GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!

the draws are ok i guess.

if patty doesn't turn up i doubt she'll win, because from memory bielik serves and volleys or at least has a big serve so patty has to at least play to 30% of her ability (that no offense to bielik, it's just that's the level that she usually plays at. she has so much ability).

MGM has been playing much since a good showing in san diego (was it). weingartner is streaking, so who knows? it really depends which players rock up

manu has lost so many times to dokic, but it could happen that jelena has a lot some more confidence from that drubbing davenport gave her. i'd still think it's an uphill battle for manu, but as with all the swiss girl it depends on whether indian wells semi-finalist manu can re-surface.

i think daniilidou is a great draw for myri. you have to say that besides perhaps stevenson there isn't a seed is much worse form. myriam played great in new haven. i wouldn't be surprised if this a routine victory for myriam, although again you can never pick daniilidou either

Lindsayfan

basing on actual players's form,i think myriam has lots of chances to beat danilidou.patty and MGM shouldnt have problems vs their opponents.
manu will have the hardest job...dokic isnt the the same player of 2 years ago,but she's still tough for manu.i predict a 3/1 w-l after first round.

patty is - as always - a big question mark. i don't know anything about bea bielik, and certainly have never seen her play, so i can't make any predicitons.

MGM hasn't been playing for some weeks (was that a typo, switz?), in her last match she retired against petrova, so i have no idea where she stands (still the rib stress fracture bothering her?). theoretically she should come through. it's also quite important thas she's seeded at a grand slam for the first time in her career, so let's hope this makes a difference.

manu will lose, anything else would be a shock. of course dokic's confidence is down, but probably not against a player like emanuelle.

i agree with you and vale (lindsayfan): myriam has been playing really well this week, so this is possibly an upset in the making.

well, there might be 4 swiss players in the top 100, but there's a huuuuge gap after that, the highest-ranked player of the rest being timea bacsinszky at 656... :o

Darn Beat you bet me to making the Cheering Thread  :fiery: :wavey: :p

ohh well I geuss better late then Never...

ok, moi perceptions...

First we have our lovley Patty Schnyder up against a supposed up and comer Bea Beliek. As Switz said, if Patty is playing a limited amount of her game, or is showing some heat theres no reason why she can't beat Bea. I havn't seen Bea play before, I think the last time I heard her name was at last years US OPEN  All I know is that she has a very fast serve. Patty usually plays well on hard courts, and has had some good preformances here at Flushing Meadows. If Patty wants to past this round, concentration is the key and just go out and play her best, Bea is still in-experienced, and Patty usually starts GrandSlams well (from what I saw at Aussie and Roland Garros)
Im thinking Pattys going to scrape through, but this probably won't be a cakewalk, maybe a close 2 setter, or 3 setter? who knows.

Next we have Marie Gianeh and Marlene Weingartner. Marlene this year has been something of a bundle of inconsistencies, has had some good results that have proved that shes the player she was to be expected, and then some matches where they have been a bit strange, to say the least. Marie has had some good results this year, and thoughout it has played consistently and capable of her ranking. If Marie keeps her game on and her serve is in 5th gear then It's going to be Marie over-powering Marlene this round. If Marlene is playing her "good" game, I still see Marie winning. I say a definite second round for Marie

Next we have one of my faves, Emmanuelle Gagliardi again playing Jelena Dokic. From what Wimbledon had previewed, even with Jelena on the rocky seas shes still capable of beating Emmanuelle. As Beat said hopefully the anhilalation she recieved from Lindsay was enough to rattle her cage abit. If Emmanuelle wants to have any-chance of going through, It's a case of been consistent and playing well (something which usually comes every second day for Emmanuelle) Its possible that Emmanuelle can win, but not her best First Round Match up.

Well Myriam and Eleini, Apart from her win in Auckland, Eleni hasn't really proved much to me this year. though she hasn't had the chance as of the injuries. Myriam in the last few weeks as ignited a little spark in her game, and has powerfully beaten Silvia and Laura Granville, both players ranked higher then what Myriam has, showing that Myriam has the game and the ability to compete. I reckon big prospects for Myriam, and facing Eleni is a good chance to show what she is capable of.

Well its a bit like a lolly scramble for the Swiss. Patty and Marie are capable enough to get to the second round. Emmanuelle has to play a very good game, and Myriam also have a theoretical chance of getting through the next round, though she will need to work at Eleni.

Did any one else see Patty play? Sky had 5 choices of match so I tuned straight to Patty.

Interesting match. Patty gave a tennis lesson, cruised a bit, let bielik back in a bit by playing for the error (but it worked strategically so perhaps it wasn't a wrong idea), looked rusty in places and looked like she belonged well up the top 10 in others. Serve worked well except once when Bielik worked it out and intercepted it at a crazy angle, there was a OMG look from Bielik at one Patty lob and Patty looked good when she attacked and on the key points.

Bielik is kinda like "I wanted 2B Lindsay Davenport, but maybe I'll be Mirjana Lucic instead" so it's a good start for Peppermint Patty, but not more than that.

i saw manu's match:dokic made the game, she hit winners and unforced errors.in first set, dokic's game was poor and there were lots of breaks.but i never had the impression that manu could win first set cos jelena was doing everything by herself, great shots and stupid errors.in second set jelena played a bit better and was able to control the match and finish it.

switz
Aug 27th, 2003, 11:36 AM
patty and marie have the tough matches in this round.

Fabiola is a great player and myriam is really going to have to over power her to get past her because she'll get balls back. if myriam plays her game she'll get through comfortably though i would think

patty lost to tanasugarn the last time they played (canberra 02), but patty was in bad form then and she played in her first round match so things look positive (+ patty has won their other two matches). of course tanasugarn is a good hard-court player and most people seem to be picking her to win. i think patty is really going to dictate the outcome of this match. if she's on i think she'll get through in straight sets, if not tanasugarn will win it pretty easily.

MGM is obviously playing well and should really have few problems with obata. i would like to see her get through, because an in form MGM could test henin on a hard-court.

Uh, Beat, if one didn't have a break ball, it means one didn't GET to either (X)-40 or ad, right? Don't sugar-coat things, this proves (on top of her 1-3 record in matches since the 4th round loss @ RG, inc. a 1-2 record on clay, inc. 1-1 on clay vs. Talaja, that the coachless bit is CRAZY)!

Beat, it wasn't personal. You can't compare the Schnyder Saga to a regular case of a player losing, esp. as Myriam is only 18 and has the thyroid problem. Re. Patty being coachless, there are more fingers being pointed (in and out of Suisse courtrooms) than Steffi has Slam trophies.
