Agassi, Clijsters get No. 1 seedings for Open

.c The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) - Andre Agassi and Kim Clijsters were seeded No. 1 Monday for the U.S. Open.

Agassi counts the 1994 and 1999 Opens among his eight major titles, while Clijsters is seeking her first Grand Slam victory. They top the current rankings.

Clijsters and French Open winner Justine Henin-Hardenne make Belgium the first country other than the United States to have women seeded Nos. 1 and 2 at the Open.

It's also the first time since 1994 that an American woman wasn't seeded in the top two.

The 1998 Open champion, Lindsay Davenport, is No. 3, followed by 2000-01 champion Venus Williams, Amelie Mauresmo and Jennifer Capriati.

After Agassi - at 33, the oldest man ever ranked No. 1 - Wimbledon champion Roger Federer is seeded second, with French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero third, and Andy Roddick fourth.

Neither defending champion is entered for the first time since 1971 (Margaret Smith Court, Ken Rosewall). Pete Sampras hasn't played at all since beating Agassi in last year's final, while Williams' younger sister Serena is out after left knee surgery.

The draw for the U.S. Open is Wednesday, and play starts Aug. 25.

These are the real seeds. What you saw last month were the probable players for the US Open. I had a feeling they would be announced today, but I thought they would have been announced this morning.

Why does the article point out that an American isn't seeded as high this year? People on this board and in tennis don't root for nationalities. They root for the underdogs. That's why people root against Venus and Serena, right? That's what everybody here seems to say.

venus should of gotten #2 considering she got to the finals last year, but it does not matter anyways. Venus does not care what the seeds are.

Go Venus! Show them all!!!!!!!

Since Alexandra Stevenson had to withdraw from the Pilot Pen tournament today (right shoulder) and Amelie Mauresmo's health a question, you could possiblly have two more people move up and be seeded.

18. Patty Snyder (Sui)

Brian made a Freudian slip here! :p As Hofmann is liable to Panic and Pull Peppermint Patty out of the Party, maybe Tara Snyder will get the #18 seed after all!

I didn't type the list (or have time to proofread it). I just C&P'ed it from a news source. :)
