If shes going to these events and still has the singles ranking to get into Qualies and MD sometimes, why wouldnt she play to get a few extra bucks and some practice?? Also we all know shes capable of having a decent result every now and then.

I think she's given up singles.

She's had success with Carly before, so I'm glad they've partnered up again. Nicole easily has top 100 ability in doubles so I hope she can have a good career in dubs.

heres the low down.. basically her hip wont let her play singles. she is lucky to even play doubles. so she thinks she has a career out of doubs (stubbs played a big part in backing her with confidence, in her words "nothing will stop her except being injured", they did a lot of work together over the aussie summer). so instead of getting to second rnds here and there and using twice as much energy to get through the matches, some good days some bad.. she is just focusing on doubs as she doesnt have the confidence in her hip (as it still tweaks every now and again).

with the hip operation, it was big she had a lot of cartiliage removed, had a bone spur removed and when she was playing peers in qld, tore her labrum at 4/1 in the third which was a big injury. the op went well, and she has spent 6 months doing fitness.. with soph and casey for the last 2 weeks before leaving to the states, and basically looks in the best shape of her life. you guys gave her credit for looking fit, well she has lost another 3kgs or so making her faster and stronger.

she doesnt want to give up singles as yet, and will play whatever her ranking will get her in. but this first trip back will only be doubs to get her hip used to playing again. prob by then though her singles ranking wont be that much anyways. she had to pull out of indian harbour singles qualies because she was in the finals of charlottesville, and they dont hold matches (they start qualies on sunday there).

carly and nicole won charlottesville 7/5 3/6 10/7.. not a bad effort for her first tournie back after 6 months. hip got through it, and she'll play indian harbour, raleigh, and carson. head back home and then do europe probably with carly. they are an awesome combination and make it look easy so i think they will look to form something over the next months and future.

dont write her off.. id say she'll have her best to come, in the form of doubs though. she'll make a good career out of it.. and ill put my money on the fact that she'll be main draw for aussie open.

Oh okay then, so no singles then for her for a bit until her hip is fully fine, or when it's as close to fully fine as these injuries never fully heal.

But yeah I'm glad she's playing doubles for now, good on her.

Thanks for the update. Its unusual just to tear your labrum like that, normally its resulted from a continual build up of strain. I'm sure she would've been playing on a strained hip for a few weeks before the fraying of the tendon got worse and caused unbearable pain.
Fantastic result for her this week. Hopefully she can regain confidence in trusting her body and get back on the singles court soon. Not an easy thing to do by any means.

^^^

you know your stuff hey. the labrum started giving her pain back in 2004(?) when she went to thailand to play the wta with monique and went jetskiing on one of the days off. that triggered it. but since then, like you said wear and tear on it has resulted in the gradual build up and genetics has also played a part with it, since the bone spur (which she has on both sides, left and right legs) was affecting the labrum and irritating it. she was told by her surgeon that you will probably need the same op on the right side, so when you have 3 months off come in and get it done. hopefully that won't be anytime soon.

but that match against peers must have been the tipping point, as when she went to push off the left leg from an off forehand early in the second the leg just gave way. she is trying to avoid the right hip op for some time to come as you can imagine. so we'll see how it goes in the coming weeks.

unfortunately she isnt looking at singles anytime soon. from speaking to her in sydney, she just doesnt trust it and more so doesnt want to spend another year or too floating aroung the 300's (at best she thinks she could get to 250, anything under a bonus) when she can spend that year concentrating on doubs and making a good career out of it, instead of going to doubs in 2 years and having to grind it out since its so hard to balance a decent doubs ranking and singles when its in the 300's. with the wta changing the rules of entering tournaments in singles with a certain ranking now, her singles ranking will phase out but after this trip will play singles if she gets in but wont focus on it.

its just a lot smarter looking at it from a career point of view. she's done the hovering around the 300's.. she's 26 this year. has the potential to have a career in doubs, why spend another 2 years doing your head in with up and down results on the itf circuit when you can be looking at grand slams.

Nicole is playing doubles at the $50k challenger in Carson, California this week. Her partner is none other than Monique Adamzack. They are the second seeds.

Its disappointing Nicole has pulled out of singles qualifying the last 3 challengers. She really needs to score a few points just to maintain a world ranking as once she's dropped out, its very hard to get a ranking again from scratch. She should've been able to score an easy 1 point or so at Carson this week.

Big congrats to Krizzy who made it all the way to the doubles final with her partner Carly Gullickson! Big pay day and huge ranking points for Nicole :) Hopefully this spurs her on to bigger and better things on the doubles circuit...a WTA final, that's pretty huge! Unfortunately they lost to Chan/Spears 6-3 6-4, but great week regardless.

massive effort beating the us open semifinalists as well in the semis 6/4 6/0 :)

they didn't get in to tokyo as the cut was crazy being 62. its the only P5 WTA with a 16 doubles draw. so they are playing a 25k in japan, then a 100k+H and then Osaka WTA.

i am guessing they are looking to play oz open together if krizzy can get her ranking to 90 or under, which will be an awesome effort!

great effort....i will admit didnt think they would win that semi!!........this combination rocks.....hope they stick together for a while!!.......kriz could be the new musgrave or mcshea!!
