Actually, MonicAnna has a point. I didn't REALLY need to take dig at Anna. It was just convenient. selesrules is like fighter who carries his hands low. Taking his head off is so easy you get tempted to get artsy about it. I'm not deleting the post, but MonicAnna has a right to take a shot at me in return. Fair's fair.

Oh please!

Why do we get threads like this,

Because it's the truth. Everything I said about Anna is the truth.

and WHY DO PEOPLE REPLY TO THEM!!! :fiery:

Because the truth hurts. They know that their players are not worth Anna's left toe so they choose to deny the facts.

And so sadsack selesrules meets his final humiliation: the Anna diehards totally can't stand him, and he can't even generate the intended negative comments about Anna. Poor child!

Very true! The funniest thing about these attacks on AnnaK, regarding her not winning a single title, is that nobody outside tennis really cares and everyone still worships Anna. And they probably never heard and don't wanna hear of Serena Williams, for example. You can compare Anna's contribution to the sport and that of the 6?times grand slam champion, and Anna is clearly the WTA's favourite. It's no wonder there is an army of Russians approaching the top10 and that there's more and more interest in the sport: Anna Kournikova arrived and conquered!

Oh, nobody outside of tennis cares about Anna not winning a title? That's funny. That is all you hear from them (besides the innane "she's hot") They take delight in mentioning that she's never won a title and that she "sucks at tennis". That isn't true obviously. Injuries and bad decisions probably cost her a number of wins but nothing can change that. If it ends like this she will forever be the punchline of everyone's jokes.

And I think you are giving Anna too much credit for Russian tennis players.

True. Look @ the ages of that "Russian Army approaching the Top 10" and you'll see that most started playing seriously B4 Anna became a "pop icon" about 5 years ago. Surely many here know that even in Soviet times, they and the other republics of the USSR (and allies like East Germany) put great effort into producing successful athletes. Then Boris Yeltsin as Pres. in the 90's increased the financial investment in tennis, esp. womens (inc. private $). So while more girls are surely playing the game in Russia now because of Anna, they may be "the next wave", who will be "name players" later this decade. BTW, Serena gets a great deal of press mention besides the sports pages and black media like Jet. I've seen her atop the front page of USA Today several times, for example.

That shit is HILARIOUS...I laughed so hard that my stomach muscles hurt :D

Speaking of my dear Anna, I saw her yesterday...she was very cute...
She had on a tiny tan clored mini, with a wifebeater and her pink bra straps showing...one of the most coveted Louis Vuitton bags of the year and beautiful shoes...all of the men were gawking...

No matter what people say, she does have presence...even her practice clothes, you has that something about her...its not that she is drop dead beautiful, but she has PRESENCE...

She walked into the office breathing heavy and then signed and said, in perfect american english accent...and fanning her self...ohhhhhhhhh its so HOT...it was a sight to be seen

Love my girl though...

Great post. People do care that Anna hasn't won a title. It is constantly mentioned everywhere she goes and in every interview she chooses to give. Even E! mentioned her lack of tournament titles in their biography on her. Anna's a tennis player and her results will always be what she is measured by. Yes, she is a beautiful woman, but she and the rest of the world look at her as an athlete. As such, she is going to be compared to other tennis players and their achievements.

Is Anna a great asset to the WTA? Yes and no. Yes, because her superstardom guarantees there will be great interest whenever and whereever she plays. No, because her results have gone downhill so dramatically in the last two years (in part due to injury and in part due to Enrique being a constant distraction). I often get the impression that people go to her matches either to gawk at her or to make fun of her whether she wins or loses. To me, it is sad and a waste of her talent.

As for people not wanting to hear about Serena Williams, are you joking about that? I certainly hope so. Either that or you have blinders on. Serena is everywhere. She has been featured in Vogue and Sports Illustrated. She is getting bit parts in movies and television. Last year, she and her sister were on the cover of Time. In addition, Serena is the player that every other player is measured by and the one everyone wants to beat. To say that no one cares about Serena is a joke.

Don't blame Enrique. Anna is 22. Married and divorced.
And just the thought that Enrique has to call her 10 times a day to tell Anna how beautiful she is.
And Enrique has to buy Anna millions of dollars of junk to keep her happy.
And Enrique has to let Anna dance and distract him during concerts. Which infuriate his fans.

I love it!!

You may love it, GL. But "it" helps explain why Anna's tennis career is a mess. :( Most top players play the first few years of their career without having a serious boyfriend. But not Anna. She had to be different. But I don't remember Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Gabriela Sabatini, Aranta Sanchez-Vicario and Pam Shriver having boyfriends the first few years of their respective carrers. And it showed in their oustanding play.

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, I must ask why you love this? Are you only in love with Anna's celebrity? Does her tennis not matter to you? When you look at Anna's results since she took up with Iglesias, she played three good weeks of tennis (Stanford, San Diego and Shanghai 2002). That's it.

No, Enrique should not be blamed, but I have to wonder whether or not he has been a big distraction.

As for the rest, being married and divorced at 22 is not something to be proud of. It's really sad and has to have affected her. And if Anna needs that much attention, then she has some issues to deal with.

All in all, I feel that Anna has gotten off track that somehow tennis has not become the priority it once was in her life. I'm probably wrong on that and I hope that I am. However, that is the impression I get. I'm sure the injuries don't help, but having a rock star boyfriend has been awful for her career.

I mean I love to read Enrique's message board after an Anna sighting.
I don't know what's going on in their lives.
They might be married. They might just have a business deal together.
It's none of my business.

What I meant was - as long as people(outside sports) have a Kournikova or a Sharapova playing around with a little yellow ball, they'll be radiant because all they really care about is if these players look good. That's enough for them. There's no question Anna is a lot more famous than Serena. These people don't buy Sports Illustrated and even if they did... If Anna wanted she would instantly become a movie star, she would just say yes and the right people would grab her and make billions because of Anna. Serena is given the roles of a tennis player... Why? Because she's only famous in the tennis world and she will always be seen as a tennis player. Anna Kournikova is more of a celebrity and less of a tennis player, compared to Serena(less of a celebrity and more of a tennis player).

And someone said that Anna's recognition didn't help other russians because they are the same age. That's not true: Myskina has said that watching Anna's breakthrough gave her the drive to become a pro, and that all girls in Russia(including tennis wannabees) around 97-98 wanted to become Anna. Do you have any doubts that sponsors helped the players now entering the top 30/40/50, because they thought there could be another Anna on the way? Without Anna=sponsors they probably wouldn't have got where they are. The Russian government doesn't support its players that much. Why do you think the AER are being reconsidered? It's because Sharapova is believed to be the next Russian with Anna's impact in what concerns gowing interest in the sport.

Serena holds the trophies, but Anna holds the WTA

It's not the "having a serious boyfriend" thing in itself, as Juju has "gone a step further" and her game has improved. It's not even the other person being famous, as the Jimmy Connors fling supposedly neither helped nor hurt Chrissie's game back when. It's the fact that they both are addicted to fame, creating a perpetual media feeding frenzy. Now Enrique may "compete" on the charts, but a show is choreographed, a tennis match isn't. So I'd say it's more the nature of the relationship that keeps Anna from focusing on tennis, regardless of how many practice hours she logs.

I can see we are going to disagree on this issue. Serena is as big of a celebrity as Anna. I'm sorry that you don't see that, but she is. Serena was featured as a model in this year's Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, an issue traditionally picked up by non-sport fans, she was featured in Vogue, also a magazine traditionally picked up by non-sport fans and she appeared as a kindergarten teacher in My Wife and Kids and a princess in Black Knight with Martin Lawrence and she will also appear in the Wimbledon movie. She and Venus appeared on Oprah this year and last year they were the cover story on Time. You keep saying that no one knows Serena outside of tennis, but anyone who follows the sport and the media knows that is not true. Hell, I live in football country and everyone here knows Venus and Serena.

As for Anna becoming a movie star overnight, that is highly unlikely. To become a true movie star takes years of work. Just having a pretty face is no guarantee of becoming a movie star nor is it any guarantee that anyone will want to see your film. Just ask Angelina Jolie. TR2 was a total flop. Ask any number of young women in Hollywood trying to make it. I would prefer to see Anna stick to tennis. That is where her talent lies.

Anna doesn't hold the WTA. No one player is bigger than the WTA. The sport may have its problems, but it does go on with or without any one player. I'm not saying that Anna doesn't have an impact, but when she is not playing the sport does not fall apart.

Anna did have an impact on Russian tennis, but did it ever occur to you that perhaps the governments, particularly Boris Yeltsin's support of the sport helped make it grow? Not every Russian player came to America to train like Anna did. Many of them stayed in their own home country.

Don't get me wrong. Anna does deserve credit for the attention she has brought to the sport, but I think you are giving her far more credit than she deserves.

I've said it before and i'll say it again - Kournikova without her tennis is B-Grade pop celebrity material, a big YAWN that gets very limited attention from people who's time has any value. She's not "A-list" movie star material by a long way. She's becoming a phantom of the athlete and the person she once was.

On the thursday Best Damn Sports Show Period, Chris Rose asked Luke Jensen about Anna : "How much will the sport miss her?"
Luke : "If she quits, how much will you talk about tennis?"
Chris Rose : " That would be, none."
Then Luke said Anna was " someone who energizes our sport, not Agassi or Roddick ..."
And Luke went on to talk about Anna's best results and how she "transcends" and all that.
So Luke Jensen agrees with selesrules.

Anna is the icon for:" looks donīt win you titles." Look at Justine, she is NOWHERE near Anna in the looks department, but she has achieved more than Anna will ever achieve.

Sadly it seems that in the U.S. looks are more important than your actual game. Can you believe that Justine didnīt play on center court at the open till the semiīs?!
