View Full Version : Should We Look Too Much Into This Regarding Venus' Participation In The USO?

I was alerted to this on another message board and the person seems to believe that Venus will not play in this year's USO. This was found in the Women's Draw section of the USO website:

We will have a new Champion at the 2003 US Open. Many think Kim Clijsters or Justine Henin-Hardenne are the favorites, but you know Jennifer Capriati, Amelie Mauresmo and Lindsay Davenport will be heard from. What will the roads to glory look like for these superstars? What challengers will stand in their way?

Why would they not mention Venus. Is it becasue she isn't playing or is it because she isn't considered a favorite (this doesn't make sense since they previoulsy mentioned that she was a favorite)?

Let's hope it's just an error...

But I must admit I have a bad feeling about this. Hope I'm wrong.

It may say more about what they fear than what they know.

It's a small shred of hope, but I'm clingin' to it.

The other thing that is strange is that late last week her agent said that she intends on playing. If she wasn't going to play, he would have said, we have no comment at this time or we will have a comment in the future. Another indicator as to whether she will play is when they announce the seeds and I thought that would be today, but I think it will be tomorrow. If she isn't playing and is withdrawing, then one would think an announcement would be made sometime today. Now to be fair to the website, I don't know when the paragraph that appeared in the women's draw was posted. It could have been posted when the site was updated and/or before the site wrote an article previewing the women contenders.

I hope she is healthy. I was confident that she would play until I saw that paragraph in the women's draw section of the USO website. Like I said, hopefuuly this this is much of nothing.

Venus will play if she is healthy. If her agent says "intends to play", that still gives her an out - if she feels that physically she can't play. I really hope she can play.

I pray to God everyday for Venus' health. When she's healthy, her return to tennis will be successful. Hopefully that's at the Open

I don't think there is any reason to think Venus won't show up. Venus doesn't like to be absent at the Grand Slams. She maybe shouldn't have played the French, but the slams are so important to her that she wanted to have a chance.

Well at the US Open site Venus is listed along with Kim and Justine as one of The Frontrunners as they put it..so they seem to think she'll show up.

I think I might have been looking to much into this because the seeds were annunced late this afternoon and Venus, as expected, was seeded number four. It doesn't mean she won't withdraw, but I expect the seeds were announced late because they wanted to make sure she was going to play. Many people may not believe it, but the WTA and the USTA really want her to play.
