View Full Version : Some quotes from Justine from an interview with a newspaper

"I've known my coach Carlos Rodriguez since I was 13, and yet I was shocked with his harsh analysis after Wimbledon. In the future, he never again wanted to see a repeat of that semifinal against Serena Willams. He was right."

"Winning in San Diego, without my coach, is one of the most important steps in my career. It proved that I had learned from Carlos's analysis. In the past, I wasn't able to change my strategy during a match. Now, I (by myself) knew how to found an answer to Kim Clijsters."

"You are looking at a new Henin. One example : for a long time I couldn't cope with the competition of Kim Clijsters. Playing against her suffocated me but now I don't have any troubles anymore when I play her."

"Clijsters's 1st place on the rankings doesn't do anything to me. I focus only on myself."

"I know some players don't like me. That's because I choose my own way. Many try to outplay me with power but I answer with intelligence."

That's good that she's able to win a tough match w/out coaching from the stands.

""I know some players don't like me. That's because I choose my own way. Many try to outplay me with power but I answer with intelligence."

Oh really? Well she's come up w/seven incorrect answers in a row to Venus Williams. What's so intelligent about running all over the court sqaush shotting balls back over the net.

Is it the same arrogance as saying that you were 9000 notches below your level when you were beaten? Or saying that you weren't beaten but that you beat yourself? Or saying that you can go undefeated this season?

SJW

"my aim is to go undefeated this year" is not the same as "i can go undefeated this year". got it?

Josh, re-read my message, especially the "right now" part. Currently, Serena is out of the tour, and Justine is doing a great job outdoing Serena in the arrogance department. Oh, how I would love it when someone spank Justine's a** at the USO!

This had me rolling on the floor:worship:. The Venus-Justine rivalry is too one sided to be called a rivalry. I dunno why, but I agree that Justine doesn't play 'intelligent' tennis against Venus. The last match I saw of them, she tried to out hit and out retrieve Venus . Get over the mental block Justine, you ain't gonna beat Venus (or Serena or Kim etc.) at her own game. I hope she brings a sturdier head to their next match.

Nice of all the ignorant Williams fans to come in and stomp all over Justine for having self-confidence. Weren't you the people that wanted to have the competition believe they can beat Serena, and step up to the plate? Well how the fuck is admitting a match is never "on your racket" stepping up to the plate? Justine *should* be trying to convince herself she can influence her matches against Serena, otherwise she'll never win.

Well if you look at the last match against Kim, it's what she has done after a bad start, she hits the ball longer and with more spins and hits some great angles while in the beginning of the match, she was hitting too flat and short.
And Carlos will not forget to remember this to her at the usopen.
I watch an interview of him yesterday in "Week-end sportif" and said he was disappointed by the way Justine played in Toronto, playing too much in the centre and not moving her opponent.

Justine lost to Venus last time at the AO. Since Charleston and even more since FO she's a different player. Much stronger mentally and her game is getting better and better. It won't take long before she beats Venus :)

I take it that second quote loses something in the translation.

Still Justine does make me laugh sometimes .

As long as she doesn't let that confidence turn into complacency I guess it's the right attitude for someone like her.

No on can really argue with her results so she's obviously doing something right.

Help! I can't keep up: I thought it was decided some time ago that, this being a new millennium and everything, we were all to embrace arrogance. Then for a while there, I thought we were to still embrace it, but call it something else like "self belief" "extreme confidence" or just "having a high self-esteem day." In any case, I understood that humility was to be banished. Now there seems to be a backlash against arrogance. Are we to drop our appreciation of it now? Does it depend on who the player is that's putting it out there for us to consume?

Someone's gotta let me know how to feel (and I know I've come to just the right place). Thanks.

you got it wrong.. you have to know the whole situation before you can understand it. Carlos has been her coach for ages, she trusts him completely and they have become great friends. He's like a dad to her. His presence in a match, nodding with his head, just a small sign gives her the feeling that she's doing everything ok (or not). It's not exactly coaching, it's something all coaches do: supporting their player. It gives players confidence if their coach is there.
Justine has always been very dependent on her coach..she used to look at him all the time during matches. Now she had to play without him, and she learned that she can do without him. She knows how to get her confidence and how to change matches.

hope this is a lil clear :o

Excuse me, taking an injury timeout is hardly anything new, unless of course she is indirectly saying that the injury time-out she took was pure tactics and not because she was actually hurt.

funny how people take beautiful, honest answers from Justine and try to make us believe that she is arrogant or that there is something wrong with what she is saying. I found really moving that the pressure of playing Clijsters was suffocating her but now that she is beating Clijsters it is Clijsters who lashes out and accuses her of gamesmanship and says "fucking shit" during matches. tsk, tsk, tsk Kimmie ;)

Carlos is really tough on her but I think it is ok. He really loves Justine and only wants the best for her. :D

if you saw the match then you should know Justine started to play better after 4-0 in the first set. The injury time-out is just a poor excuse. Justine started to play better in the second and Kim made the errors, too bad for her.

It's funny because each time I hear her speaking french I'm always impressed with what she has to say and the way she says it.

When I read quotes in english it's like her IQ dropped by 40, surely that has to be wrongly translated quotes or it's just that she has problems expressing herself in english.

that' s true! French-speaking journalists( belgian, french, swiss ) have ALWAYS praised her intelligence and maturity OFF the court. It has been this way since she started to score some great results back in 2001. Another thing most of them ( french-speaking journalists ) use to say about her is how she's modest and down to earth, while every single american article about justine these days ends up saying how she's arrogant and stuff.
Jutine's english causes her damages.

People seem to accept the most arrogant of statements from Justine and brush them off as "honest", "confidence", etc., and yet those same statements if made by Serena or Venus would be the "height of arrogance".
