View Full Version : signing autographs after a match

It's interesting how players act after a match.

By my experience, in practice sessions they normally do sign autographs.

After a match, the winner normally signs all autographs the fans want, in Toronto, most players did with one exception: Vera Zvonareva after her match against Barbara Schett refused to sign any.

Some players don't sign after a loss, which is understandable, that I saw: Kim Clijsters, Amanda Coetzer.

but I think it's very nice from some players that sign autographs after they lost: Barbara Schett, Mary Pierce and Jelena Dokic (yes, you read it right, Jelena signed a lot of autographs after she lost to Vera).

Kim signed an auto after she lost....i remember cos i was like "only kim would do that"

my experiences....

the Williams after practice do their best to sign all
Justine did the same BEFORE practice
Jennifer promised me after practice but then i had to go :p
Jelena is really nice...you ask her and she'll sign
same with Daniela
Alyona: you have to catch her at the right time or she has to like you  but shes real cool when shes in a good mood

and the lower ranked players in general are more down to earth so appreciate their fans (Alicia Molik was so nice to me, and Nadia Petrova signed for everyone who asked when she was dripping with sweat after a match)

Well when the whole crowd is booing Vera's close calls and shit, I wouldn't sign autographs either.

yes she did because me and my friends started having a discussion about sportsmanship because of it:confused:

Some players are pretty focused, and win or lose they just want to get off. Vera is very shy BTW.

But I remember at BMH Shino just wanted to get off court after beating Bovina, and as the week went on she became more friendly.

maybe she did at the court, but I was outside the court, where people line-up precisely for that and although some kids asked her she just walked straight to the exit.

actually, I don't know what's in their heads at that moment, they might be not feeling too well because of the heat and just want to get to the locker room, and as I said I absolutely understand when they don't do it after a loss.

I wanted more to emphasize how some players sign after a loss, it's more to praise Babsi, Jelena and Mary.

I also like players who take their time to sign. Like Monica, Anna and babsi. They try to sign everyone who wants one before the press packers drive them off.

Monica is indeed very nice to her fans, I saw her in 1999 in Toronto after she lost the final to Martina Hingis and she stayed outside the court for a long time signing autographs.

Babsi will sign as many as people want.

I don't know about Anna, I only saw her in Montreal last year and didn't look for her when she finished because half of the population of the world was waiting for her autograph.

i think every player should sign autographs
no matter how the score was
because without the fans they wouldn´t earn all this money. and just because of the huge ammount of fans they get contracts with companies, so i think it is part of her "job"

i hear monica's really good, but ive only seen her play live once (i know, what kind of fan am i???) and i didn't even think to run down and get one.

anyway-- for the us open, what would you say is the best mode for a top player's atuograph? im not all that concerned, but i'm going to the usopen for only the second time and i've never gotten one before.

thanks in advance for anyone who takes the time to explain this to me... :)

Aug 16th, 2003, 11:30 PM
Yeah I think the Players should sign. I mean to them its nothing but for the little kid who has waited all day may be to get the autograph it could be something they never forget.
But I also think there is a time and a place like say if Venus and Serena where out eating in a restrant or if they where out shopping I would not let my kids go up and bother them. As that is there private time away from work and the public. Or at least it should be

I haven't been to the US Open but I can tell you it all depends on how the courts and especially the practice courts are layout, the popularity of the player and what moment you choose.

Normally, if it's a top player, the best time is during practices, they are relaxed and normally there aren't too many people around (but with some even then is difficult eg Anna).

After a match, in some tournaments you can get near the exit but again, if it's a top player you will have to leave very quickly, probably before the match finishes (I wouldn't do that) to get a front row spot.

then is up to the players, some sign everything, some sign a few, some sign none.

Aug 16th, 2003, 11:35 PM
i don't know if they would mind that as long as you weren't interrupting their conversation. they would probably rather sign an autograph or two than have people following them or watching them all day.... but i can see what you mean, there's a grey area...

so i guess what i need to know is if a player's practice session gets posted somewhere... i mean, how would i find that out?

my sister got an autograph....she would not stop talking about it (from Mary Pierce)

Elena D. only did a few
Petrova was wonderful (although she did not hand out her towels for 'bad luck)
Hantuchova only did a few (despite a million people watcher her boring doubles match just for an autography :))

Amelie is wonderful too...so it Elena Lehotseva (eeww spelling :))

In Montreal they have lists on every court.

In Toronto only God knows

so it depends on the tournament

Most players will sign, some will chat. The only players to deny me an autograph are:
Nathalie Dechy
Janet Lee
Wynne Prakusya
Jennifer Capriati ( all after a win)

I have always got autographs, photographs, sweatbands and stuff off Jennifer, u just have to pick your moments right. having said that even after her loss at Wimbledon i met her after the match, coz her mum took me to see her and she gave me a huge hug and had a chat and a photo with me! :hearts::hug: :hearts: and she blew me a kiss thru the window as well when she left:kiss: :hearts: roll on wimbledon 2004! :bounce:

Well, Malisse refused me by saying "I have to practise" But he can sign if he has the time to speak. I don't blame him though. I know different person has different mind set and standard. I think (just by sensing) that Malisse has similar character with Jennifer in some aspect. They just do what they like and don't care too much about what others see them.

I don't know about the other 2, but Jen could still have been fuming about a line call, a baby (I mean a cell phone) ringing :p etc. even after a win. And Le Placid Parisian is just extremely shy. Suggestion: next time, hand Nat a half-solved math problem as that's her thing (father is a math teacher, BTW). And (except for something "meaningful" like a signed matchpoint ball), the only autographs I'd even accept would be in the form of nicknames I made up, like the above, Peppermint Patty, Cream of Farina-Elia, Baby Blue Eyes, etc. ;)

Fantastic

Best place to get autographs are either at exhibition events (including team events such as Fed Cup, Davis Cup and Hopman Cup), or at challenger and satellite tournaments. Exhibition promoters encourage players to sign as many autographs as they can. Players at challengers and satellites are so honoured that people would want their signatures that they'll do it for fun.

When he was here there were a bunch of people who wanted his auto, and he said the same thing "Sorry guys, i have to go practise". I think that was bc his coach was standing there waiting for him. After the match he signed some, but stopped when he got to us
Maybe bc we were cheering for his opponent the whole match

I havent been refused an auto by anyone, but i havent asked that many people. My first refusal is probably coming soon!
I've seen Maria Sharapova sign lots after a loss, she signed even more than her opponent who won!

lol and if Babsi only signed autos after a win she wouldnt be signing very much at all!

Only one player refused to sign me an autograph and it was Justine Henin-Hardenne in Antwerp 2002, and Jelena Dokic Antwerp 2002, but for Jelena, it was understandable as she had just retired from her match and she was crying!

Fingon's correct: I was there too and Kim definitely didn't sign anything after her loss. But I thought an official steered her quickly up the steps through the crowd, for whatever reason.
Mary always signs after a match, win or lose, as does Amy Frazier...at Eastbourne she usually asks for the person's name to personalise the autograph!!

I was thinking the same thing. Probably players like Mary though have been through enough wins and losses to be a bit more easy going about signing autographs after losing.

I was there on the practice court when he's fixing his shoes before practice. The usher let me in. After he refused me, I went out and saw his hitting partner so I asked for his sign. He gave me. Not to imply Malisse is rude or anything. It's just his way of doing things. Because I know he's the only player who two times came out during day-time matches to give autograph in the booth. I just can't go at those times because I have matches to watch. And his autograph is very special. I saw it on tv. So as Justine's.

Being a ball boy, my second job is a professional autograph getter ;) and IMO the best players are Arantxa, Mary, Justine, Chanda. Worst by far is Jennifer. Lisa is very good about it. Monica is good about, but will only sign autographs right after a pcatice. The security guards WILL NOT let anybody get autographs while moving, unless Monica specifically ask for it. Vera Zvonereva is horrible at auto's too, but I think it is because of her temper

Amanda is awesome!! She's got to be the nicest one out there. She was signing after she lost the finals at Memphis in 2003, talking to me, and taking pictures and everything!
Justine and Navratilova are awful though!
Justine- Just lost a match to Daniel at Indian Wells 2002 and had many fans wanting her autograph and she just brushed them off, like get out of my way!! ugh! also... right after a light practice, there was me and this one other guy there since it was between day-evening sessions, and the guy asked her for a picture, and she was like "hurry!" and she hardly even smiled.
Navratilova- At a practice session at the Acura 2003, she was almost done with her court, and she was just sitting there talking away and all just gathering more fans and all. By the way, she refussed to sign any before she practiced. I was pretty mad because they were pushing us back to the fence and I didn't even want to see Navratilova, I wanted to see Coetzer who was next up to practice on that court and already out there! So she's still sitting there 10 minutes into Amanda's practice and she finally decides to come off SLOWLY I might add, and by now she's got over 100 people I'd bet waiting for her *it's kids day I'm might add* and she signs maybe ONE! just one little autograph after all that!

other good players... Monica * do I even need to explain! lol*, Davenport *signed every autograph after a practice session*, can't think of anymore... lol

I don't think I've ever gotten a no for autographs. I'm surprised to hear people say that sometimes Elena D won't sign, because she's sign mine the two times I asked her, one was even before her match. She even said yes to a picture, but that's probably because she was in a good mood since she just won.

I think Hingis is pretty good. We pulled up behind her one night at Inidan Wells 2002 and since no one else was around, she signed I guess.
I did see her say no to a picture to this guy at breakfast which I can totally understand. That guy was asking just about every person with a racket though. Can you say... RUDE!!
