jordan winning his first NBA championship and crying like a baby on the trophy. :)

First ones that come to mind...

Canada winning Gold in Hockey in Salt Lake. Both the mens and womens was great, but the country literally blew up over the mens... I'm not sure I'll ever again see that many people going nuts, playing road hockey, flag waving, beeping their horns, smiling at each other, acting like general idiots (in a good way);)

I remember Donovan Bailey winning the 100m in Atlanta, and Canada winning the 4 by 100 relay after being pretty much dismissed by the press...

Both Ferrero and Justine finally winning Roland Garros, I *almost* cried both times :)

Goran winning Wimbledon... I wasn't a fan, but damn, that was something else!

This very weekend watching Canada beat Brazil in Davis Cup... not a singles player in the top 200 and they made it all the way to the World Group. I almost cried when Frank won the deciding rubber ;)

1) when I was at the world championship speed skating in Heerenveen in '99. The whole day was great, especially when Erben Wennemars (one of the speedskaters) was cheering up the fans :)

2) Goran winning Wimbledon. I did enjoy watching him always. But that year he was really funny. I remember that he didn't want a lot of interviews, but when Jacco Elthing (commentator of Dutch tv) was there, Gorans always walked to him for an interview. Even while Goran wasn't my fav player anymore during that Wimlbedon, it was the best Wimbledon for me ever. (Even better as Roger winning this year, and I'm a big Roger fan)

3) Davis Cup this year Holland vs. Switserland. Roger was playing an amazing match against Sjeng, and Michel did win the 5th match to defeat Holland.

1. Sally Gunnell winning 400mH gold (and getting a then world record) at the 1993 World Athletics Championships... the race between her and Sandra Farmer-Patrick was so close and I was crazy about Sally so I was all happy when she won.

2. Monica's 1995 comeback against Martina

3. Monica winning the 1996 AO

4. Jonathon Edwards whole 1995 season in the Triple Jump. I was watching when he jumped around 18.50m in the European Cup (wind assisted) and it came from NOWHERE... up until then he was a 17.70ish jumper at best and then... BOOM! Incredible! Then when he official got the world record and the world title it was nice too.

5. Michael Johnson 1996 Olympic 200m final. WOW!

6. Monica beating Venus 2002 AO... I was sooooo happy cause I thought she would win the title after that... yeah right...

7. Manchester United winning the European Cup (and the treble) in 1999. It was AMAZING. And it may make me the spawn of satan but I LOVE Man Utd. Those late goals had me jumping around my living room like a crazy woman.

8. Virtually every Paula Radcliffe race in the past 18 months

9. Cathy Freeman winning the 2000 Olympics 400m final

10. Marion Jones 2000 Olympic 100m final.

I havent had all that many to be honest! The only ones I can think of are......

* Rogi winning Wimbly this year (after telling all my friends that he would become Wimbly champ one day ;))

* Scud recovering from his latest kknee problem, reaching the Wimbly final and finishing the year in the top 10

* now being a young Liverpool fan I haven't experienced some of the great memories like my "older" Pool fans ;) so for me I guess its probably winning the 5 trophies in 2000/01 (especially coming from behind in the FA cup final against Arsenal with about 8 minutes to go. Sorry Cilla :p)and qualifying for champions league although we never got very far :o

Oh my...I have so many...

When Monica Seles won her first Grand Slam. :worship: I cried!!! :tape:

When Venus Williams won her first grand slam. My flat was on fire!!! We were all crying!

When Serena got her French Open title. Because it was so long since her 1st Grand Slam win and she proved that she was the queen of the clay courts!! I cried again.

When Cathy Freeman won her Gold Medals in Sydney. It was an amazing feeling for me.

When Kim Clijsters won the Masters last year, beating Serena. It was just incredible and Kim was so happy! :)

I have more...but these are the ones that come quickly to mind! ;)

My best sports memory was truly a "life altering event"; 90 minutes that felt like they happened in slow motion. :)

Scoring a Half-Volley Blast of a Goal against Voorhees (sp) in the first half of a home soccer match right in front of our cheerleaders (two of them actually shed tears cheering for me  ).

Made me look like a "soccer stud" for the rest of the year in their eyes.

Then being violently double marked the rest of the match. It was the first time I'd been double teamed on the soccer pitch.

It made me feel like I was frickin' Pele!!!

Looking like a star and feeling like a star!!!

The ultimate image boost in High School

Meeting and talking to Anna Kournikova, watched her for a week and she was amazing. She gave me a sweet smile and a wonderful thank you when I handed her a stuffed puppy dog, I had to get my favorite girl something, I only had one chance to meet her in life and that was it. The smile and thank you was all I needed to walk away happy. It was really cool, she pretty much told me she was to busy to talk or anything for three days and then she walked right up and signed a picture for me, I gave her the dog after she started to walk away, I called her name and she turned around and then she was confused about why I was handing her something and I was scared to death. But when I told her it was for her she hugged it tight and turned to me and smiled saying thank you, coolest part was the next day she was playing Smashnova and she pointed to me in the first row, she remembered me. She did very well that week and it turned out to be the greatest sports event in my life and a wonderful feeling, I was riding pretty high for the rest of the year. Why did I get her the dog, after bothering her for an autograph for three days when she was working out I felt so bad, I just wanted her to know I was a fan and supported her very much, I did not even care about the autograph at that point, I just wanted to let her know how much I liked her and wanted her to feel great about being Anna Kournikova. I did hand her a note in it was something about her real fans never forgetting her no matter what happens and that I thought she was the best tennis player in the world, something like that, it was 2 years ago and I am getting older but it was near that. Anna had her best tournament that week in 2002, just in case you fans don't think you matter, let me tell you, fans do matter, if you cheer and try to pump up your tennis player out there they will respond trust me they need your support. SO CHEER FOR THEM. :wavey:
