not named either Venus or Serena.
I dunno who that's gonna be. Possibly Justine or Kim...
Given Venus didn't play any warm-up event leading up to the Open, I daresay she has pre much no chance to win it this year.
I'd be really really happy if she proved me wrong but I seriously doubt she will.
Anywhoo, guess that's a good thing for the sport overrall.... more different faces should do us world of good.

Maybe if she had no warm-up before the French, since it is on her least favorite surface, I will agree, but she as much chance has Kim and Justine if she is healthy and motivated.

For a fan, man you sound too negative, but how do you say it-anyone who has you as a friend does not need an enemy. Go figure..shit head!

why not say "hoping that a Williams doesn't play so that we can
finally have a new champion". Some of you are so stupid that you
almost foreget what you are writting.

Can somebody please tell me when has Venus or Serena ever needed a warmup tournament to win a slam? Lets see.... Wimbledon 2000, wimbledon 2001, wimbledon 2002, AU OPEN 2003, Wimbledon 2003, hmmmmmmmm. Do they really need warmup tournaments? i mean what exactly will they learn from a warmup tournament? All they seem to need is practice and hitting with a coach or partner it seems. Well u cant argue with results.

exactly.
how many times do people have to learn this painful lesson?? venus and serena do not need to play a lot, or play there way into shape, or play singles and doubles and chase after ranking points like pavlovs dog! they can step on the court after three weeks off and dominate.

there might be other reasons that venus might not contend for the title (injury, maybe less of a focus on tennis these days) but for pete's sake, not playing a warmup tourney is NOT one of those reasons. they have taken that out of the equation! have you been paying attention?

 They sure make a certain no.1 look like a fool! Play all year long, leader in the race for both singles and doubles.....but when crunch time arrives who´s winning?! Right, the ones who ain´t playing week after week!

My girls sure know how to frustrate people though. Who can forget how Serena made Kim say:" I need a vacation." like it was T2 all over again, at Miami?!  Or how Amelie had to take FOUR weeks off to recover from the SPANKING she got from Serena at the French?!

Let's just focus on ONE example for Venus....

She retired from the Championships in LA last November because of her foot injury. She didn't play another tournament AT ALL until the Australian Open over two months later. She demolished her half of the draw...including removing Justine in SF as if it was a second round match. She then went on to stretch Serena in three sets in the final before losing it. I think this example itself is enough to say that if venus is properly healed from her injury, she's going to be JUST FINE. Warm-ups are just simple exercises for her. She can comeback and win a grand slam without matchplay.

For Serena...look at last year. Injured her ankle in Sydney, didn't play until Scottsdale and then won her first tournament, taking out Jenn and Martina in the process. Repeated her victorious ways again a few weeks later in Miami.

Let's face it people...these girls rock!!!! :worship: :worship:

exactly i dont think it matters whether venus plays warm ups or not, i think she'll do fine. i cant see anyone else but her winning it.

I really put the good of the sport first then my favorite players. I can't be too happy when the tour is going down no matter what's going on even if my favorite players are dominating cuz at the end of the day "something" has to happen.
I still will root for Venus as much as I can and hope her to win the Open proving me wrong. I just think it ain't too bad even if she loses early or doesn't win it after all. She still has many years ahead and I'm pre sure she will reverse the situation she has against her little sis who's way too busy with her acting career to concentrate enough on tennis.

i personally think its a sad thing for the sport. when it comes to sports you are always looking for the better player/team. when it comes to tennis, it seems we are no-longer looking for that. we are just looking for a win other than the best now a days. it makes no sense. venus and serena have never in my opinion been accepted like in other sports as being the best. right away when they started to win and dominate the first thing that pops up is who is here to dethrone them?

through the years in tennis, there has been someone there to take out the best and become the best. its safe to say no-one has taken out venus or serena. well for venus serena did that. but no-one not named williams has taken out a williams to take the top.

you beat the best to be called the best. i can honestly say i was a big venus fan. and you know, i felt that serena's game could get better. and they would be on equal levels. but i never would've imagined that Serena would get soo good that venus herself had/has to get even better. i've even become more a serena fan than venus. her attitude etc seems to fit me more than venus. i know one thing though. i always want to see the best in competition. and if i was on the tour, i wouldn't be lookin to win a slam b/c of a weak field. you have venus linday and jennifer injury prone. Ameile who knows what can happen. after those four you have the belgians in the mix. that is 6 people out of the top 10 with the bigest chances. and 3 of them w/ injuries. yeah i wouldn't mind playing it and winning it, but still in the back of my mind, i would rather have did it beating the best. having venus to beat then followed by Serena. just think at the confidence level of a player if they were to beat both a healthy venus and serena back to back? you know what that would do for them? and in close drama filled matches? man that would do wonders. no-one out there since 2000 has consistnely beat a williams. when will the time come?

or are we all just going to try and start saying, just take williams out the picture? and see who is gonna win? it doesn't work like that. the best needs to be overtaken by someone better. navy was the best, chrissy took over her. chrissy was the best steffy took over her etc. willies are the best, who is gonna take over them? as in their game? not their points?

that is true about the sisters and warmups. i don't know why it didn't sink in? certain things work for certain people. just like venus and serena didn't need juniors. they i beleive are the only two players on tour to make it to the top spot w/out juniros right? but time and time again venus and serena have shown that warmup tournies don't mean anything.

Yep, ´cause for all the talk about the Belgians...they still have one win combined at a GS stage against the Williamses...( and even that one is tainted.)

I think most of the tennis fans around the world would :hearts: to see someone other than Serena win a GS again ! But with Serena not playing it would help if Venus didn't win this year ! I mean its been 4 long years since we last had a non Williams US Open champion .......

that isn't what the sport is about. the sport is about the best players. again like i said before, i want to see the best players in the slams. hell people werent' runnin they mouths about different winners when navratilova was winning like what 8 straight wimbledons? they wanted to see what her streak could do.

i also think the meer fact that williams keeps winning is a good point. but its two different people here. so you have had 2 different winners since 99. 1 having 3 and the other holding 2. why now b/c you have two black sisters dominating are people expressing their opinions that they are tired of seeing them win everything, when years ago you had a gay person sweeping and winning, and we didn't even dare see this much complaint. and now she is considered a saint of the tennis world next to bille jean etc
