Steffi was 39-13 vs. these players. Maybe she could hang in this era.

"I didn't know Anna beat Graf"

then you probably also don't know that steffi was ranked 91. that sets that match in perspective since people like to call it the most amazing match ever :o

Who called it the most amazing match ever?? Was Steffi playing well?? I'm assuming she was coming back from injury??

lol irma...
steffi could hang around in this era if she was able to play her best NOW. she beat a lot of those players when they were nowhere near their potential but also steffi was getting older... so, hmmmm.

I wish I had her matches against V and S on tape. I saw the Wimby match, but I don't remember a thing about it besides that Venus lost and what little I've seen on video clips.

selesrules;) (but then he also calls the key biscane match against monica great which says a lot about his love for monica :o)

and with steffi you don't only need to look how she plays but also how she acts. if steffi freaks out. it's alarm time :o
and yes steffi came back from injury. 3 days before she was not even ranked, even tauziat lead her in a match and the week after she lost zwereva which also says a lot

Hey nothing about Nat! :fiery:

Nathalie Tauziat is the greatest ever! :p

Zvereva played a great match against Steffi. To me it was a bit of a Lori McNeil rereun I thought.

Poor Anna paid the price for beating Steffi though with that injury she got though.

Had steffi continued, it would be different statistics we're reading right now. She's smart enough to realize that her days are numbered and don't wanna destroy her record.

I doubt steffi had ever lost to justine. I don't see anything steffi had not handled on a normal day also not 98;)

Anna is only one of four players to have beaten Graff on grass in the 90's or something.

moby
Aug 24th, 2003, 11:15 AM
really?

the other 3 are lori, natasha and lindsay then

Dava
Aug 24th, 2003, 11:19 AM
Yeah it says something like that in the back of Annas comupter game, theres a mini bio.

irma
Aug 24th, 2003, 11:19 AM
zina garrison

but zina garrison and lori mc neil beat a one ranked steffi. no matter if steffi had surgery right after, she was still number 1. so that's better then a 91 ranked steffi who had hardly played for 1,5 years

if losing after a 7 week break is legal then this is legal a 100 times more :p

Dava
Aug 24th, 2003, 11:22 AM
But what about the fact that Anna was injured, and after this atch didnt play for four months?

irma
Aug 24th, 2003, 11:22 AM
I am still sorry that I cursed anna though even when it was by accident

irma
Aug 24th, 2003, 11:23 AM

Then more Kudos to Anna!

irma
Aug 24th, 2003, 11:26 AM
why is that kudos to anna?

that said she was mentally way stronger then. then she got injured and maybe with a good coach who could handle problem instead of crying like a baby things would have been very different

it was a 3 point difference.

Cos she is facing the greatest player ever. Look Dani must have choked playing Nav, who is one of the greatest, so whether Steffi is ranked 1, or 101 she is still going to be hard to beat, becuase of who she is. Anna is especially fragile on court. I watched that match and she was the better player, and deserved to win.

irma
Aug 24th, 2003, 11:30 AM
and according to mac steffi was tired because she had been busy the night before instead of playing mixed with him. did the male runner up looked flat too? (I didn't see it since I was crying  )

Dava
Aug 24th, 2003, 11:31 AM
I thought Steffi pulled out of the mized as thats how Anna and Jonas made the final.

anna was not choking against steffi. I meant that her mental problems started after she came back from that hand injury with the double fault problems

Dava
Aug 24th, 2003, 11:34 AM
Oh yes that true, she was never the same again after that injury.

You know looking back I was sad when Steffi lost that match, cos she was my favortie player back then.

irma
Aug 24th, 2003, 11:35 AM
and I don't say anna didn't deserve to win, just some people claim that was the same steffi who won 7 wimbledon titles and that's ridiculous :o

Dava
Aug 24th, 2003, 11:37 AM
I know, people should just accept what happened to Monica, just like I have to accept that Anna would have probably won eastborne that year, and not be cursed by not winning a title.

irma
Aug 24th, 2003, 11:37 AM
that said steffi played far worse in the fourth round of the french 99 but so did anna :o

irma

Steffi knew just when to retire...she knew that she wouldnīt last long against the elite players of this era: Serena and Venus Williams. Funny, how Steffi had a though time with them from the going.

Serena wasnīt at the level she is now either. Remember, for a 16 year old Serena to beat Steffi Graf in the final for her first tier I, is a pretty big and impressive achievement.

Yep thatīs true. Consider this: Serena beat 4 former world no.1īs back to back to back to back to win the title as a 17 year old! Damn!!

Davenport-Seles-Hingis-Graf! Pretty impressive....

That's because she was being killed :p.

I'm not saying that Steffi was at her best, just that Zvereva still had to finish the match which is not easy to do, even against Steffi's shadow ;).

irma

that's true. some others when steffi was in a bad condition too failed;)

Looks like Lindsay had a nice rivalry with Steffi.
Steffi winning when Lindsay is not in her peak and Lindsay winning even if Steffi is still winning GS.

Exactly how old was Steffi when she retired?? Couldn't she have played a few more years?? I wish she had.

irma

steffi played for 17 years. she really deserved to quit. she was 30

bandabou
Aug 24th, 2003, 07:28 PM
Yep, she was already 30 years old...but I think that she pulled a Hingis on us. She knew that is a matter of time before Serena and Venus would make her an also-ran...and she didnīt want that to happen.

steffi always wanted to retire but first her life was a mess. then her rival got out so that was not a good time either, then her life was a mess again. then she got injured and didn't want to end that way then afterwards she retired :o

i'm glad she retired when she did as she was nowhere near as good as she was in the mid to early 90s. it was great that she won the FO and got the final at Wimbleon before she retired though.
