Larouche gets past Raymond in 3!

Bali, Indonesia(AP) - Canada's Marie-╚ve Larouche reached the quarterfinals in the Wismilak Junior International. Larouche, a native of Montreal, defeated young up-and-commer American Lindsay Raymond. The 15 year old Canadian looked out of sorts in the first set.

''She was serving and volleying all the time on both first and second serve and I wasn't prepared for that. It's pretty rare these days that someone, especially at that age, serves and volley, commented Larouche.

In the second and third set, the 4th ranked junior player seemed to have found a key to break Raymond's confidence.

''I started to chip the returns instead of hitting it hard. I basicly went for a two-step pass. The first shot was to prepare the real passing shot. By chiping the returns low, she had to volley up and that made it easier for me. After that, she lost her confidence and started staying back and I'm better then her from there, told Larouche to reporters after the 1h23 match.

In other first round action, third-seeded Syria Gonzalez of Spain advanced with a 1-6, 6-2, 7-6(1) win over Tatjana Vukasinovic. Also advancing was Mirjana Huubere who dispatched of doubles partner Fabiola Perez-Carmano of Bolivia. The only upset of the day came when Jacquelyn Whitten rolled by second seed Swede Nina Stryc÷vsson 7-5, 6-3.

Tomorrow, the Thai crowd will get to see world's junior number 1 and two-time junior US Open champion Dorissya Morkovina who opens her Wismilak campain against Kaia Jovovic. Doubles also starts tomorrow.

Jacquelyn Whitten hits a forehand against No. 2 seed Nina Strycovsson.

Jacquelyn Whitten stunned everyone today as she upset second seeded Nina Strycovsson in straight sets. "I'm really quite surprised that I was able to put together such a solid match. My season has been so up and down. I have consistently won a match and sometimes two at each tournament, but rarely make a run. I've proven though, today and at the French (where she upset Eva Sorrenta) that I'm capable of coming up with some big wins. I just need to learn how to put them together."

When asked if she thinks her run will continue at this tournament, she responded, "Yadira has been playing poorly but had a great in in the first round. I really don't expect to beat her, but I'll definitely give it all I have. I feel if I am going to win it probably has to be in straight sets. She's tough in the third."

Jacquelyn Whitten plays her first round doubles match with Tatjana Vukasinovic tomorrow. "I love Tatjana. I'm so glad she's started touring with me and really hope it continues for some time. She's a great partner and has the inside hookups on the 420."

Marie-╚ve Larouche on to the semifinals

Bali, Indonesia(AP) - Canada's Marie-╚ve Larouche continued her journey in the Wismilak Junior International. In the quarterfinals, she defeated Hanne Nielsen in straight sets. Larouche needed a lot of spirit to get through the match.

''The match was very tough. She played really, really well. I played well but my serve could have been better. I think I served at least 15 doubles faults. But when you are ranked high, players wants to beat you to show the world what they can do. I had to fight a lot since she was up 4-1 in both sets'', said Larouche to one of our reporter.

In other quarterfinal action, top seed Dorissya Morkovina dominated from start to finish, defeating Kaia Jovovic 7-5, 6-1. Mirjana Huubere continued her great run here beating fourth-seeded Syria Gonzalez while Jacquelyn Whitten rallied to beat Yadira Mendivil 7-6(8), 6-1.

In tomorrow's semifinals, Morkovina faces Huubere and Larouche will play Whitten.
