Every forum has avatars, menstennisforums.com too

I wonder why haven't we this feature :(

Custom avatars and profile picture also isn't bad idea

I'm sorry but we just have too many members to allow avatars. If you see a board with 20.000 members that have avatars please let us know so we can contact them on how they handle the load on their servers. ;)

Yes but the problem is that out of those 20000, how many actually posts?

There are SO MANY people with 0 posts, can't you just delete them?

I go to a board with about 3000 members, all fairly active. It has avatars, but they're small, there's a limit to the size, and they also have signatures that enable graphic links. So I think it's a similar comparison.

Anyway, I can live without avatars, I have and others can too, but I just don't see the problem with having them.

Also you could make it so that you can't upload any avatars, just have them link to other sites, or you use up their bandwidth, not this site's.

You're right, Sam L - most of those 20,000 never post.

However, deleting their accounts would mean they can't see half of the threads; lots of people register just to look around, I suppose.
Many may never come back after a few times... but the same goes for people who HAVE posted: some suddenly decide to quit, and vanish into thin air.

Anyway, I don't see why they should be deleted: it's not them who are going to use up computer-resources with avatars :p.

But this discussion is meaningless, since it was not because of too many members that avatars were discontinued. It worked quite well after the upgrade, after all. If I'm not mistaken it was copyright trouble; people submitting avatars they took from other websites without permission... you can't expect from the webmaster here to check for copyrights for every picture.

But like you I can live without them; I'd rather have a smooth working no-fringes board than a slow, flashy one anyway :).

lots, but of course not 20.000 ;)

because you have to be logged in to see several parts of this forum, so not all people want to participate in our daily flame wars but do want to read them ;)

Yeah, i also post on boards where they allow avatars 80*80 or smaller but those thingies i wouldn't call that avatars, you hardly can make out what's on them anyway.

About the sigs. Lots of our members don't even know what's reasonable with only text allowed, so imagine if we'd give them the option to use graphics.

Linking to other sites and using their bandwidth would even increase the problems we have with copyrights and other legal issues. If people would start using bandwidth of other sites we'd sure get complaints from them.

If we could force everyone to use personal webspace then this could be an option. But then you're stuck to the speed of all those different sites and loading a page could take ages, including people with high speed connection.

Avatars are cool and fun, but they have no immediate use but to personalise your posts. So one advantage over several disadvantages...

Well, it isn't me who decides anyway, it's all in the hands of poe and wtn_amanda, i'm just giving a different view. :)

the official Michelle Branch message board has more members than this board and it has avatars ;) Just a thought, i really don't mind whether we have avatars here or not

if members ova-do it on the sigs (as threads in this very forum have discussed), why the hell don't you, Poe, Amanda, et al impose "what's reasonable" by limiting bytes, characters, whatever in sigs?

there is a character limit of me thinks 500, but of course people can make their sig size as big as they want, implementing a better system seems difficult to make, but people do report oversized sigs and then they're taking care off ;)

stacey, yeah, ive already been contacted by other members who also came to me with big sites of musicstars. hehe, /me wonders how they do it ;)

Actually we have profile pictures that we can customize. Why can't those be "moved out front" to be our avatars :)?

I agree with carot...those little tiny avatars that can only be like 6-8 kb stinks...:( All I can say is should've donated some money (this is to the oldies) when they needed help. ;)

probably because if one wants to see your profile picture s/he has to click your profile, if it becomes your avatar it's loaded with every single one of your posts?

next to the technical issues - for which i'm unaware of the status - there's now also the copyright issue. people still don't understand they're not allowed to post gettyimages for instance. seeing they can't copy the link anymore they go all out of their way just to post that picture anyway lol, instead of just understanding it's not allowed. so yeah, i don't think our members are ready to handle avatars ;)

but you'll need to contact wtn_amanda for a clear response on avatars, she has the right answers, wtn_amanda is teh cool

www.gamingforce.com/forums :) I'm there for a longer time than I am here, and I think they're bigger than us. By the way, I gotta say the Control Panel interface is the same... and some other stuff are.

i noticed your post, and as you said, they use the same board software than we do (vBulletin), only difference is they have an older version... When i checked now there were 310 peops online, compared to our 415, which is not thát much of a difference, so yeah, their forum kicks ass as it's faster than ours too. but i don't have the technical knowledge to ask them which servers or hardware they use to obtain that result lol. we can only hope wtn_amanda sees this too ;)

nintendo.com

they have small pre-selected avatars.

every now and then they have a contest to add new ones. i think right now they have 100+ different ones to choose from.

i ma not suggesting that that be done here, just saying thats how they do it.

they used to have something like that here...half of us didn't bother with the avatars and wouldn't have them viewable since they were all the same.

it's not worth having the avatar option unless you get custom ;)
