Had to create this, as a good doubles performance with Sveta should see her break into the top 10 again, for the first time in ooh, a long time.

Sad to see that after two GS mixed crowns this year with Leander Paes, they'll be unable to partner up at Flushing Meadows, as he has been hospitalized with suspected brain tumour. Best of luck to him.

I wonder if she'll still play mixed, and who with, at this late stage?

I was thinking about Max Mirnyi could be her doubles partner because both played much better this year than they did last year.

I know they together twice and don't success but try give him another chance? ;)

I expect she will find a mixed partner... Maybe John MacEnroe? ;)

She's confirmed that she wont play in the mixed doubles now; took this from a post in GM:

August 22, 2003
NEW YORK (AP) -- Martina Navratilova won't play mixed doubles at the U.S. Open because her regular partner, Leander Paes, is hospitalized with a brain lesion.

They teamed to win two of the first three Grand Slam titles this year, at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

``I will not be playing mixed doubles at the U.S. Open without Leander Paes because he is a true partner, and the special connection we share cannot be replaced,'' Navratilova said Friday. ``Our bond was much more than winning titles, and my thoughts are with this wonderful man for a speedy and full recovery.''

Paes, 30, checked himself into a hospital near his Orlando, Fla., home Sunday after having headaches for three days. A scan detected the lesion, and he was transferred to a cancer center Tuesday. It wasn't immediately clear what caused his illness.

``Leander has an amazing attitude and is such a positive person, and I know those attributes are working for him even at this difficult time,'' Navratilova said. ``He and I have promised each other we would team again as soon as he gets well, and I can't wait.''

Their victory at the All England Club in July gave Navratilova a record-tying career total of 20 titles at Wimbledon from singles, doubles and mixed doubles. She also became, at 46, the oldest player to win a Wimbledon title.

Navratilova will play women's doubles with Svetlana Kuznetsova at the U.S. Open, which starts Monday.

Good luck to Martina & Sveta.

Nice words from the old gal about Leander. I'm sure she doesn't mind not playing mixed as the two slam titles she took this year with Paes was probably way more than she dared hope for this season.

Martina and Sveta are scheduled to play today (Thursday) against a "pickup" team and as much as I like Jill, I can't think that she and CMG will have anything at all to hurt "our" team with.

Go Sveta and Martina! :)

Sveta and Martina should be a lock for the season-ending championships! Especially if they do well here at the US Open. I hope they can at least make the semifinals.

Itīs a fact they are close to be "in" for LA if Lindsay decides to do the surgery.

Feature match against Sharapova and Raymond. They should be all right. That's amazing -- martina in the top 10!

See my post about this match....

Anyway...after Martina and Svetlana won the match, courtside was mobbed with kids vying for autographs. After several minutes, Conchita went and took a digital camera out of her tennis bag. She went over to Svetlana and asked Svetlana to take her picture with Martina! Of course, Martina obliged and posed with Conchita while Svetlana snapped away! You should have seen Conchita...she was just BEAMING! It was really a nice endearing moment...very sweet.

Interesting news that top seeds Clijsters / Sugiyama may pull out of the doubles, as Kim will have to play 264 matches in 2 days if it ever stops raining...by my estimation that would be a great boost to Martina and Sveta's chances of reaching the final :)

Sep 3rd, 2003, 12:58 PM
Good Luck Martina and Sveta :D

Third round score:

(4) Svetlana Kuznetsova / Martina Navratilova (RUS/USA) d. Henrieta Nagyova / Maja Matevzic (SVK/SLO) 62 63

A good solid win, and it's happened: Clijsters / Sugiyama withdrew, meaning the top half of the draw is now wide open. Hope they dont get overexcited too soon, as they're only in the quarters (Huber/Maleeva up next, and they're no pushover), but this is a great opportunity now...

What I like about M. Navratilova, the way she plays this gutsy/risky serve & volley. Plays doubles how it should be played standing at the net. It will be difficult to win the US-Open doubles, if Martina & Sveta do so tennis is the winner, bet you'll have more viewers than the last GS doubles finals. BTW Jon, Navratilova was my first fav. player in women tennis.

Sep 5th, 2003, 01:29 PM
I remember when I first started watching tennis in the early-mid '80s I used to cheer on Evert against Navratilova :o I grew out of that though...;)

Sep 5th, 2003, 01:42 PM
That was entertainment. Evert showed what a great returner she was against Martina, more than just getting the first serve back Chrissie had to produce first class returns. I enjoyed to watch Chrissie vs. Martina one of my fav. matches.

QF: Martina and Sveta d. Huber / Maleeva 6-3 6-3 :D

Sep 5th, 2003, 08:00 PM
:bounce: :)

Sep 6th, 2003, 07:53 PM

SF: Martina & Sveta d. Bartoli/Casanova 6-4 7-6(0)

I'm really happy :) A first Grand Slam final for Sveta, and hopefully another GS title for Martina. The toughest of opposition in the final though; Ruano Pascual and Suarez. I dont think its beyond them, but its gonna be VERY difficult.

Nice tie-break, by the way ;)

Sep 6th, 2003, 08:14 PM
Well done Martina and Sveta :D :D

Well done Martina and Sveta :bounce: :worship: :bounce:

Sep 6th, 2003, 08:31 PM
Martina/Sveta have already beaten Vivi/Paolo this year. Hopefully they will win. I prefer GS doubles winners who are standing at the net, not staying behind. By staying behind you give not the best image of how doubles should be played and we have already a lack of television viewers worldwide.

Sep 6th, 2003, 09:34 PM
I really want Martina/Sveta to win!

Sep 6th, 2003, 10:17 PM
I have got to admit since Ai/Kim pulled out i think Maritna/Sveta have a chance even though there are playing a VERY expierienced team the finals i think they can pull it off which would be a major upset and i have to gpo for Sveta because my moms maden name is Kuznetsova and my last name is Kuznetsov

Sep 7th, 2003, 10:49 AM
Have Martina Nav. and Sveta K. ever lost in a final?

Must tape this match and the mixed doubles finals. :)

Sep 7th, 2003, 08:26 PM
lets go Sveta and Martina!!!!!!!!!
