The 58th Tour of Spain started last Saturday in Gijon. The scenario of the first 10 days say a lot about this year's race. It started with a team time trial, not surprisingly won by ONCE, followed by 4 days of relatively flat tracks (stages were won by Petacchi (2), Perez and Etxebarria). Tomorrow there's a 53km time trial before heading to the Pyrenees for 3 days, where riders like Heras, Sevilla and Mancebo will have to get ahead of the rest, considering the great number of time trial kms that will be waiting for them the next 2 weeks. All of them will have to get through 2 days in the Sierra Nevada and survive a climb-time-trial on the last but one day.

So who will win this one? Aitor Gonzalez (2002 winner but so far this year nowhere near his best form), Oscar Sevilla (who lost last year's edition by a whisker), Angel Casero (2001 winner but already at a respectable distance), Roberto Heras (after his win in 2000 and his move to the Us Postal team he's never lived up to his favourite status), Igor Gonzalez de Galdeano (it's time for him to make a big step forwards and finally win a 3 week race, he has a wonderful ONCE team to support him) or will one of the outsiders run away with the trophy in Madrid? Don't forget Dario Frigo and Levi Leipheimer.

As far as the sprints go, there's only one man to take into account: Alessandro Petacchi. But the peloton heads for the mountains on Friday and the question is: will he go through all the suffering knowing he's already got what he came here for? At this point he's the only man in cycling history who's won at least 2 stages in all 3 big races in one year. I think the flat stages in the last 2 weeks could be ideal for Zabel, Lombardi, Svorada or Dean.

Enjoy! ;)

Wouldn't rule Isidro Nazol out to be good in the mountains too, he needs an off day or he might be one of the contenders to win the Vuelta.

I was happy that González won last year, however his behaviour was morally wrong, not only he didn't work for the head of the team (Sevilla was) but he managed to f*ck it up and even attack him

Last year there were three major competitors until the last day TT, Heras, González and Sevilla.

I think everyone here wants Sevilla to win this one, but he had a fall last monday and was thinking about going home

i hope isidro can keep it up but it'll be very hard for him..when he was ahead last monday he wasnt able to follow the rest of the breakaway on a 1st cat. climb. today is much worse and we dont know if he's recovered from yesterday.

i think someone like mercado will win today and igor will take some time back.

isidro had to let them go in the last km of the climb, so he was able to catch up after a bit, but he diffinitely had to let go, so today will be tough with 3 major climbs. hopefully for him the yellow jersey will help him survive.

Beltrán has already said to Spanish Media he's there just to help his leader IE Heras..... but what will his heart think??? he does better in cronos and is really good in mountains.....
I really wish Johan gave him Wild Card to act as he wants, but I doubt it, Heras must be given a reward for being Lance's shadow even if Manuel is fitter :(

beltran has always been a helper and he's never proven to be anything more than that. heras on the other hand has already won the vuelta so it's normal johan still sees him as their biggest weapon. i also think beltran will have an off day at some point.

i wonder what will happen today, it should be a very exciting race and im interested about dario frigo, he'll only get better from now on i suppose..

I think Beltrán made it into the top 10 in La Vuelta when he was with Banesto, but I'm not too sure...
As I don't think any ONCE rider would be a big challenger for the USP, he will do it well and there might be some moments of doubt for Bruynell (sp?)

none of the favourites is head and shoulders above the rest. aitor tried to attack today, but only managed to lose igor and beltran. heras tried aswell but i think he simply wasnt good enough, he even lost some time in the end. these 3 days have been a big test for isidro and he passed with flying colours. from now on he'll be the nb 1 leader in the once team and the biggest favourite to win. if there is a threat it'll come from aitor.

Heras needs something like The Angliru to win the Tour of Spain. He's at his best when it's steep. Hopefully the Angliru will be back next year. Well Done Nozal, you deserve it though he's a very good team.
Then I'll pray for a Valverde victory

heras had the angliru to win the tour last year, but he wasnt able to make a sufficient dent there. if they had done the climb this year, he might have taken around 2 minutes on nozal, but he'd still have a 1 minute deficit in the overall ranking, enough for nozal to still run away with victory in the end, even with the upcoming climb-time-trial.
since his move to us postal, roberto is basically over the hill, he lacks that extra bit that took him all the way to madrid in his kelme years. it's sad to see a rider with his qualities totally sacrifice himself for a teammate in july and eliminating his own chances to win the vuelta in the process.

He chose money instead of winning, he was promised to be US postal leader in Vuelta, however I'm sure he understood his possibilities would be really small since he and the rest of the team had to burn themselves for Armstrong first... but he might have thought he's good enough to win Vuelta on his own.... big mistake, now pay for it

I really can't understand to people who is in charge of Vuelta, a crono that's only 11 kms??? well even if it's on mountain that's nothing.... so no many time is expected to be lost ...
Does everyone know about ONCE team boss?? apparently he's been "fired" from la Vuelta....

They show the images, because on the motorcycle there's a camera from public TV and he was a real asshole, I never liked him (I'm sooo possitive, I don't like Heras, and so many more  ) but now the feeling is bigger

He had 1:55, lost 2:23...

Also Valverde surpassed Igor, so the 1º 2º 3º is Heras, Nozal, Valverde.

Belocki was missed in this years Vuelta. Doubt Heras would have beaten him. Though was a great Vuelta it went to the wire. Why didn't Mayo participate? Really enjoyed this years Vuelta

I think Beloki might have lost la Vuelta, as he was only ready for Le Tour, but who knows.

Mayo, Zubeldia, and some others riders were never going to be in La Vuelta, and performing well on Le Tour didn't not change the situation.
Perhaps, next year, we'll have a better Vuelta.

I hate Heras winning, but oh well at least Valverde got podium that makes me happy enough... Nozal was really empty of forces, his last km was a nightmare to see... I feel deeply sorry since he's been the best in the three weeks :(
Heras celebrate it today and tomorrow because after that your boss Armstrong wants you to be ready to work for him
