I'm serious. Maria changes her grunts every 2nd point (to a totally different kind of grunt) but is sometimes mute as well.

Very strange. Most other grunting players are very consistent with it. Is it just a big show ???

V and S are like this too. Bovina also. Seles is the only woman that I have heard consistently grunt on every shot.

Yep venus hardly ever grunts until she needs to- when she's being challanged- just to give her that bit more in edge...
Serena too- only grunts when she needs to and wants to asert her influnence over someone..
You know a williams is 100% committed to winning when they start grunting..

True - but WHEN they grunt they are consistent.

Maria, however ...

I'm watching her match against VRP and what I have decided is fake is...SHARAPOVA...she pumps her fucking fist after every point...she did it on the first point of the match...its just OBNOXIOUS...but besides that...she really is really aggressive and that bodes well for her future...

Yeah, I find the fist annoying too. And it looks fake. :p

It is a bit annoying, but I guess faking the grunts would just be wasting energy, so I don't think she does it on purpose.

Oh, a mute point again. You never know what you will get at the next point. ;)

And yeah, she plays well.

Maria is making an effort to control the grunting.

Aug 26th, 2003, 11:35 PM
What gg said. I mean, she grunted the same way every point at Wimby, then everyone made a big deal about it. I think now she is concious about it, and is trying to quiet it down.

Yes, the grunts/screams are fake. I have been told by a very reliable inside source that Maria wears a tiny but powerful loudspeaker device in her dress, which is controlled by her coach. The screams are a means of communicating with Maria and telling her when to be more aggressive.

Seems to be bitting her bottom lip when she doesn't grunt.

First, The grunts being fake part is so stupid it is ridiculous. Her agents are trying to get her to stop gruntin so bad. She is losing fans b/c of that grunt. If anyone says they don't like maria 9 out of 10 times it is b/c of the grunt. Next, the microphone in the dress part........ c'mon now lets use our heads. I would really like to know this reliable inside source that is giving you all this false info. ( Iam not attakcing you, Controllfreak, just your source ;) )

Good luck maria!!!!!

GD, I think Maria will tone down the grunting in time. Her grunting has gotten quieter since her noisy first round match at Wimbledon against Ashley Harkleroad. And pumping her fist at 6-1 5-1 is a little much. But fortunately she is friends with Anastasia Myskina who trains with Maria in Los Angeles. And she's friends with Elena Demeniteva, too. She respects those 2 Russian girls and they will be a good influence on Maria. And in time her grunting won't be so loud and her fist pumping won't be so prevalent. Especailly at 6-1 5-1. But atleast Maria shows intensity when she plays unlike alot of her compatriots. And it shows in their sometimes lackluster play.

Maria only tends to grunt near the end of sets or when it gets tense
at start of matches and sets she's quiet

its not Fake, its just release of added tension

in practise she never grunts

never seen Seles practice but anyone who has, what she like in practice ?

Well, my point was rather that she has about 100 different kinds of grunting.

Well Maria says she's been grunting since she was 4. So she's probably has mastered the art of grunting. ;)

And Monica Seles is the most consistent grunter I've ever heard.

I certainly understand if someone doesn't like it, but even if it's a bit of gamesmanship (which I don't think it is) how does it affect what goes on on the tennis court? I mean, she can't fake the way she hits a ball. Her opponent shouldn't let it distract them.

(Though I can only imagine how it will drive Jen crazy!!!)

Her grunts are extremely fake. I mean she grunts 5 seconds after she hits the ball!

misha
Aug 27th, 2003, 02:28 AM
It does affect the other player because it can be very important for them to hear the ball hit the racquet! It has an impact on their timing.

Knizzle
Aug 27th, 2003, 02:43 AM
Fake grunts would take away from her focus of hitting the ball so I doubt she is faking it. And faking the grunts isn't making her win. I really don't see how a grunt can distract an opponent. As for the fist pumping, it's not like she is looking at her opponent and rubbing it in, she is just happy she won the point. Some people in here have majors sticks up their arse.

Fair points, Knizzle! :D

Maria has let several junior and challenger matches slip away from her after building a big lead. She needs to learn to concentrate for the entire match. This is Masha's first U.S. open as a professional. So she's going to be extra pumped up. :bounce:

I think she's just too showy but that would just be because she's still young. She's in that being 'ostentatious' stage - 'attention, attention'.

The fist pumps were more annoying than the grunts IMO. I love her style of play though. Go Maria. Maybe she will avoid the Russian disease and win a major.

Lets just hope Maria and Jen meet in round 3-of course it will be thenight match!

She will Moby. Trust me. ;)

Rollo, if Sharapova and Capriati play in the third round their match will be televised by CBS in the daytime. Guaranteed. CBS makes the call and they will want to air that match.

It's an interesting thing- grunting. Years ago when the players and press first started getting on Monica Seles for grunting, the media and press neglected to give the rest of the story. Monica Seles was completely silent in practice, and to scream with two syllables during a match kind of looked like it was designed as a distraction- which it frequently was- Seles would grunt loudly when hitting a drop shot.

Players have been grunting forever, and I don't see how it really affects a match all that much. It takes a few games to get used to the noise, and then a good player should be able to adjust and settle into playing tennis regardless of the grunting.

Someone saw on TV about Maria Sharapova and it say some people who know her when she was in Moscow and they told that it's fake because she always mute when she was in Moscow. She never scream like that one before!

I remember reading articles and seeing clips of Maria years ago and the grunt was always mentioned/heard. If she's faking it, she's been faking it since before she even played junior tournaments.

I think the inconsistency of the grunts is more from trying to tone it down.

Monica does grunt in practice, at least sometimes.
It's ridiculous to suggest that Monica did that as gamesmanship -- anyone who knows anything about her character knows that's not true.
The idea that you need perfect quiet to hit the ball is a bit ridiculous -- where do you lot play tennis? In a church? Certainly at the US Open there's enough noise from the crowd, the traffic/planes, etc.. that a grunt wouldn't make a difference.

Now, now, let's not get our panties in a bunch. I have seen Monica practice many times, and no, she does not grunt with the 2 syllable grunt-and-scream that she uses in matches. In practice, she's about as loud as her currently running AmericanExpress commercial- not very. I don't think it has ever been gamesmanship from her. I think she was taught to do this by her father from when she started playing tennis. Probably gamesmanship from him, wouldn't you think? The fact that she made the attempt to suppress the grunt for the entire first set of the 1992 Wimbledon final is revealing. I don't expect silence in matches. Some people do, but certainly not me- I'm a loud grunting serve-and-volley player, so you're grunting up the wrong tree on this one.

P.S.- I like Monica Seles quite a bit, and always enjoy watching her practice when I can- it's an amazing site!

I'm glad you like Monica! Yes she does grunt less in practice than in matches -- but I understand. When I play, I grunt, (not as wonderfully as Monica, but of course I don't hit the ball anything like she does) I don't do it consciously, I guess it just helps me rachet up the intensity. I don't think it was gamesmanship on Karolyi's part. Look, lots of players grunt nowadays. Men grunt. Women grunt. Monica has a particular two-chord grunt! Maria's grunt is something else!
I'm not sure what you mean about the Wimbledon 92 final -- if it was gamesmanship, wouldn't she have tried it even more on a big occasion?
But I think there are many more annoying things an opponent can do on a tennis court than grunt!!

My point was Monica could turn off the grunt any time she wanted, and at the Wimbledon 92 Final- she did, so she obviously had complete control over whether or not she grunted in a match. I will never forget hearing one of her loudest grunts in the semis that year against Navratilova- and Monica was hitting a drop shot!!!

I actually learned how to play 2 hands on both sides as an off-shoot of my regular 1-handed game, as a result of watching Monica hit those angles with that much pace. I thought- this has got to be fun, and it is!

mishar
Aug 27th, 2003, 07:03 PM
Yeah, she could have had the same results in every match as she had at WC 92!!!

Obviously it was more of a conscious effort for her to turn off the grunt than to turn it on.
