Ashley played very well, I thought. Very conservatively, smart on a windy day. The only player I've seen today not making a ton of unforced errors.

Vera D. needs a better second serve. But she's young.

Ashley! :woohoo:

Douche-bag hit loads more winners than Chipmunk-girl. Harkleroad was very focused though. Looked like she'd been snacking on the choccy and got a smudge on her cheek. VD looked as though she was about to throw a tantrum the whole match, but maybe that's just the way her face is. Good match. Looking forward to Vera 2: The Return on Wednesday.

Well done Ashley! :) I was pleased to see her finally win a U.S. Open match. Vera D. played like a junior! :( But Vera Z. wont. And Ashley will have to play a great match to beat Zvonareva.

Aug 26th, 2003, 04:23 AM
Cat, you sure you weren't at the Open? In front of me there was an old man taking an obscene amount of pictures of Harkleroad. Figured it might be you.

Aug 26th, 2003, 04:52 AM
Ashley played smarter and that's why she won. Also, Vera's inexperience held her back... I'm sure if they play again in a year, Vera will demolish Ashley... Vera is more talented.

Aug 26th, 2003, 05:41 AM
I didn't necessarily think so...Vera didn't impress me that much, it's not like she was overpowering Ashley on a consistent basis, which a lot of the top players can do on hardcourts. I expected her to hit as hard as Sharapova, and that wasn't the case. Ashley looked just as talented to me, I especially liked that down the line forehand winner on the run ;)

Aug 26th, 2003, 07:24 AM
Well done Ash :)

Bad luck Vera

LOL...some people base an assumption on a player's abilities after watching ONE match  Vera is going places...sure she may have been less than impressive yesterday (I saw some of the match) but I'm sure in the next twelve months it will be a different player you see. Experience counts these days.

Aug 26th, 2003, 07:27 AM
vera d had way to many errors. but she had more winners too. oh well, at least she played through qualifying and its a pretty good start. GO VERA Z!beat ashley tomorrow!!!!

Aug 26th, 2003, 11:56 AM
It's bad luck Ashley has to meet Zvonareva. I don't see a chance for Ashley.

Aug 26th, 2003, 01:02 PM
Great win Ashley!

Aug 26th, 2003, 01:12 PM
This match showed nothing of what Vera D is capable of...I saw all of her qualie matches and is is GOOD and with the right training she can be great...she is very talented...she has all the shots...you guys just wait and see...

If Ash stays to her game plan with Vera Z, she could easily win the match...but she tends to let other people force her into playing "their" game...

Aug 26th, 2003, 02:41 PM
OMG Vera....
Yes, you can see one match and really figure out how talented someone is and how good she will be.
Of course, there's no such thing as a bad day, inexperience, nerves before first big match etc.
