Fashion Wire Daily NY August 24, 2003 - Tennis fashionistas Venus and Serena Williams (news - web sites) and Anna Kournikova (news - web sites) may be sitting out the U.S. Open (news - web sites) this week, but that doesn't mean there won't be any style on the courts in Queens.
Fila is suiting up Jennifer Capriati and Kim Clijsters for the tournament, each in an outfit created by design director Freya Tamayo specifically for her. And though neither will be sporting a spandex catsuit (à la Serena Williams' ensemble at last year's U.S. Open), both women are sure to turn heads in their flashy frocks.
Capriati's racer-back tank dress was made in France, but it's an all-American look. The navy dress is adorned with white stars and features an all-over gold shimmer. The 27-year-old athlete has even coordinated her navy and metallic gold accessories to complete the ensemble.
Clijster, currently the no. 1-ranked player in women's tennis, is taking the glitter factor even further with her 100% silver lame dress, also a racer-back tank, complemented by white and black accessories. Fila has also customized each player's footwear to match her ensemble.
Both women will wear their signature dresses during select matches over the course of the two-week tournament. The rest of the time they will sport Fila's US Open Collection of in-line apparel.
Fans will be able to purchase both dresses for themselves at Fila's on-site retail store at the event. Capriati's outfit will also be available, with very limited distribution, at Paragon in New York City. The suggested retail price is $90.
