... I wonder when (and why) this has been changed again?
I discovered it purely by accident. :p

I just tested it. Yay, it works. :)

Maybe the mods were tired of people asking them to delete threads all the time. ;)

i changed it months ago when somebody asked about it in this forum

Thanks for sharing this, Poe. :D

So now we're looking stupid, Dark .

Shall I delete this thread and keep it our litlle secret? :secret: - There might be 3 or 4 other people out there who don't know it yet .

Hoooooold it!!!

Dark - you didn't delete the test-thread in Marty-Party, did you?

I just lost about a dozen posts :(. And I was brilliant in that thread. Brilliant, I tell you!

You could delete this thread. The irony. :o

Or you could just leave it, so others will know that this feature is working again.

Yes, that's precisely the thread that I deleted to test it out.

I was pretty good in that thread also. :o But life goes on. :o

I don't like it. I don't think you should be able to delete a thread after other people have posted in it, cos then you're deleting peoples posts. Which is bad. Thanks. :)

I kind of agree. Thanks :)

This feature doesn't exist for people to just delete threads. But sometimes one posts a thread making errors in it (a poll for instance) and want to delete it, or if there's a doublepost of a thread cos you hit the reply button twice, or if you notice you posted about something that already has a thread,...

I think it's only normal people can delete those threads. If people abuse of this feature then it's their problem.

Carot - the people who abuse the feature aren't the ones who have a problem. It's the others who have posted in that thread who have...

But searching back through this forum I found this post from Poe (http://www.wtaworld.com/showthread.php?p=1867047&postcount=3), stating we can ask to have a thread back if we posted in it.

So... can somebody bring back the thread Darkheart deleted, please? I DID post in it. Thanks :).

(Wouldn't it be possible to program some kind of restriction into the feature? Like: ok, you can delete your own thread, but only when it doesn't have more than 5 posts? That would take care of all the examples carot was giving, but would leave other threads...)

I'm happy you deleted your first post, it's always nice to see you didn't lose it completely as your comparaison was way out of line. We're talking about posts on a message board here, try to put things in perspective, will you. :p

I still don't see a problem if someone wants to delete the thread he started. On almost every message board, the administrators will prune the entire board once in a while which makes threads disappear too (omg how can i sleep knowing so many of my excellent posts have been lost in cyberspace!). We don't do that here on WTAworld so consider yourself lucky. Did you even know that with lots of the software some boards use even with regular pruning people lose their postnumber? Oh, the horror that would be on this board where everyone cherishes their number of posts like it's the Holy Grail itself. :D

If people are so fond of their own words then they should save threads (ex. "Show Printable Version" Option), or save their own posts, print them out and put them in the bathroom where they can see them daily.

Overreacting? Sure. But the difference is i know that i overreact. :p Plus, you don't see the amount of deleted threads in General Messages that were deleted because of the reasons i stated in my previous post. Knowing this feature was back since several months and you didn't even notice i don't think many of our members are abusing of it.

Ok, as i'm in a good mood ;) i'll answer your questions too.

- I'll see what i can do, but i'm on an old comp here. It would have been nice if you had stated where to find that thread though. *cough*

*edit* - can't find it, so maybe someone already put it back, or i'm not looking in the right forum (marti-party).

- I don't know if that is possible in the software. It might be a good idea, but you'll have to ask wta_amanda if that's technically a possibility. Maybe the date would be a better criteria than the number of posts posted though, not sure.

Why are you happy I deleted that post?

I did not delete it because I thought my comparison was "way out of line" or because I thought I was overreacting or something. It was exaggerated, yes - the best comparisons are exaggerated. In fact, about the first thing I stated in that post was how exaggerated it would be: "Paraphrasing in true eta-psi-style". I suppose you haven't seen some of eta-psi's paraphrasings of the last few weeks, or you would have understood this reference. S/he takes someones words (Sabine Appelmans', for instance) and distorts them out of proportion. That's what I was doing with yours, yes... but I thought I was doing it with a lot of humor. Seems I failed pityfully...

I deleted that post because once posted I remembered I had intended to search for the thread mentioned by Poe, maybe linking to it in my post. Since I didn't know how much time it would take, I decided to delete the post for now, instead of leaving it incomplete and editing it later. That's why I still have it, btw.
Once I had found Poe's post, I thought it more important to ask for the deleted thread back instead of being funny at all costs.

But I still think it was rather funny - if you will look at it again?

Let me paraphrase this, in true eta-psi-style:

"This weapon doesn't exist for people to kill other people with. But sometimes you need to shoot a rat - rats happen. Instead of having to bother the nice police-people when you have to shoot a rat, we allow each citizen to have his own Kalashnikov.

It seems only normal that people can shoot rats. If they would abuse their Kalashnikovs to shoot other people then that's their problem."

Brrrr.

While I agree that rats happen, and while it IS bothersome to have to call a police person for every single rat, it's not only rats that get killed by Kalashnikovs, as everyone knows... that's why we weren't allowed to have them in the first place.

People who abuse this weapon don't have a problem... it's their victims who have problems.

It's not such a big deal, really - but it's annoying to lose (sometimes lots of) posts just because the thread-starter is in a bad mood. If the police people don't want to be bothered with mere rats, wouldn't it be possible to program some kind of restriction into the feature?

For instance: you can delete your own thread, but only if it counts no more than 5 posts, or something like that... That would see the rats off, AND protect the innocents.

Thanks :).

See? Noth much wrong with it, imo - you must have seen it too fleetingly.

As for the rest of your post:
I DID notice I was losing a few posts now and again, but I thought I must be mistaken, since I knew people couldn't delete threads anymore
(it's not like the change was heralded all over the board - no announcement was made, the thread-title is totally unrevealing, and the thread wasn't made sticky even)
how could a feature being seriously abused anyway, if most members aren't even aware it exists?
I though that the fact that people DID abuse the feature in the past was the reason why it was changed after the upgrade of the software
of course messageboards and their messages are totally unimportant - nothing is important in the light that we must all die
... so let's give everybody the possibility to delete every post s/he doesn't like: it would make the board much, MUCH cleaner
the amount of posts has become more important in view of the reputation-feature (which is, agreed, totally unimportant itself - let's get rid of it)̣̣

But geez, am I happy you're in a good mood :D :) ;) *phew*

The thread I was referring to was called "Test" and belonged to the Marti-Party forum. It was started by Darkheart months ago (March? April?) and deleted by him again on August the 21th, between 04:24 PM and 04:48 PM. It was probably some time ago somebody had posted in it...

It still isn't back. (hint, hint)

Ok, I hereby ask wtn_amanda (she changed her name ;)) if it would be possible to change the thread-deletion feature the way I proposed...

... but I'm only a lowly mortal, carot, I'm not as near to the gods like your splendid admin-self :D :worship:  :lickboots: :kissass:. If you think it's a good proposal, maybe you could ask her too :) :) :)?

Short reply:

I only cruised through the deleted post, as... well, you know, it was deleted. ;) I still don't get it apparently, but you're right that i haven't been reading much (so def. not General Messages) as i'm experiencing some computer problems. So the eta psi impression goes beyond my knowledge (which happens only rarely, as you must know! )

Computer problems must be the reason why i'm having this bad mood lately, which was abruptely ended when i was typing my reply this morning, as i stated in that particular post.

About your remarks.
- I think most people *did* know they could delete their threads, as lots of them did as again i stated in my previous post. The question is: did they even know we had it gone for a while?
- Some people abused of it indeed, but now we have had the two options and we find it better to let people delete their threads. Yes, there can be abuse, but there are more advantages than the little abusive use there was.
- Your idea about letting anyone delete any post sounds interesting and it'll be surely discussed at the next WTAworld Top Meeting. It would be an entire new way of message board posting. We're onto something here. Finally noone would harass us anymore with reported posts.
- I think you're here long enough to realise the amount of posts was already a big issue long before we installed the rep feature. Hell, it goes back to Sanex where i was one of the kiddies who wanted mucho posts myself, no shame in admitting that.
- I *will* look back at that thread and try to find it. Deletion date isn't as important as last post date though, so if anyone knows that one it would help.

... but I'm only a lowly mortal, carot, I'm not as near to the gods like your splendid admin-self :D :worship:  :lickboots: :kissass:. If you think it's a good proposal, maybe you could ask her too :) :) :)?

At least you know your place!

And i'm sorry but i don't talk to wtn_amanda anymore since she refused to give me those topless pics of her she promised. Hey, we live in a tough world, and two can play it tough.

Wow, this good mood just keeps on going. :)

Poe

the main reason I allowed deleting your own threads again is because a software upgrade allowed admins to "undelete" any topic that was deleted by a member... so abuse isn't really an issue anymore

if somebody deletes a topic with lots of replies somebody need only mention it to an admin and we can restore it... that's a lot less work for us (since it hasn't even happened once yet) then responding to every single request to delete a topic

Yes I am  (but only slightly, though - don't worry  )

Not as much by those 14 posts I lost twice now, as by the fact that it would have been really easy for an admin to reset them (I know)... but that nevertheless it wasn't done. "Timeloop", yeah.
