There was talk in another thread about instances where top players are "owned" by players that you wouldn't expect in the head-to-head. So which ones can you think of? Off the top of my head I thought of three such cases, and looked them up:

Mary Pierce vs Paola Suarez

2 Toronto Aug 17 2003 P Suarez - M Pierce-WC 6-4 7-5
2 Auckland Jan 5 2003 P Suarez(5) - M Pierce 4-6 6-4 6-4

2 Hamburg May 4 1997 M Pierce(6) - P Suarez 3-6 7-63 6-3

Angelika Roesch vs Elena Dementieva

1 Berlin May 12 2002 A Roesch-Q - E Dementieva(12) 6-4 1-6 7-5

I think Elena has pretty much ended her curse against Roesch. She trashed her at Wimby.

however their h2h is 3:2 in stevensons favour so she doesn't really own capriati. however 4 of those 5 matches were played in 2002 and stevenson won 3 of those.

Cappy was playing real bad in 2002. The one at the start of the year was probably a true win, but the ones in Linz (the shitest match I have seen Cappy play), and Fillderstadt where terrible with Cappy not playing at all well.

it's not that pierce is owned by suarez..it's just that these matches have been played in the worst moment of pierce's career,so u cant really say that she's owned.i'm sure if these matches were played in 1998/99 pierce would have won easily.
same for lindsay and conchita: conchita leads lindsay 10-6 or stg like this ONLY cos the most of matches have been played in middle 90' when lindsay wasnt still the champ she's now.

I'm sure this has been spoken of on the thread before but is anyone as perplexed as I am with Dechy's dominance over Shaughnessy? I would've thought they'd be somewhere close to equal footing but it seems Shaughnessy has major problems dealing with Dechy - though I'm sure most of the problem at this point is a mental obstacle.

There are always factors, I'm not denying that. But Suarez owns the head-to-head - I'm not saying she is the better player. If she was the better player then the head-to-head wouldn't be interesting, would it?

But then again, Stevenson hardly plays great against anyone. Actually Capriati is the only player worth mentioning that she has beaten.

I *think* the point of this thread was top players being owned by lower ranked players, not top players owning average players.

I already figured it had to be against Tauziat, as this set record of 42-0 is rather infamous

BTW Nathalie's h2h with Monica wasn't that much better : 21-1 set record, with that lost set coming during their last encounter back in 2000.

Two of the most lopsided head to head records involve Martina Hingis.

Her record against Seles 16-5 (counting Hopman Cup) is quite amazing.

Her record against Sanchez-Vacario, 18-2, is equally surprising, since that record goes back to 1994, when ASV was always a top five player.

Some other Hingis domination of lower ranked, but still top ten players, includings:

Hingis vs Sandrine Testud 16-0.

Hingis vs Barbara Schett 10-0

Hingis vs Nathalie Tauziat 7-0.

What to think of Monica's record against Conchita?

It stands at 20-1 in Monica's favour, and most of those victories did come when Conchita was a solid top 5 player :worship:

I have always been amazed that Davenport did so badly against Serena. I think sometimes one player just has another player's number and there seems little the losing player can do about it.

That match-up was a nightmare for Lindsay. Serena´s every bit the player Lindsay is x3! Lindsay´s good serve?! Serena´s better. Lindsay´s a good return?! Serena´s better. Lindsay´s an agressive player?! Serena IS agression! Combine that with better athletiscism and movement....and things don´t look that good for Lindsay.

Too bad, huh?! That´s life my friend...some player are just better than others. Nothing you and me can do about it.

And you never should either! Kim´s time will come....Serena and Venus won´t be there forever. she will win her one or two slams.

I have always been amazed that Davenport did so badly against Serena. I think sometimes one player just has another player's number and there seems little the losing player can do about it.

I never understand that either .........I guess its mental these days for Lindsay against either of those W/S .

it´s not even mental anymore. It´s just that the sisters have taken Lindsay´s own game over from here and now they do it better than she does.

Yes, but now that Justine has a GS all that changes. They have only played once this year and that was ages ago after Justine had played a marathon against Davenport through cramp and blisters in the heat of Oz. She was pooped then! I would love to see them meet again cos Justine would definitely kick her butt!! Allez!

My point is anyone looking at their history of matches sees all the sets she has won, and sees a player who is poised to break through. Given that Venus hasn't played a match since the Wimbledon Final, and Justine has gone on her recent hardcourt tear, if they meet at the U.S. Open, it very well could be Justine's day. Careers change on such matches. There was a time when Chris Evert owned Martina Navratilova too.

What makes you think that because Justine has a GS now that it changes? Not buying it. If she was so affected by her match with Davenport, she sure had no problems clocking Ruano Pascual (who was playing very well) in the Quarters. Be careful what you wish for, you just may get it and it bites you in the azz.

Sets dont win you matches folks. We all know how many sets Jennfier Caps has won off of Serena but yet NO WINS in the last 8 tries. Justine beating a seriously watered down field in Toronto and one good win over Kim in San Diego does not make her the new hardcourt punisher. If Justine wins, thats great good for her, but dont come in here an assume that because Venus has been going through some injury problems and hasnt played in a while that that means that Justine is just gonna kick her ass all over the court without dropping games.

Yep, ask Jen indeed how little those sets won mean when you´ve lost!

Justine´s good, but still LIGHT YEARS away from Venus on hardcourts. Venus is just the type of player who annoys Juju....Venus doesn´t want to go for kill right awat like Serena, she lets YOU make the games and I think Justine hates to do that, ´cause she wants to let the other player make the game and so she can capatilize on the errors. Plus she doesn´t have the edge in backhand because Venus likes the backhand too and can hit from anywhere and anyplace. Ask Hingis!

LOL pretty sad when you're a top player and your best chance to beat Venus Williams is when she's injured and hasn't played a match in almost two months...I don't see elfin majick beating Venus at the US Open 1-7. Venus is in justine's head like no other player, including Kim and Serena.

hingis-seles....we could always post the GRAF-v- Hingis h2h if that makes you feel better about Stffi's h2h w/Monica.

That´s the key word Forehand. Venus is in Justine´s head! since Amelia Island Venus is in Justine´s head. No big talk will help her against Venus, ´cause she knows that Venus ain´t scared of her. Venus knows that she just has to look at Justine and it´s Amelie Island all over again.

Venus handles junk much better than Serena, much better and she's a much better wind player.

Benesova was giving Serena fits in thier fed cup match w/her slices and spins to Serena's backhand, had her scratching her head. Venus played her the next day and handled her.

Venus may be on pace to play more hc matches, but she'll need a lot more wins to match Steffi's win percentage.

Yes, but now that Justine has a GS all that changes. They have only played once this year and that was ages ago after Justine had played a marathon against Davenport through cramp and blisters in the heat of Oz. She was pooped then! I would love to see them meet again cos Justine would definitely kick her butt!! Allez!

you really are good at coming up with excuses.

Serena got a betta return than Lindsay??? CRAZY
Lindsay has one of the top returns of serve, right up there with Caps and Monica
