Maggie won Moscow 2 or 3 times in the mid 1990's, but Moscow was not a Tier 1 then, so I think Maggie might only have 1 or 2 Tier 1's.

That was not a Tier 1 either. That was a small clay court event.

suddenly world no.1 Kim doesn´t look that impressive anymore huh?! 16 career titles and ONLY 2 tier I´s?!

Look at Serena: 23 titles, but SIX tier I´s and SiX slams plus one championships!! Damn, more than half of her titles is tier I or higher!!

Now that´s what I call impressive and she doesn´t even play that much either!! Serena knows the drill: QUALITY!!

no that was a pretty small clay tournament if I'm not mistaken. The equivalent of a tier 4 or so.

okay i'll correct that;) thanks!!

Aug 19th, 2003, 08:12 PM
Corrections: :)

Maggie does not have 4 Tier I titles... she has 2. 02 Moscow and 94 Zurich. Moscow in 94 & 95 was a Tier III title.

Are you talking about Lucerne?

That was a Tier III clay tourney.

In most of the Lindsay Websites and the Sanex WTA Tour, it just says 1993 European Championships, not Lucern or Zurich;) but it's corrected now and thank you!! :wavey:

Martina also won EVERY Tier 1 event, at least once. Not many can say that...if any current player

martamagica

You also might have Conchita's Tier I total too high... since she won Moscow 96, the last year it was Tier III. :)

Also i was looking at Conchita's Tier I's and she won the Italian Open 4 times:eek:! Hilton Head a couple of times as well as the German Open and yes, that Moscow 1996 does stick out in my mind.;)

martamagica
Aug 19th, 2003, 08:26 PM
Actually, Conchita has 9...

Rome 93-96, Berlin 98 & 00, Hilton Head (don't know the years, but I know she won twice), and Philly 93 (Philly was a Tier I from 93-95).

So, she does have 9. :)

martamagica
Aug 19th, 2003, 08:29 PM
Also, Iva Majoli has 3 Tier I titles, a grand slam, and I have to think at least 10 titles... if you want to add her.

That's because Venus wins mostly Tier II's, and a large part of her wins come from the Summer Cali Hard season... which is all Tier II's.

but I think Venus will win more San Diego titles, which we all know will be a Tier I next year;)

Monica's stats are just unbelievable..
53 freakin' titles! 9 Grand slams. its quite incredible...

I was impressed with Conchita's 9 Tier 1s. that is quite impressive too - she has more than serena and kim put together in terms of Tier 1s.

does anyone remember the thread on this board like 2 years ago which was entitled something like "WHEN will Hingis PASS Seles in terms of titles?"

I only bring that thread up because it was just amazing how quickly hingis was gobbling up those titles a few years ago. and seles was winning one every now and then so it did seem inevitable, to some, that hingis would catch her.

now they are BOTH out of tennis (one more permanently than the other..) (but hingis never did catch monica...)

another example of how unpredictable life, and tennis life, is...

2R d. Navratilova 6-4, 0-6, 6-3
3R d. Po 6-2, 6-3

*German Open 90
*Canadian Open 95, 96, 97, 98

She won Indian Wells 92' but at that time this was a Tier II ;)

Martina's 15 titles in Tier I are good but far away from Navratilova's 31 (1980-1993) and Steffi's 30 (1986-1996)

Tier I ranking:

1*Navratilova 31

Serena has never played in Tokyo
Justine has never played in Tokyo & Zurich
Venus has never played in Tokyo & Hilton Head/Charleston
Amelie has never played in Tokyo
Jennifer has never played in Moscow

:wavey: Agree with that post;) Yes, as a matter of fact, I believe I was the one who started that thread;) It was also amazing that we were all calculating as to when Martina will catch Monica, some said 2004, some 2005 and she might've possibly done it this year with the rate Hingis was racking up titles from 1997-2000;) It is unfortunate.....and life is terribly unpredictable.

i like Hingis's stats for the variety of different tournaments she played, the high total number of titles over a short period and the high percentages of big tournaments amongs her titles (22/40 or 55%of her titles were Grand Slams, Tier I's or the season-ending Championships!)

Serena has nearly 57% of her titles being big tourneys!!! All of the other players lag way behind percentagewise.

Martina Hingis won all of the 9 Tier I's available when she was active.

1997,1999,2000,2002 Tokyo

1998 Indian Wells

1997,2000 Miami

1997,1999 Hilton Head

1999 German Open

1998 Italian Open

1999,2000 Canadian Open

2000 Zurich

2000 Moscow

.............really she'd won everything there is to win, but that Roland Gaross:( that will be forever missing in her crown jewels (unless of course she gets inspired and pulls a Monica or a Jen  :). Martina also never really cared about the Olympics. She would've had a great chance to medalling in 2000 Sydney!

Many of these players have been contenders for years (remember Serena won her first major 4 years ago), while Kim has only become a real top player in the past 2 years.

She only has two Tier 1 events, but both are this year. How many Tier 1 events has Serena won in the past year? What she won in 2001 has no bearing on the current rankings ;)

And Serena did it in style: Beatin Steffi Graf in the finals for your first Tier I as a 16 year old!! Doesn´t get much better than that!

Serena sure was on a hot streak back then. She nearly won three tournaments in a row( including the IW´s/ Lipton double): Paris, IW before losing to Venus in Lipton( the first ( of many!!)all-sister final)
