View Full Version : Can Capriati get her fourth slam to tie Venus's total?

The pressure is really going to be SQUARELY on JENN to break her grand slam drought, carry the hopes of America and to tie VENUS for total grand slam singles titles and surpass her in different slams won (oz, RG, US). Can she do it?

Hope not cuz I want Juju or kim to win but if jenjen wins i will be happy too cuz I would love to see her tie Venus in this dept and keep her lead on venus for weeks at #1!!! (17 for cappy and 11 Venus. btw serena with 57!!! Hingis with 209!!!!! GRAF with 377!!!! )

I disagree. The pressure is on the Belgians. Certainly Jen winning a tourney the week before a slam makes her more of a favorite, but she hasn't been close to winning a slam in quite some time. I think jen could care less about tying Venus with 4 slams, or anything else along those lines. As for carrying the hopes of America...come on!

Jen's play the past several days has been phenomenal. She has finally found the balance between offense and defense, after being primarily a defensive player the last year or so. When Jen is confident, serving well and letting loose with her forehand, she is to be reckoned with.

And praise the lord she has been hitting angles and moving her opponent around more. Her strange strategy of hitting to the center of the court had to go.

Go Jen!!!!!!!

i agree Mark except I still think when you are at your home tournament that the pressure is highest on you especially after winning today. But her confidence should be high. Kim is under pressure to show she can even win her first grand slam and Justine is under pressure to show she can win her second but Still I think Jenn will get the most hype and pressure.

Nope, with her questionable focus and physical condition, the Rude One will not win this or any future GS singles title.

Disagree with the posts here. Capriati plays better when she's the hunter, not the hunted. She plays better that way too, she said she now has PERFECT preparation for the Open. No, she clearly doesn't feel any pressure.

If there's anyone who WILL feel the Yeeps, it will be Miss Kim Clijsters. She doesn't admit that she is mentally weak in big matches, and that will hurt her in the long run. This is the GOLDEN opportunity for Mrs. Leyton Hewitt;)

Ms. Capriati is looking very very strong to claim her 4th Major;) She and Justine are the strongest coming in, its too bad they are in the same half of the draw:(

Not Jen. not Henin and not any other player during this US Open but
Kim Clijsters has the pressure. She is world number #1 without a slam.

It is OK. treufreund can hate on the Williams all he wants, but it is doubtful that Jennifer will ever have the career that Venus and Serena will have. Both have more tournament wins than her (Venus has 29, I think Serena has 23 or 24 and Jenniferr doesn't even have 15 yet, though she has been in tennis since 19900) and they will have more chances to win Slams than she will since they are still in early 20's.

They said they wouldn't play afterr they turn 30, which means, barring and injured shortened career, look for Venus to play until 2010 and Serean to play until 2011. Even still, their careers will outshine Jennifer's.

I am not worried about how Venus’ record compares to anyone else’s on the tour. Venus has achieved a lot more in her brief career on the tour than most players have in their entire career. Most players would love to trade records with her.

Venus and Serena’s names will be etched in tennis history.

I think Jennifer has a good shot at the title. I'm not saying because she has won New Heaven which I don't really consider a big win given she didn't beat Lindsay legitimately (Don't take me wrong here. A win is a win.) But then again, she finally put an end to that long title drought which should give her some confidence. Regardless, she has the game to beat anybody so if she comes out on fire, she can beat the likes of Kim and Justine. I think the odds still favor the Belgians but the fact that Jennifer hasn't beaten either of them so long actually could work for Jen. Sometimes, a breakthru comes when it's not really expected.
All said, I think Jennifer will go all the way to the title... just my two cents..

i realize that you are a bit upset that the only two tennis players you watch and care about are not gonna be playing in the open next week, but do try to open up your small, narrow mind and realize that there ARE other tennis players out there.

and, i am shocked that a person like you, always so quick to point out racial prejudice and bigotry, continue to make insinuations and undertones toward others by referring to them by their nationality/race/ethnicity in a negative manner. this is SO NOT the first time you've done this either. like i said in the above paragraph, try to open up your small and narrow mind and realize there are more than one race/nationality/ethnicity out there.

finally, capriati has never beaten a williams in a grand slam final, but niether williams have beaten capriati in a grand slam final either. they have, however, beaten all of each other in grand slam MATCHES. cappy beat serena at wimby 2001 and RG 2001. Go back and read my post. I SAID that Serena had the carer Grand Slam which is WINNING ALL FOUR GRAND SLAM TOURNAMENTS IN DIFFERENT CALENDAR YEARS (USO 1999, FO and Wimbeldon, 2002 and AO 2003). I did not say she won the CALENDAR YEAR SLAM, WHICH IS WINNING ALL FOUR GRAND SLAMS IN A CALNEDAR YEAR. The last time that was done it was done in 1988 by Steffi Graf (aka Mrs. Andre Agassi).

So Serena has done the (career Grand) Slam thing and is the only active female player to do so.

For the record Jen has NEVER beaten Venus GS or otherwise. However they have met only about four times. Jen gave Venus one battle at Miami 2001.

Jen and Serena ALWAYS battle very close, but Serena has eeKed out a win in the last EIGHT matches.

While I am a big Serena fan, I am pulling for Jen to win this title. If not it would be nice to see Lindsay win another Slam.

That's specualation about the Slam wins at this point because she would still have had to play Steffi Graf, Aranxta and later Martina (and to a lesser extent, Venus). Also you would have to factor in Monica, if she wasn't stabbed. Also keep in mind that she wasn't winning Slams when she was in her prime as a teenager and that was becasue of the afore mentioned Monica

There isn't really any comparison between Jennifer and Venus' careers since it is obvious that when Venus retires, she would have won more titles (singles and doubles) than Jennifer and possibly more Slam titles (remember, she is only 23).

jenny161185
Aug 24th, 2003, 05:35 PM
Jennifer never got the chance to make a BIG breakthrough at the slams - She and Monica had an amazing match at the USOpen so you cant say shw ouldnt of challenged these people for the slams - her game also never really got a chance to develop so who knows how many slams she could've had :)

That might be true but it is no one else's fault but Jennifer's that she didn't have the type of career that she should have had.

Aug 24th, 2003, 05:51 PM
Little things, first: what Jen might have done without her "vacation from tennis" is irrelevant. She wasn't stabbed, and regardless, Venus has done way better in Tier I and II events anyway, plus setting up life after tennis (and mentoring Serena re. both tennis and life?). In this area, perhaps Jen can inspire players with real life issues like Patty and Dani that one's career can often be "rebuilt". Now, "Issue #1": It's unfortunate IMO when posters act like a mere tennis player is carrying the worthiness of a nation on his or her shoulders. Now we've sunk even lower as the W/S get treated by some as less than fully American, and (SOME) of their fans "retaliate" by doing the same re. (in this case TR re. Jen's ancestry). Bulletin to haters on both sides: They're ALL bonafide Americans, deal with it!

You know what, Cappy doesnt care if she ties, beat, or is beaten in the # of Grand Slam titles she wins comparable to Venus, Serena, Juju, or anybody... so why should we carry on about this!!! Cappy has said it many times this year... she has proven everything she needed to prove to herself ALREADY in tennis, and isn't playing to prove anything to anybody. SHE IS PLAYING 'CAUSE SHE LOVES TO PLAY...PERIOD!

Having said all that, I think she played great this whole week, and has a great chance to win the USO. She won 3 setters, beat 2 top 6 players this week, and her game and confidence are soaring at the moment. And I dont want to hear this BS about her win not really counting because of the retirements.... MOMO's was bullshit. SHe was getting her ass kicked and being the mental midget she is she walked off trailing 1-3 in the 2nd set, siting an upset tummy..whatever! I like MOMO, but she just couldnt handle that someone she has beaten 4 times in a row, was not beating her ass into oblivion. As far as Davey, everyone at the tourney said she was fine until the 3rd game of the 2nd set. I hope she feels better and can play the USO, but she got beaten by Cappy fair and square.

If the thread is like this one then YES!! ASV has 4 GS titles, but you see treufreund didn't mention her. And any others who have 4 GS titles. He seems to think Cappy getting her 4th GS title means she is on the same playing level as Venus. I don't think Serena tying Monica means anything between their two playing levels.

Jen with a title under her belt is full of more confidence and she has finally realised she has weapons and that she can use them!

I know she won with 2 w/o's but she won the first two sets emphatically and was playing aggressive tennis.

Jen will not consider herself as a favoruite, therefore she will not feel the pressure (even moreso because the Williams are not around).

I see crowd support, confidence from a title and a new found aggressiveness definitelt putting jen in the Top 3 faves for the Open, maybe even No. 1/2.

Go Jennifer!! :)
