Davenport skips U.S. Open practice session with injury

NEW YORK (AP) - Lindsay Davenport canceled her scheduled practice session Sunday leading into the U.S. Open because of a troublesome left foot, though she still planned to play in the tournament.

The injury forced Davenport to retire midway through the championship match of the Pilot Pen against Jennifer Capriati on Saturday.

Davenport drove straight from New Haven, Conn., to New York on Saturday and was examined by a U.S. Open doctor, who gave her a cortisone shot.

She has been struggling with a painful nerve disorder in her left foot and was noticeably limping against Capriati, who was leading 6-2, 4-0 when Davenport walked to the net and ended the match.

``She has been advised by doctors to stay off her feet today,'' Davenport's agent, Tony Godsick, said Sunday. ``She has every intention of playing in the U.S. Open.''

Godsick said that Davenport asked Open officials to give her as late a starting time as possible for her first-round match against Els Callens of Belgium. Davenport is scheduled to play the third match Monday morning in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

With both Serena and Venus Williams skipping the Open because of injuries, the third-seeded Davenport is the only woman in the draw who has won here before. Davenport won the 1998 Open for her first Grand Slam title.

Sorry to say this Lindsay fans, but it is looking like she will either withdraw or Els Callens has a shot at upsetting her because Els isn't that bad of a player.

Considering she is the only former women's championin the draw, you would have tought that they would let her play the night session, but I guess since Kim is the new number one, they had to let her play at night.
