I don't think they would, because how could you really love somebody if you are busy sleeping with/seeing another person... and they are doing the same to you? That's not love, that's just a fall back plan so you don't have to worry about being totally alone.

i think it can.

but both partners have to be very secure, mature, and confident in their love.

I agree with decemberlove, it depends on the people. There are certain couples who care about each other but still like to see other people. And they are able to make it work this way.

I think for the majority however, an open relationship wouldn't work cause people in general have a tendancy to get jealous about stuff their partners do.
