Billie Jean King always says she "goes by the rankings" in terms of selecting her players. Right now she is the #3 ranked US doubs player, behind Lisa Raymond and Lindsay Davenport. With Lindsay Davenport pissed at BJK and odds are sitting for the semis and finals if the US makes it due to bad blood and a bad toe, will Martina Navratilova, at the ripe old age of 47, fill in for Lindsay and play some doubles for the US?

Good question. Billie Jean King is desperate to win the Fed Cup title this year. So why not use Martina Navratilova? She and Lisa Raymond would be an unbeatable doubles team! :bounce: Or would Billie Jean dust off Pam Shriver, too, and have Pam team up with Martina for old times sake? ;)

It's a good point. I think she should be picked. If you can't have Williams & Williams or Davenport & Raymond then Navratilova is as good as anyone for a doubles slot.

I mean she's got 2 grand slam mixed titles this year alone. She has three WTA doubles titles with Kuznetsova including tier 1 Roma and is playing the Toronto tier 1 final today. She also has a title this season with Huber and a runner up finish in another event with Molik. I don't see any other US doubles players matching those stats this year if you're looking past the two top regualr pairings.

Will the doubles really matter?

If the US team shows up without the sisters, the Belgians seems the favourite to take 3 singles matches, leaving the doubles as unimportant

i want the belgians to win bad! but it's really nice if venus and serena showed up and we have the battle of best of the best in fed cup!! when was the last time that the top 4 players came from 2 different countries and they play in fed/federation cup?

I'd really like to see us organise it and have as many big names coming over as possible, but the in the fact that the US didn't even send in an application to organise it, somethings says me they haven't been able to get any commitment from the sisters, and without them, the US' chances of winning are greatly reduced.

It's doubtful that Martina would be picked. I think Lisa will once again fill the role of doubles player and top singles reserve. Don't be surprised if the US fields much the same team for the semis as for the quarters.

I think we can probably rule out Serena, who may not be back to full strength by then. And if Lindsay hasn't had her surgery before the year-end Championships, she'll want to have it as soon as possible thereafter, so she can recover for Oz.

Monica probably won't be able to play, although if she's back on court by then, and King asks her, she will try. I think we can rule out Jen because of the clash between her and BJ.

That leaves two physical question marks as our lead players; Venus and Chanda. Both should be healthy well before Fed Cup, but will they be up for playing an extra week?

If only one of those two can play, I'd assume Meg would be the #2 singles player, in which case we'd need a strong backup. (Although Lisa's a good singles reserve, clay is her worst surface.)

If neither of them (V or C) can play, then it won't matter if we pick Martina, 'cause we're boned anyway. :)

I think the only way Martina is picked is if BJ had 2 of her "big 6" (Serena, Venus, Lindsay, Jen, Chanda, Monica) on board in complete health.
