Morkovina wins despite ankle injury

http://marias.barbara-schett.net/usopen0311.jpg

Dorissya Morkovina: I played solid in the first and third set today. I was going for the lines and I hit them. But I still don't know what the hell happened in the second set. I just wasn't there.

At the beginning of the third set, I rolled my right ankle pretty badly so I called for the trainer and I got a taping. I was hurting throughout the final set but it made me a better player because I had to concentrate on hitting a winner on the first or second shot to keep to points short.

I'll play against Paterson in the final round of qualies and I don't know a lot about her games and strategies since she doesn't seem to support the junior tour. I also thought she had retired. I believed that you had to play junior to play some pro events but it doesn't look that way. What can I do.., said Morkovina after her 7-6(5), 1-6, 6-1 win.

Pre-Open Interview with Anjelica de la Courtiere

Q. Welcome to New York, Anjelica.
DLC: Oh, thank you.

Q. Tell us how important it is for you to do well here, considering your play since the French Open.
DLC: Well, every event if important, but this is a grand slam, so of course it matters a lot to me. I've been in the semifinals here before, and I know that I can play well here. My success level since the French has not been where I wanted it to be, I've been struggling a lot, but I'm still working hard and hopefully I can put together some wins and make a run here. Besides the French, this is certainly the most important event of the year to me.

Q. Some have criticized you, saying that you've been alouf and lackadasical since you won the tournament that was your goal to win. They say you haven't really been putting much effort into your matches.
DLC: Well, I think that's nonsense. I try very hard every time I step out on the court with no exceptions. I don't really know what to say to that... I've had some letdowns but I train hard and play hard.

Q. Your relationship with Eva Sorrenta has been publicized as continuing to deteriorate, yet you still play doubles together. Do you talk much anymore? Do you have plans to continue your professional relationship?
DLC: I don't talk to Eva outside of the tennis courts at all anymore. I don't think I'm her favorite person in the world right now, and I understand that and want to give her her space. As far as our partnership is concerned, we don't really work all that well as a team anymore... but that has been happening ever since we lost the Australian Open final this year. I just don't know, right now I think that this year may be our last together.

Q. You've mentioned that you'd like to start a family with your husband, Juan Carlos Ferrero. Is there a possibility that this is your last year on tour?
DLC: I'm not really ready to answer that right now. I do want a family but now isn't a good time. If I leave the tour it's because I feel like it isn't as important to me anymore, or that there is something else I would rather do. I don't know if I will play after this year, but who really knows? Anyone on tour could wake up tomorrow and know that this is their last day, or week, or year. It's just hard to say when you're ready to hang up your racquet.

Q. Thanks and good luck, Anjelica.
DLC: Thanks.

ZERENE FERNANDEZ/Marie-Eve Larouche 7-5 4-6 7-6(4)

Interview with Zerene Fernandez

Q. Congratulations on your win, you played a tough match today.
ZF: It was a good match for me, I think I fought very well until the end and managed to win. It was good.

Q. You've made a lot of fuss about the fact you were forced into the qualifying draw for entering late, is that still on your mind?
ZF: Yes, I want to win more than ever to prove that I belong in the main draw, as I should have been. It is silly that I was left out when everyone has historically been put in the draws of slams. I've been shafted a lot in my career and I'm really not happy about it. Also, the time allowed for commitments is so short that lots of people miss it. It's just really silly and the rules need to be changed.

Q. Looking ahead, so you feel that you will qualify for the main draw, and if so, how do you think you will perform there?
ZF: I've worked very hard in the last weeks to be ready for this tournament. I do think I will qualify. The main draw, I don't know. I still don't have a lot of experience in the tour matches. Hopefully I can adjust well and win a match in the main draw, but there are a lot of talented girls and it's a big thing to advance in the slams.

Q. Thank you, Zerene.
ZF: Of course.

Regla Torres has arrived in New York and said she's ready to go. The Spanish player has been out of form lately but said, I'm confident about this tournament, although I have to play a qualifier first round. I don't like playing qualifiers, she said.

Dorissya Morkovina: I was so close to losing in all three sets. I made so many errors, I think the stats guy probably lost track of it! But hey, a win is a win. I'm very happy to be in the maindraw and my first round opponent has been struggling this year so I have a good shot., said the 14 year old Minsk native following her 7-6(12)' 6-7(0), 7-6(0) win that lasted 3h19.

SOPHIE GAMBILL OUT

(10)Catriella Daniilidou def.Sophie Gambill 2-6 6-4 6-4

Sophie Gambill failed in her bid to reach the maindraw of the pro FWTT US open.Gambill lost in the final round of qualifying.
Gambill dominated the first set breaking her opponents serve twice and hit many winners and few UF errors.

'I played a great first set thats the kind of tennis i want to play all the time. But i'm going to have to work hard to play at that level all the time'

In the second and third sets both player broke each other at ease but Daniilidou was able to hold serve at the important times.

'She played better in the second and third sets and she started frustarting me,at times she was overpowering me so many i need to look at bulking my shots a little.I feel sad to loose but i still have the junior tournament to go so i'll work hard at my serve for the next few days before the tournament starts.'

Gambill came into the US open having just won the British Junior Championships. As the #1 seed Gambill won without dropping a set.

'It was great to win the nationals i needed some confidence after so many losses.I had a tough first round where i won 7-6 7-6 but after that i cruised no one there troubled me'

Interview with Zerene Fernandez

Q. You're in the main draw now, do you feel that you've proven your point?
ZF: Yes, I do. I think I deserved to be in the main draw from the beginning. It's nice to prove it, but it would have been better to be in there to begin with. I had some long tough matches and there's a possibility I could be tired for my main draw matches. I'll need all my strength against Regla.

Q. How tough was your match today?
ZF: It was long, I think that's about it. I had a mental hiccup in the second set, but got it back together in time. There were a lot of long rallies, but I attacked the net a lot and felt like I was in control of most of the points.

Q. That's an interesting point, you're one of the few claycourters on the tour that does a lot of serve and volleying. Is there a reason for that?
ZF: Well, my coach, Angelica Gavaldon, just thought that I should have more variety in my game. She worked with me from when I was 14, and she helped me develop the style. My best event ever was on grass, so I don't really consider myself a claycourter, but I definitely do prefer clay courts.

Q. What are your thoughts on your upcoming match with Regla Torres?
ZF: I know Regla pretty well, we've hit together before... I don't think we every played a match on tour, though. In any case, I think that she's very talented but certainly has weaknesses that can be exploited. She's more comfortable on the clay and has really been underperforming this year. She hasn't really made much noise since the beginning of the year. I think that if I come out and play consistantly, attacking when the time is right, I could come away with the upset.

Q. Thanks, Zerene.
ZF: No problem.

ANJELICA DE LA COURTIERE/Nika Beckham 7-5 6-4

Interview with Anjelica de la Courtiere

Q. Pretty tight match out there today.
DLC: Well, with all the upsets and long matches, I'd consider myself lucky. I was never really in a lot of trouble. I dictated the points well and stayed in command for the entire match. I'm proud of how I played today. Nika came out firing, and played a great match. Good for her on her home court.

Q. Next you face Marta Bajul, who scored one of many upsets today. What do you know about her?
DLC: Is she a junior? I don't really know anything about her. I don't think I've ever played her, seen her, or even heard of her. She must have played a decent match to upset Majlana, who has given me fits before. I'll just have to ask around... talk to some of the juniors, if she is a junior. I'm sure Zerene could give me some tips.

Q. In doubles, you and Eva have a pretty tough draw. Do you think you could fare well here?
DLC: Of course we could, we're still both good players... good doubles players. We haven't been working as well together as we did last year, but there's always a chance, you know. We could do well, it would be nice to win here having made the finals the last two years.

Q. Mixed doubles with your husband?
DLC: Yep, we didn't do well at Wimbledon, but neither of us really likes the grass. I'm hoping that we can win a few matches here, but it's not really that important. We're just playing for the fun of it.

Q. Thanks, Anjelica.
DLC: Thank you.

ZF: It was a tough match to play. I felt I had great chances to win, but Regla just stepped it up in the end. I still feel good having taken a top player to the limits. I feel good about how I played.

Q. You still have the doubles with Elke Vandecaetsbeek. You were partners in the juniors but she's since joined the pro tour. Are you two out of practice?
ZF: No, not really. We make a good team, neither of us being very good in doubles. We just played doubles together a few weeks ago in Mexico, so we had a chance to practice together. She had a nice win in the singles today, so I'm sure that she's very pleased with that. We just go out there to have fun, it's a good time for us just to play. I think that we could do some damage here, I've been in the quarterfinals before with Ana-Maria [Herrera], so I know how to do it. Just, you know, play your best.

Q. This is your last mixed doubles event with Hugo Armando?
ZF: Yes it is. Next week I'm getting married to Rafael [Nadal], and we'll be playing mixed together from then on. I've had a lot of fun playing with Hugo, and I'm sure we'll remain good friends. Hopefully we can do well in our last tournament together.

Q. Thanks, Zerene.
ZF: Thank you very much.

Nadia returns a serve against Bryanne

Fourty seventh ranked Belarussian Nadia Banaszek moved through to the second round of the US Open today with an upset win over twenty fourth seeded American Bryanne Applegate.
''Well what can I say.....I never really expected to win this match. Bryanne has been playing some good tennis of late and all I was hoping for was a respectable scoreline. My confidence has definitly taken a battering since Wimbledon, many consecutive loses and barely any wins in a few challenger events has affected me. But this win has really re-motivated me.'' Nadia said after the 7-5 3-6 7-5 win.

Next up for Banaszek will be twelth seeded German Selima Valentine who defeated Jennifer Selles 7-6(4) 6-3.
''This is going to be another very tough match. Selima looked very good out there today, and I'm going to have my work cut out for me. But the win over Bryanne has given me so much more confidence in my game, and I hope I will be able to show what I can do tomorrow.''

Nadia is also involved in the doubles event, partnering good friend Rachel-Anne Fleischmann of Germany. They open their campaign against Mia-Ling Keller and Daniela Turundzhov.

Masterton digs deep and comes out on top

Scottish #1 Paula Masterton was forced to bring out all of her talent and nerve to close out a 3-6 6-4 7-6(4) win over Anne-Laure Vandelion. After dropping the first set 6-3, the 24 year-old found her way back into the net with some nice wide serves, pushing her young opponent way out of court before slotting home easy volleys into the open space. Serving for the set at 5-2, Masterton began to slap at her forehand, and sailed 3 long to allow Vandelion back into the match.

After smashing a racket and branding herself a "psycho", Masterton regained ehr composure, and served out at 5-4.

The third set was extremelty tense, but the tennis produce was exquisite from both sides of the net. Vandelion battled hard, and opened up a small lead before the experience Scot found her range and punished some ill advised dropshots and moves to the net. The Scot broke at 5-5 and looked to be on her way through when leading 30-0, but a double fault and some fine scots from her opponent saw the match to a tie-break.

Masterton opened up a strong 4 point lead early on, but this was soon clsoed back to 5-3. Paula gained a matchpoint after a long rally, only to dump a forehand into the net. At 6-4, it was Vandelion's time to make the error, and as a backhand sailed long, Paula screamed in delight after coming through a very tough match.

"She's an amazing player, I knew it was going to be tough becuase she's had some good wins over top players. After I lost the first set I told myself to keep focused, but then let her back into it. The third set was just brilliant tennis, the crowd were really enjoying it which helped. Obviously a final set tie-break is a lottery. Leads can evaportae really quickly, but I think my experience helped. I'm so pleased ot get through."

After the only other Scot, Linzi Paterson, lost a heartbreaking 7-6(12) 6-7(0) 7-6(0) encounter in the last roudn of qualies, the Tartan Army are left wiht just one girl to support. "Linzi was really upset, beacuse she played so well and gave it her all. I think the match went on for 4 hours, and thats tough on anyone, let alone a 16 year old. But she's got the doubles events, as have I, and I'm really excited about them."

Indeed, Paula's change of attitude is obvious, back with Tiffany Eggert, the 6th seeds face a tough pairing in the opening round, but Paula isn't worried. We just ahve so much fun together, obviously we want to win, but we don't get down on ourselves. Tiff lost in the singles today in 3 breakers, so I know she will want to do well."

Indeed, in an Open where 13 seeds fell at the first hurdle. Masterton fins herself in teh only section which has kept all 4 seeds. Up next is Monica Gambill, the two have played frequently in the lead up to this event, with Gambill winning each time. Howerver, this feisty Scot will be looking to redress the balance.

Katarina Krivencheva-Molik def. (17)Lucia Kurkova 7-6(2), 2-6, 6-3

"I am so thrilled to have won this match. I knew coming into the tournament that this would be a very difficult matchup but I knew I had to prove to myself and others that I can compete well in the grandslams, as I have gone winless so far this year in the past 3 slams, even losing to eva in 3 tiebreaks at wimbledon. To have beaten Lucia is great, she has had great results this season, and its nice to get another top 20 win under my belt. I had 2R points to defend, so I'm glad I was able to do that, as my ranking really fell in the pros by not defending my 2R AO points. I hope to advance further in the tournament and to do well in the next round. I face Anna Kroulikova, who again is a feisty player. I know it will be tough but as always I will give it my all. I am so happy to have a grand slam victory again, I have really worked hard this season and have had my ups and downs so its nice to get a boost of confidence again. The first set vs. lucia was crucial to my win, as after trailing 5-4 and 6-5, I was able to pull myself together and win the tiebreak fairly easily. Lucia really dominated the play in the second set to even the match up. However, I kept being aggressive and was able to win the third set quite modestly, which I was quite surprised. I would like to thank Lucia for a great match. I hope to do well in doubles with Natalya. Thanks!"

(6)Gianna-Adrianna Dulko def. Larissa Liashenko 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-0

" I am so relieved and proud of myself for winning today. Larissa is not only my former doubles partners, which makes the match even tougher to play, but also a great player and former top 10 player. She really came out great, completely dominating the first set. But once I had really adjusted to the atmosphere and her game, I was able to pull out the second set and just control the match from there. The third set despite the score did have its moments, but I hung in tough and was able to pull out every game. I was very pleased with my play after the first set. Larissa had chances in the second to come close to winning the match but I just stayed focused and luckily was able to pull out the very close tiebreaker. This win is great for me as I am at a high with my ranking and seeding right now and really wanted to do well in this tournament. I am so glad to have reached the 2R. I knew that beating Larissa would be a testament to my play. I would just like to say although I still am angry for what she did to me with our doubles partnership, I have moved on and no longer have bitter feelings towards Larissa. I explained this to her after our match. Now that the bottom part of the draw is wide open with the string of upsets, I hope to reach far in this tournament. I hope to do well in doubles and mixed as well, Im hoping for a strong showing and believe one will happen. Thanks."

[size=1]Gisele Noventz argue against a serve called ace against Dorissya Morkovina, during the first round of US Open, in Flushing Meadows, New York.

Interview with Gisele Noventz
Dorissya Morkovina def. Gisele Noventz 7-6 6-7 7-6

Q: Wow, that was a marathon.
A: Oh Lord..

Q: Sorry, but what goes thru your head when you're leading the match?
A: I wanna have sex.

Q: What?
A: That what goes thru my head when I'm leading. I wanna finish my match quickly then I can have some sex.

Q: That's unusual.
A: That's me.

Q: What do you think of Morkovina?
A: I don't think she's that good. She didn't do nothing. I just played stupid.

Q: Don't you think she's a talented player?
A: No, just another Russian, or whatever her country is, trying to be someone.

Q: You think you're a better player than her?
A: Of course. What a dumb question. I've done a lot in my career, I'm not playing for the first time today, so I obviously think I'm hell better than her. Who does she think she is? She's nothing compared with Gisele Noventz.

Q: You complained a lot today, do you think they were givin her an advantage?
A: Yes, because she's a blond chick girl and I'm a black girl. The world is racist, and US Open too.

Q: Why so many sudden racism accusations?
A: Because that's what happening. I was tired of keeping them with me and my family, I've decided to open my mouth and show everyone what's really happening on the tour. There's everything, people against lesbians, against asians, and against black people too. That's the way it is.

Q: Do you think you've been cheated because you're black?
A: Obviously. The umpire was white, and the others were too, so they didn't want to see a black girl winning.

Q: You're changing by your own will or somebody's forcing you to?
A: Of course by my own will. I was never that girl who takes anything and say nothing. I'm not that. I'm always saying something, and I don't care if you like it or not. I was afraid of being myself, so I kept a little of my feelings inside me, but I'm tired of hypocrisy. I'm not shutting my mouth anymore.

Q: That's great Gisele. We can trust you now.
A: Don't get used to it.

Q: So how's everything between you and Anna?
A: Everything's fine. I still think we're the best team, and if everything goes fine, we're gonna win this shit. Nothing can stop us.

Q: Ok Gisele, thank you for your time, and we hope you comeback next year.
A: Yeah yeah bye.

Dorissya Morkovina: What a tough match. Not because she played well but because I couldn't run. My ankle hurts pretty badly. She is such a moron on and off the court it's amazing. All I can say is that she just got her ass kicked by a 14 year old. Maybe if she would get in shape, she would be better. She is huge, she has a pretty big butt and she can't run. I'm in the next round and not her. Hahaha!, said Morkovina following her 7-6(9), 6-7(2), 7-6(5) win over seeded Gisele Noventz.

Kolbovic Beats The Odds, and Huubere!

In a stunning display of crafty, artistic tennis, Qualifier Amanda Kolbovic defeated the Worlds #2 player Marteena Huubere! Kolbovic played aggressive tennsi in the first set, dictating tha rallies before carving up a dropshot or slapping a forehand winner past Huubere.

Kolbovic's spectacular tennis won her the first set 6-3, but in the second she looked bored, not even trying to chase down easily retrievable shots. Almost as if she was giving away the set, Kolbovic lost 6-0. Huubere looked pumped and ready to steamroll through the third, but Amanda decided to try, and once again took control of the rallies with sharp angled shots or moonballs that had the cow Huubere huffing and puffing. Kolbovic raced out to a 5-0 lead, before pitying Marteena and donating 4 games before closing out the match with a short arcing lob that was just out of the reach of Huubere's stubby arms.

"I felt great out there. I didn't have a photo shoot afterwards, so I decided to let her win the second set, make her and the crowd think she was actually in the match *laughs*"

"I'm not sure how far I'll go in this event, I haven't quite decided yet. Depending on where I need to be or what celebrity wants to meet me, it's all up in the air right now. I'll just play long enough to get my ranking higher."

Thanks everyone. :wavey: Huubere, this is all just in fun, and it's sticking in character with my player. ;)

First, shut up! Second, she's done the racist remarks before me

And the 14 year old thing was in the spirit of the game saying that she must suck a lot before in real life, no 14 year old would beat a 22nd seeded player.

You need to mind your own little business. I think you have enough things to worry about yourself without going into other people's..

Regla Torres: "I can beat Anjelica"

Flushing Meadows, New York (AP)

After defeating African suprise packet Caroline Mutola 2-6 6-3 7-6, Regla Torres admitted that she is pumped for her next round match against Anjelica de la Courtiere, the French Open champion. "We've played a few times this year, and she's been winning them all, but I know I can beat her. I have beat her before and I will again." Torres who decided to give up tennis during the crucial claycourt season earlier this year is now ranked just inside the top 20. Since her comeback, her form hasn't reached the level she did before she left which included a tier I win in Charleston with a win over #1 Larisa Ferrer. However, Torres said, "I think I'm beginning to take my game seriously again. This is the first grand slam I've played since the Australian Open and I had to retire with an injury there, so I wasn't too happy. This hasn't been a very good year for me in the slams, and I want to change it right here." This could only mean bad news for her next opponent.

ANJELICA DE LA COURTIERE/Marta Bajul 6-4 3-6 7-6(1)

Interview with Anjelica de la Courtiere

Q. Tough match for you today, Marta's game seemed to frustrate you.
DLC: Yes, it did. She's a crafty player and got a lot of my shots back. She added spins and things. In the tiebreak I was just so frustrated that I pounded everything... I was lucky that they went in. She played well, I was lucky to get through this match.

Q. Next up is Regla Torres. She seems to think that you don't stand a chance in the match against her. What are your thoughts?
DLC: Yes, I heard what she said. I don't know, I think she's just trying to pump herself up for the match. She hasn't done well this year, or well against me this year, so I think that she just wants to encourage herself. Our levels of play seem to be on par with each other. I was there for her match against Zerene [Fernandez] and I saw how Zerene's net play got to Regla. I don't know, it should be a good match. I'd really like to get through it and do well here at the open. It would mean a lot to me since I haven't had much success lately.

Q. Eva Sorrenta went down today to Tami Sugarn, she doesn't seem to be very focused lately. Do you think she will stay in the doubles event?
DLC: Oh of course, she's never been one to back out of anything. I'm not really sure what's been happening with her lately. I think she just has a lot on her mind and her game just isn't there. I watched a bit of the match and Tami was really playing well. I think Tami is fired up to do well here at the Open. It was a good win for her.

Q. Thanks Anjelica.
DLC: Thank you.

I think you didn't get it..

WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU?

I don't fucking care if you're 15 or 16 years old, you're a nobody! And I'm a player with a decent career. I lost for a shitty player! So what? I still have everything I've accomplish before, and I've won a lot of things. While you're trying to survive at qualifyings and at the JR's . And Anjelica can really express and say whateva she wants to. I allow her to, and you have to shut up, because your journey is over. U lost hahahaha! And more! U will be a nobody! Exactly. You'll have to live thru the juniors competition. I bet you'd die to have my career .But you won't. oh that's so bad :haha:

Ah, and an example of Racism  what a great example you're showing to the other girls on the tour... here's what she said..

It's because of girls like you who'll make me always accuse ppl of racism. Thanks Dorissya for showing what you really are :) Now people will think twice before approaching a monster like you. A young girl, thinking so badly..

I bet if I had started with Dorissya in the pros instead of Larissa, cuz I had success with her, my career would have been better then yours! Top10 in both singles and doubles. 5 career singles titles, 3 singles ITF titles, 1 Grand Slam doubles title, 1 other doubles title.

I'm sorry but you started this shit with your first interview. And if saying ''I kicked your huge black ass'' makes me racist then so be it, cuz I could have said ''I kicked your little white ass''. Would that have been racist? Hell no.. Just because it isn't directed towards you, eh Queen Gisele.

The only reason Dorissya hasn't achieved as much as you in the pros is that she can't play more then 4(+wc's) tournaments a year when you can play 30!

And Anjelica can not say what the hell she wants when it comes to other people business because she's the first one saying other to shut up when there talking about her..

The only people that others don't look up to is you...

I have never said that I kicked your white ass, and I never said anything bad on my interview. Just said that they were helping you on the line calls, and they happened to be white person, so they obviously helped you.

And who gives a fuck if you're a junior and can't play more than 4 tournaments in a year? That's your problem. I can, and according to my] results I'm better than you, so the discussion ends up here. And Anjelica, if you wanna say something, please be free to speak out! :)

And people I suggest you to avoid Morkovina and probably Liashenko too, cuz they probably think the same way about ppl from the other races. Thanks.

FLL
Aug 31st, 2003, 04:02 PM
I never said you said ''I kicked you little white ass'', I said if I would have told another person, ''I kicked your little white ass'', it wouldn't have been a racist comment. But since it was directed to you, it is? Why? And isn't your ass black? What's racist in saying you have a black ass?

And I think I have more friends on tour then you so your little ''don't talk to them'' won't work..

Becool
Aug 31st, 2003, 04:15 PM
You used "black" as an insult, and that makes you a racist. I'm sure you don't use it only to me, but to other people too. I'm sorry for those who'll keep getting along with you, walking with human being who discriminates the others just because of their race, I'm sure you were taught about that, so you family must be a bunch of racist too, there's nothing I can do about it.

I'm just givin an idea of leaving this girl behind, cuz she's just full of herself. Just because she won 3 or 4 tournaments on juniors and a few rounds on pro tour, she thinks she's already a completed player.

We shared points yesterday

And Gisele and Dorissya, shut the hell up! You are acting like two childs. I hate seeing two of my friends talking trash and acting immature.

I don't think FLL used the adjective ''black'' in a bad manner. I met him and his girlfriend is asian so I don't think he is racist.

Please stop..

Masterton Comes Up Short

Edinburgh's Paula Masterton once again failed to overcome the challenge of England's Monica Gambill. The pair have met 3 times in 5 weeks, each time with Gambill coming out on top. Masterton started well, holiding serve and putting pressure on Gambill, who struggled under lights. The Scot seemed flustered after a dubious call went against her, and Gambill seized her chance to break and close out the first set 7-5.

Masterton let her head drop, and Gambill raced to a 4-0 lead in the second before the Scot found her form with now sweet volleys and tight angles. After a break point went begging at 3-4, Masterton smashed her racket in frustration, and won just 2 more points, one being a double fault from Gambill.

"To loose like this is disappointing. 7-5 6-3 is a case of missed oppertunities. It's been tehsame in all our matches. She just knows what to do to beat me. I've tried everything in my game but you always have one bogey player I guess, and she's mine. I've been playing well, and was looking to go well here, especially with alot of teh seeds going. But Monica was too good. I think she has a good chance to go far in the event, and hopefully break the top 10 soon."

''I'm playing so well right now. All my match were very long but I felt I could have run out there 2 more hours. I'm very fit and I finally see that all my offcourt training is paying off. I've played two huge hitters and I got them frustrated by keeping the ball in play with various spins and I'm so happy to show everyone that you don't need to hit hard to win.''

An Interview With Elizabeth Hawkins: Elizabeth Hawkins def. Giselle Novotnez 7-6; 7-5

Alot of people are shocked that you beat two seeds in a row. Are you surprised?: Well, yes and no. Honestly I think I am a better player than Hingisafrilla, and my results certianly point that way, and I beat Giselle the only time we've ever played, so in that sense I wasn't shocked, but then again I have never been past the second round of a major. I changed my strategy a little this week, and I didn't know how that would work out. Needless to say, I am pleasantly surprised.

Several leading tennis critics say that your singing career is distracting you from staying on court, and improving your tennis. What are your thoughts?: Haha. Yes I have the no. 1 album and the no. 1 single in the country, and I am very very proud of that. I think I can do both. I mean, I worked really really hard on that album, and I have done endless promotional work in every city I have visited on tour, and yet I spent a few hours each day with my coach working on my tactics, and trying to find the right balance of aggression and consistency. In weeks past I think I have been too aggressive, and I have lost too many matches because of errors. So hopefully I will shut them up with my performance this week:) .

So far, you have been predicted to lose every single match. Does this bother you?: yes a little. I mean, I don't think many so called experts or even my fellow tour players pay me much attention, even though I have already won a title and reached the quarter-finals of a tier one, and scored several top ten wins (including one over Marteena Huubere in Miami). But you know, it just gives me that much more motivation to win and beat my opponent.

Next you face Selima Valentine. Any thoughs?: You know, there is nothing I need to proove to myself this week. Obvoiusly I would love to win, but I am happy at this point gaining ranking points and just working my way up the ladder. It isn't like I can make any major adjustments to my game, nor can she, so whoever did their homework best will win. I hope it's me, but it isn't like I'll be devastated if I lose.

Finally, who do you think is the favorite to win the title?: If Larissa doesn't win here, I think it will be a major embarassment for her. She has worked so damn hard on the hardcourts this year, and just has so much confidence (aka those silly bonus points), that if she doesn't win, I think people will have to question her status as the world number one.

Well thanks Elizabeth for this Interview, and good luck in the third round!: I enjoyed giving it. I hope to be back in here soon.

Juliana Lapentti in the US Open quarterfinals

I'm happy and surprised at the same time. Since becomming a professional, I haven't had a lot of succes. I've had some good wins but no big results. This week, it's been both. I've defeated three great players reaching the quarterfinal. Larisa will be very difficult as she is the best player out there and very experienced. She is a good friend too because we won the Eastbourne title together. I'll try my best.

Let me see she won this year are Hyderabad (IV), Doha (III), Dubai (II), Key Biscayne (I) and Stanford (II).

I'll ask her for lotery numbers because she is lucky as hell to win all the time without ''studying'' the game...

de la Courtiere-Ferrero to switch to Spain, Torres
AP

NEW YORK -- Just minutes after losing her 3rd round singles match to Regla Torres 6-1 6-7 1-6, Anjelica de la Courtiere-Ferrero announced that due to issues with her doubles partner and the nation that she now represents, she will be playing for Spain in 2004.

Anjelica de la Courtiere became a Spanish citizen earlier this year when she wed Spanish tennis star Juan Carlos Ferrero. She has chosen to represent that nation following her well-reported conflicts with Australian Open champion Eva Sorrenta.

"I decided that it was best to move on. This decision has been a long time in the coming," stated de la Courtiere-Ferrero. "Spain will provide me with better funding, better facilities, less taxes, and just more personal security... emotional security. I love Canada and will always have a high reguard for the nation, but I have to go."

de la Courtiere was also offered lucrative deals with the Australian and Mexican tennis federations.

Following her announcement that she was moving to Spain, de la Courtiere made the next logical step in announcing that this year would be her last with partner Eva Sorrenta.

"Our relationship this year has deteriorated quickly, both on the court and off. We've had little success and basically little fun. I think that by changing doubles partners I will at least begin to see doubles as a joy and not the chore that it has lately become," commented de la Courtiere-Ferrero.

The 2003 French Open champion continued by stating that she has already secured a partnership for next year with Spain's Regla Torres.

"Regla is an amazing and fun player that I have come to respect and befriend in the past seasons on the tour. I know that our partnership will be both enjoyable and successful," added de la Courtiere-Ferrero.

Neither Eva Sorrenta nor Regla Torres could be reached for comment before this story went to press.

Errr i never said something about me lol... anyways when she wasn't my partner i was not jealous because she was winning it all.
And if she doesn't participate much maybe it can be because she doesn't have access to internet very often.

The best you can do is try to beat her instead of criticize, is difficult but not impossible ;)

Regla Torres downs future doubles partner to move into quarters

Flushing Meadows, New York

Regla Torres has beaten Anjelica de la Courtiere to move into only her third quarter-finals in a grand slam tournament with a come from behind 1-6 7-6 6-1 victory. She said, "It was all mental. Anjelica had me beat in the first two sets, and I really just had to believe in myself." Later de la Courtiere announced that she'd be representing Spain and that she and Regla intend to be doubles partners for 2004. Torres said, "I'm not suprised, of course not, she told me all about it before and it was a mutual decision and I'm very happy with I must say." When asked was it difficult to play and defeat a player whom you'll be partnering in doubles. "Well no, not really, we're all professionals here, and it's just a tennis match and it had to be played. I'm sure we'll be playing a lot of times again. I guess just a bit of bad timing." (laughs...) When asked about her next opponent Carmen Prado, "Well I've never played her. I know she's good and fast improving. I'm just glad this isn't on claycourts. All I can do is play my game. I know that I need a good start though, the first set is crucial for me. I've been coming back from 1 set down for 3 matches now, and I don't know how much longer I can do it. And she's younger." Torres is aiming to reach her 2nd US Open semi-final in 3 years. She last reached the Open semis in 2001 and lost to eventual champ Taliamonosoko.

Tired Torres moves into 2nd US Open semi

Flushing Meadows, New York

Having played four consecutive three set matches to move into the US Open semi-finals, Regla Torres admitted she was extremely tired. After a marathon quarter-final match lasting two and a half hours, the Spanish player prevailed 7-6 6-7 7-6. She said, "I was just playing from memory out there. I was just so tired physically and mentally." She collapsed after winning the match and left the court on a stretcher as she was too tired walk.

This cannot be good news for Torres as in her upcoming semi she faces world #1 Larisa Ferrer who hasn't dropped a set on her way. "She's had it a lot easier than me, for sure", said Torres, who may not have enough left in the tank for taking on the world #1. However she tried to remain positive by saying, "I still believe in myself and I'm going to go out and give my 100%. I beat her the last time we played in Charleston, anything can happen still."

Win or lose, a semi-final appearance in grand slam is a welcome back for Regla Torres who only a few weeks ago came back onto tour. She said, "I can't believe I'm in a grand semi again. It's exciting."

SORRENTA MOVES FORWARD IN DOUBLES COMPETITION

Q: Eva, we've heard very little from you the past few weeks. You lost early in Toronto and New Haven, went out in the second round here in the singles, and now the doubles controversy with Anjelica, yet no comments or interviews, why is that?

A: No specific reason, I have just not been interested in discussing anything at that point in time. I prefer to do things on my terms, if I lose and want to talk about it, then fine, some times it is best to take time away from the media frenzy though.

Q: You came into the singles event probably not feeling the best about your game, where do things stand for you leading into the fall events?

A: I don't feel I played bad, I ran into tough competition. Kurkova, Torres, and Sugarn, those are good players who are capable of doing well any given week and have proven themselves. I had some close matches but was unable to hang tough in the end but I don't think I really did anything too wrong. I felt decent anyway, I have felt much worse before and had good results, so I can't say I felt like I was in a real low slump or something.

Q: So you are feeling good heading into the indoor season?

A: I think I tend to play my best during that part of the year so we'll see how things go. I've had a lot of distractions this year so it hasn't always been easy but I'm trying my best to stay positive and not let the disappointments drag me down too much. It's unhealthy when you are constantly having so many major ups and major downs based on your tennis, and that is what happens to many players. One day they are on top of the world, the next they are extremely depressed and it's all over a match, so I think I have learned a lot about that with experience.

Q: Recently your partner de la Courtiere decided to terminate your partnership as a doubles team for next season, did this come as a surprise to you?

A: No, it didn't come as a surprise. She didn't mention it to me, but I know her character well so I was prepared for this possibility well ahead of time so it was hardly a bombshell.

Q: It must be awkward playing together at this point?

A: Yes, but it had been for some time. Quite frankly I didn't even want to look at her while we were playing together and we just didn't have any emotional connection on the court and you need to have that to go all the way and be at the top.

Q: Do you rule out your chances at the title here?

A: No, but if we do it will be a testament to our doubles skills purely, and nothing to do with a team desire to win this championship, that's all.

Q: What are your plans for doubles at this point?

A: I am just going to have fun now for the rest of the season, just team up with whoever for the next couple of months. I need a break away from the committment side of doubles that I have pretty much always had. So I am looking forward to just having fun with no expectations at this point, and then we'll see what happens for next season.

Q: Thanks Eva.

A: Thanks.

I am really sad right now and angry, that neither Xavier or Anna had the guts to tell me anything about their affair. However, I am now very happy with Andy, so I wish Anna and Xavier well in the future. I just hope that they both remain faithful to eachother."

Third US Open final for Larisa Ferrer

http://www.barbara-schett.net/usopen0316.jpg
Larisa Ferrer serving in her match against Regla Torres

Yesterday Larisa Ferrer qualified to her third career singles final in the US Open. Ferrer beat Spaniard Regla Torres in two sets, 6-1, 6-4.

"It was tougher than it looked, Regla was hitting great winners and it was tough to return her serve. She played great tennis and we both were very nervous in that match. I think that my experience of all this year on hardcourt is what made me win and I hope I can beat Amanda." Ferrer said in her press conference.

This is the third time Ferrer reaches the US Open final, but she has never won. In 2000 Selima Valentine won the Open, and in 2001 Ruflina Taliamanosoko beat her in a great final. She failed to reach the final last year when she lost again to Selima Valentine. Larisa is also in the doubles final with Lucia Kurkova and they play today against the surprise team of Emilie Joubert and Joanna Seles.

I am so excited that Larisa has made FWTT history. She deserves to be the first and maybe only player to accomplish such a feat. She will for sure be the first inductee to the FW tennis hall of fame.
