1937 - Anita Lizana (Chile) d. Jadwiga Jedrzejowska (Poland)
1959 - Maria Bueno (Brazil) d. Christine Truman (Great Britain)
1963 - Maria Bueno (Brazil) d. Margaret Smith (Australia)
1973 - Margaret Smith Court (Australia) d. Evonne Goolagong (Australia)
1988 - Steffi Graf (West Germany) d. Gabriela Sabatini (Argentina)
1990 - Gabriela Sabatini (Argentina) d. Steffi Graf (West Germany)
1992 - Monica Seles (Yugoslavia) d. Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario (Spain)
1993 - Steffi Graf (Germany) d. Helena Sukova (Czech Republic)
1994 - Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario (Spain) d. Steffi Graf (Germany)

Last time was 1994, nine years ago. This year, the top two seeds are non-Americans and are red hot favourites to make the final. Will this be only the 10th year in history to have an all-foreigner final at the Open? I think Capriati is the only one with a realistic chance of preventing this.

it would be nice but based on 2003 alone, realistically it's not going to happen. the winner will be belgian. if that doesn't happen, i'm hoping she'll be french.

Would love to see Alicia in the final (well, duh!), but I recon its gonna be another all-Belgium.

Yes!!! That would be a dream come true for me...but I am cheering for Kim to make it to the final and take the title! But to see Alicia get to the QF or better...THAT WOULD BE EXCELLENT!!!!! :bounce:

Yes!!! I've dreamt about it already!!! I think that Alicia would use this as a diving board to keep stepping it up and improving. I'd love to see her inside the top 20, top 10...hell...top 5!!! :p But I'm hoping for little leaps first...not putting on too much pressure...just constant improvement and consistency. She can do it!!!! :bounce:

Yep....consistancy's exactly the thing right now. Our Alicia can beat the best, but loose to unknowns  ...but that'll all change in the next few years. It frustrating when you KNOW a player can be good enough for the top twenty, but just don't play well enough on a regular basis.

My answer to this stupid question is: so bloody what!! Why cant you just enjoy the tennis and not be so hooked up on nationalities. Thats why the word "Open" is in the tournament title!!! Its not the American's GS, its a GS which is being held in America.

This thread is a total

Oh get over it. I always post historical related threads. This one just happened to be about nationalities. If you find this boring, don't enter my threads in the future. Now shooo!

Yes, she lost to Graf 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.

I find it more interesting that the final hasn't gone to three sets since 1995.

i think it really speaks to the strength of american tennis that there have been so few years without an american in the final....
