Again, this is going to take awhile to post all the pics.

Since the Open maindraw is getting closer, there are more top players practicing at the National Tennis Center. I was able to catch some of them which was awesome. As I have said before, if you want a full size picture emailed to you, just let me know.

It wasn't as sunny today, so the weather was much more pleasant. I arrived at the tennis center at around noon. I couldn't believe it - Jankovic was walking off the court and Ashley was not far behind. The latter was especially surprising. Day ended with some gritty battles. Match of the day was Wheeler and Barna. Match took forever and Wheeler was cramping badly. Amazingly, she pulled out the third set. Wheeler served for the match at 5-3 in the third and was broken. Then she broke back to win. Both players gave their all and were grunting loudly.

My next trip to the Open will be on Tuesday. Too bad I won't be there for the roving circus that will be Kornikova. Maybe she stay around for the second week and I will get to see her.

As I mentioned, these two were literally walking off the court when I arrived. See picture.

After the Jankovic match, I ran over to see Strycova. She had just won the first set. I took some pictures, and then went over to watch Groenefeld and Ashley.

I am a bit surprised that Strycova has done so well. She is small and pudgy and I didn't think she would make an easy transition to the pros. But she appears to be doing well.

srg1
Aug 22nd, 2003, 04:02 AM
I only saw a couple of points of this match. Entire match couldn't have lasted much more than an hour. I am surprised at how easily Ashley won. Groenefeld will get better over time as she gets stronger.

One of the pics of Ashley was taken after the match when she was with her entourage.

When I arrived at this match, Baker had lost the first set. Baker did everything she could against Sequera. She mixed up her shots. She charged the net. Nothing worked consistently. Sequera is small, but she is quick with enough power to hit winners. Baker, although she is in good shape, is still a little slow when she has to change directions. I think her quickness will improve as she grows into her body.

In the match, there were many points that Baker would seemingly be in control. However, Baker has a long windup which gave Sequera a chance to recover. Then Sequera would hit a winner to end the point.

The crowd was large for this match. I think Baker's good looks was the draw.

Baker, gracious as usual, signed autographs after the match. See picture. Kids were all over her.

I had never heard of Lastra. Someone today told me she played college tennis at Stanford. She is small and quick. I would compare her to Sequera. Kleinova seemed quite frustrated and could do no right today. In the second set, she completely missed one overhead. It was horrible. Lastra pretty much chased down everything hit at her.

I don't know anything about Liggan, so I was surprised by the score since I know Birnerova had an excellent junior career. Didn't watch the match. But I will say I was not impressed with Birnerova's performance against Avants two days ago.

Periodically, I walked over to the practice courts to see what was going on. To my pleasant surprise, Harkleroad was practicing. I stuck my camera through the fence to get pics. They have security all over the place. By the way, I am posting the pictures for the most part chronologically as I experienced things during the day.

Cochran gave all she had against Sun. Cochran is a great fighter. But Sun was too much. Sun is a solid player. Not flashy. I think she is one of those players that will bounce around between 50 and 100 in the world.

srg1

I then got lucky again and saw Harkleroad practicing on different practice courts. It was Harkleroad, Raymond, Amber Liu (I believe), and Cargill (I just don't know who it is - please help).

srg1
Aug 22nd, 2003, 07:39 AM
No Salerni. No Clijsters. I am not going tomorrow, so I will not be able to get pics of Salerni. I might be able to get them if I see them next Tuesday in the main draw.

Isn't the unknown player Ansley Cargill?

srg1
Aug 22nd, 2003, 07:50 AM
I also saw Safina twice today. Her opponent in the first round is Carly Gullickson who I watched practice today. She is very cute and seemed sweet.

By the way, both Harkleroad and Gullickson appeared to be coached by Jay Berger.

"Harkleroad reached the junior final last year when she was coached by the former Argentine star Jose Luis Clerc. She is playing this year despite tendinitis in her right elbow that forces her to wear a great amount of tape on her right arm."

This was a great match. Both players fought extremely hard and were well matched. I was impressed with Zheng. She is better than I thought. Large crowd for this match. Appeared that one side of the court had people rooting for Zheng and the other side had Kirilenko supporters. I think the difference here is that Kirilenko was able to come up with the big shot when she needed it. She is more explosive than Zheng.

By the way, what do you think will happen after Kirilenko finishes growing up? She still looks so young. I think she has a lot of physical changes coming soon.

This match was fairly even. Pichet took more chances than Kalyuzhnaya and I think that is why she won. She hit out more. Pichet did get a code warning in the first set after an overrule she didn't like. She spoke in French, so I assume the umpire understood her.

Thanks for the photo of Jie. Given the ratio of photos posted, I won't ask you were you were sitting ;) .

I agree with you that the Chinese players need to work on their explosive strength.

Jie took the lead in the 2nd set tie-break (1-2, her serve to follow), but could not hold her serves :( .

I saw a little of this match. Yan had the crowd clapping it up in the tiebreak in the second set. She looked good. Lanky girl. I think she has the most potential of the Chinese girls.

I would believe that the 'unknown' player is Sun Tian-Tian, isn't it :) .

It looks like her and it is the same racquet brand (Dunlop).

The grl singing the tennis balls might be Alicia Molik .... its hard to see cause of the hat but i think it is.

Thanks so much ! :D

One question: Do you have a few more words on the Barna vs. Wheeler match ? Was Wheeler already cramping in the 2nd set ? There was a very long break on set-point for Barna.
Too bad Adriana couldn't take advantage of that. :( :(

srg1
Aug 22nd, 2003, 01:43 PM
I think the unknown woman stretching is Sun. As far as the woman signing, I am not so sure it is Molik. Molik is almost 6 feet tall, correct? And this woman is not very tall.

srg1
Aug 22nd, 2003, 01:46 PM
I didn't watch most of the match except for poking my head in to check the score. I watched the end of the match. But I did get the impression that Wheeler had been cramping for awhile.

First of all - who is Sammy? Samantha Reeves? Secondly - when would you like me to get this picture? I will not be at the Open until Tuesday. How would you like me to get this picture? Do you have a GPS locator so I can find Sammy? If she is practicing off site, I need to be able to find her.

Your very first picture (page 1) looks like Ansley from afar. The ones above does NOT look like her. She's with Adidas and the cap she's wearing is not Adidas. I don't think the shirt is as well. She's also a lefthander.

The reason I went crazy at the Open taking pics was so that everyone could enjoy them. So I have no problem with you posting them elsewhere. I actually went today for a few hours and will post the pics later. A bunch of people I didn't recognize, but I tokk pictures anyway. I have to do some things tonight first before I spend the time posting. I did get a couple of far away pictures of Hantuchova.
