the american Amber Liu. Too bad we cant see past the color boundary here in the US to cheer for the W/S. But instead they(commentators) applaud the for foreigner instead of rooting for their home person.

actually you have just given reason for the American's cheering for the Williams opponet, they always cheer the underdog and they are doing the same thing tonight. Even though she isn't white.

They don't cheer for the underdog when Capriati or Davenport play. I didn't hear any GO Callens from the Americans earlier.

Maybe it's this exact response that keeps the negativity going? Why let "them" know that it bothers you... perhaps they will do it more since you're obviously affected?

Just a thought.

LOL We have SOME Williams fans who claim that the SISTERS are THE MOST POPULAR players on the WTA tour and then the same fans whine about how little crowd support they enjoy even when they play in their OWN HOME COUNTRY where they are supposedly "very popular" . Its really funny

Bored now. Don't you have a new tune to sing or are you a broken record like everyone else in this thread?

I agree. They recently showed a replay of Venus' US Open semifinal win against Martina. Venus was booed off the court - how rude. :(

The williams sisters are the most popular player in the media and press, not in the crowd. Just because your popular doesn't necessarily mean that you are liked.

The sisters are liked by the people who count, not some of the trash that unfortuantely fumugates the tournaments they play.

That was 3 US Opens ago. Many New Yorkers didn't like Hingis at that time.

Why can't people cheer for whoever they like, even if that player may not be from their own country?

No, it can't. There seem to be some people who look for anything that they can claim is biased against the Williams Sisters (see my comments in the thread about Justine's use of the word "behind"). :p

I swear that one of these days, we're going to have a poster here bring a decibel meter to a tournament and complain because the sound level for player A was 78.34 decibels, while the sound level for Venus or Serena was only 78.33 decibels, and that this is proof of how the crowds hate the Williams Sisters.

I really was surprised the American crowd was generous enough to give Amber a considerably huge support considering that maybe they only root for white americans most of the time... but maybe it's all starting to get better, that the americans are more of less racist now.. not that i'm saying they are....

The crowd was very supportive of Asian-American Amber Liu.

She was the underdog.

Get over it, Fools. (you know who you are.)

GO U.S.A.!!!

Amber Liu is exciting to watch. I like her. I'm eager to see how far she'll go.

Venus and Serena are strong, mentally and physically(at least serena is), black women. They've achieved more than expected in a sport that is supposed to be lily white. Generally, white people cannot accept that. If there was a white player of Serena's strength that played and did everything like Serena, white america would love and cheer for her like they do for Lindsay and Jennifer. And, they will do so no matter how many tournaments she wins an how arrogant she is. People need to stop pretending that racism and SEXISM in tennis doesn't exist. Venus and Serena are two SUCCESSFUL black FEMALE players.

GoDominique, were you been sarcastic or did you mean when Venus played Amelie last year? I ask because I can't remember Venus being booed back in 2000.

Ted of Teds Tennis- Player A should be Cappy but I might have to go buy a decimals meter ;)

Crowds can cheer for whoever they like, to be a pro you need to have thick skin and block it out and I think V & S are mature enough to deal with it ( though when Serena was younger, I felt for her). However I still don't understand why some tennis crowds boo and act like mobs!

It was a joke. ;)

I mean, seriously this thread isn't appropriate at all. As far as I remember, Fans at the US Open have always been supportive towards Venus and Serena.
