hey sean,

nic said she'd text you later to give you the updates :-)

i don't think they'll lose a set in these two weeks together. was a smart decision from both of them to combine, and they are doing it fairly comfortably.

singles wise its good to see her finally coming back with the results she should be having. should be an interesting one between mon and her tomorrow, since it was fairly close last week with nic not playing great and mon not at her best either. but both look like they are in form now and hopefully they'll put it out and play a good match tomorrow! nic was 4/1 down in the second today, but reeled it back in with some great tennis and showing mentally she's just as tough in singles as doubs.

I am shocked at that picture! I saw Nicole Kriz at the Manly Seaside Championships a few years back and she was lacking in fitness hugely. Great to see her looking in shape!

Thanks mate,
Just got home, but thankfully got the sms this arvo at work (to put me out of my misery..lol)
How unreal has this year been so far!? QF & now at least a SF in her 1st 2 tournies of the year. As well as a dub's title (& not far away from a 2nd) already!
I can't wait to see how high her ranking will be at the end of the year.
Yesterday's 2r sucked for me. I couldn't really enjoy a win by either Lucy or Nic. Of all the 2 players to have to play each other!
She's gotta be playing well considering Maekawa beat Wheelz yesterday.
Mon should be pretty worried about tomorrow.....

At those Manly Seaside's I was sitting next to Todd Reid's mum. She also told me just what you have Sean. Nicole is really lovely...funny, kind, great sense of humour with a lovely family. Monique won the final against Jenny Belobradjic that year. Incidentially Mrs Reid was also telling me the names of some of the Aussie girls (AT THAT TIME) who weren't so honest in their line calling. These smaller events are great opportunities for the fans to meet and chat with the players and their families.

That can't be Kriz
So good to see her doing well, albiet a weaker tournie, but usually Nic would find a way to lose early anyway.
I remember about 4 or so years ago Nic wiped put Stosur 63 63 at a 25K and then injuries took hold. Hopefully she can get to that form as honestly top 200 isn't beyond her with her decent fitness now.

sean, you should've seen the match! i'll give a bit of a run down on it..

first set adamczak broke kriz first game.. came out firing off kriz's first serves and nailed 2 big returns to take an early break. that pretty much set the trend for that set.. adamczak was playing great and heavy from the back and although nic wasn't playing bad, she just couldn't do enough to get herself out of the back and into the point.

second set was a total turn around, adamczak won the first game and then nic just rolled her 5 games straight. which was good to see her come back when she could easily have said too good. but she actually played and picked it up and then took it out 6/2.

the third set was a real grind and whoever had the bigger heart would win.. and kriz has a massive heart and mon is of course known for losing the plot and finding a way to beat herself. same thing, adamczak got an early break but kriz broke back for 3/2 instead of 4/1 with a massive volley after a backhand chip.. big point! kriz actually looked like she would break at 3/3 with adamczak serving, but she came out with 2 big serves to hold. kriz held for 4/4 with some great serves and one point where she actually slipped, fell over ran and got the dropshot from behind the baseline and then picked off a passing shot down the line from adamczak where she cracked a backhand. then adamczak was serving, and kriz had two break points one at 30/40 where adamczak hit a smash which hit the tape and dribbled over, then hit an unreturnable at ad in. kriz then went down into the wind, and was 0/30 down, then had a match point down at 30/40 but played a great inside out forehand about a foot off the ground into moniques backhand and then followed it with a smash. second match point down at ad in for monique, kriz then played it out and hit another massive inside out forehand to her backhand corner and won the point. that changed momentum and kriz broke to go 6/5 up and trying to serve it out. mon just came out cracking returns with nothing to lose and won it off a backhand return at 30/40.

breaker: pretty much by this time kriz was making monique play some really tough low shots, and trying to draw her in or get in herself. monique didn't like someone dictating the play and under pressure missed her approaches. it went 3/3 then kriz went for a big forehand which drew an error and took her to 6/3 and serving. lost one of them with monique hitting a huge backhand winner down the line.. and then kriz drew an error at 6/4 to close it out.

its a shame for monique, as she is too good of a player to self destruct. but kriz just had it mentally combined with some top 200 tennis and played smart. the only way she would've lost it was if she didn't believe in herself. fitness wise having spoke to her after the match, shoulder is good and her body isn't hurting which she was laughing at. she said she sent a text to her trainer asking if this is what its like to be fit, where you aren't hurting coming at the end of the second week :-) classic.

great win.

Yeah it's her 1st $25k singles title (had won a $10k a few years back).
She'll still play the NZ's. It's still worth it money wise, as well as points wise. If she could win both the tournies, she'd rise up from # 380 to about # 330....

I dont know why everyone is shocked, Nicole is a naturally gifted player, her career has taken a while to take off as she had some fairly serious injuries, in particular her shoulder, and some of those injuries were as a result of poor fitness, but given that she's now overcome that, provided she can keep getting fitter, top 250 is a big possibility.

She's had wins over Timea Bacinsky, Youlia Fedossova, Sam Stosur, Melanie South, Evie Dominikovic to name a few, so she can match it with the top 100-200 players.

^^ well put

quick run down of the match again as it was pretty high quality for both players..

1st set: kriz surprisingly didn't even look nervous starting out, and came out pretty aggressive.. the game plan was obvious from the start which was to get around and hit her off forehand into marinas bh corner, making her slice and then look to come in behind it. which she did pretty well and combined with some big serves took it and broke for the set.

2nd set: marina stepped up and started finding her range a little better making kriz hit some short chip backhands and marina followed it in behind it.. both played a very similar game plan but kriz just had a little more stick to her forehand and took more chances on the grass. but marina came out at the end of the second and broke kriz after a shocking call off an inside out fh off hers to get the set 64.

3rd set: kriz was serving and came out strong, it was a massive game and she played it smart opting to take off some pace off the first serve to make sure they were going in. she should've been 2/0 but the line judge didn't call a ball out at 30/40 which apparently everyone else knew was at least a foot out. she lost that game (which would've taken her to 3/0 up) but then went went down to hold. it was 2/2 and 30/30 when marina came in off a chip bckhand into kriz's bh corner.. kriz just lined this backhand passing shot up with such pace and accuracy, and nailed this thing cross court before marina even split step! unreal shot, and then with that momentum kriz went on to hold. at 3/2 it was a pretty big game but at 30/30 kriz got the point and got to have a look at a point to go 4/2 up in the third. by this stage you'd think that someone whose first final in a 25k would be tightening up a little. but after the serve, nic brought her in with a chip backhand and marina approached the other way to her fh.. kriz looking for a bh changed direction and on the run hit this unreal passing shot down the line with pretty much everything she had. it went on for 4/2 then 5/2.. and marina was just trying to find ways to hurt kriz but just couldn't get enough on her or get the ball away from her. at 5/2 she held. 5/3 kriz had a match point at 40/30, but marina proved why she's a world class played when she came in and hit a volley off kriz's passing shot which would've gone past anyone else. at deuce kriz copped a shit bounce, and then took another shitty call to take it to 5/4. they both held the next 3 games taking it to a breaker.

tb: kriz came out and like the other 2 tie breakers this week (and im sure she has a pretty good record with the breakers as she clearly thrives off the pressure of it) got a good early lead.. 5/1 in fact.. i don't think marina was really up for somene to match her on the grass and who was prepared to come in as well, but this mind you is after 20 days straight so its a credit to her that she was playing that well. it went 5/2 6/2 with kriz trying to serve it out.. couldn't get it. but then on the next one they played it out and with marina coming to the net and nic hitting this low chip angle pass, it looked like marina would put it away.. the pass ended up been this unreal dink and kriz chased it to the net anticipating a drop volley off marina.. which she was obviously playing and probably felt kriz coming in behind it, overplayed it and it went into the net with kriz winning her first 25k.

one thing which was great to see, apart from her allowing herself to play the tennis everyone knows she is capable of.. is that mentally she looked right at home as if it was her 10th final. and to take out her first 25k title on her first apperance (against a very impressive grass court player) is something that i don't think many people do.

I've seen Nicole play in Belgium, she was patchy, but when she was on, she was amazing, such a natural volleyer, and I saw her cream this girl 6-0. Saw her at the Aust Open this year and she was looking so much fitter.

I've never thought that much of Marina, and as we know Wheeler and Adamczak are inconsistent, so while its impressive she won, its not a shock, as she got the talent, its always been an issue with fitness and playing consistantly at the top level which I've seen her play in patches in matches. Obviously those patches are getting bigger. She has an exciting year ahead. I'd really like to see her keep playing with Marina in doubles for a while though, I think they could crack the top 100 if they did

Disappointing that Kriz withdrew from both $10K's in NZ. She could've picked up some valuable points to push her into top 350

sammyb
Feb 19th, 2008, 10:50 AM
i dunno.. i think it might be smarter to withdraw and be 100% for perth. take into consideration she played 16 out of the max 18 matches that could've been played in the two weeks, would have less than a week to recover/prepare/train on different surface. then assuming she does well.. will play 4 weeks straight, and not be fresh for perth with more points on offer.

smarter move to take a bit of a rest, train up again and put 100% into perth instead of dogging it out in nz for 2 fairly strong 10's worth no points really, and not be fresh for the 2 25's. looks like she is pacing herself (and shoulder) for a long and good year ahead, instead of chasing every point on offer.

You think this is a good draw? I think its a dangerous draw!! Kyung-Mi Chang almost cracked the top 250 a few years ago then got injured.

She's been on the tour now for 10 years, and has made 16 singles final on the ITF circuit. Her best result was winning through qualifying at WTA - Japan Open.

She also pushed Nicole Pratt in Fed Cup a few years ago to 3 sets.

She has beaten the likes of Su Wei Hsieh twice, Yuka Yoshida, Akiko Morigami, Mi-Ra Jeon, Tomoko Yonemura, Adamczak, Shikha and Neha Uberoi, Musgrave, Watson, Sekulovski, Dittmann, also pushed Kirelenko to 6-4 6-4, Jie Zheng to 6-4 6-3.

She's just returned after a 5 month injury lay off but did pretty well in these $25K's last year reaching a semi final, quarter final after coming through qualifying in both.

I think Kriz will have her work cut out for her, hope she can win though, she needs points!

Shoulders don't usually just go and tear in one serve or shot, the more serious injuries occur when playing on a strained shoulder over a period of time and all the little tears then become one big tear in the labrum area or rotator cuff.

Hopefully her retirement was more precautionary and she won't be out for long.

Alexandra Stevenson is the perfect example of a player back from shoulder reconstructive surgery who has been very sensible and has taken precautions with lots of retirements to make sure she could successfully comeback. Shoulders are a very slow healing part of the body and you can't just rush back and serve 180km serves, Joachim Johansson stupidly did and he paid the ultimate price. At least Kriz took 18 months the first time around, I'm hoping its nothing serious.

What has happened to nicole? she had a good run at the start of the year on the grass, but has faded away AGAIN!!!!
Its always something with her. She is a seasonal player and has been her whole career. She has been around a long time, but has never fully committed to being a tennis player. I understand she has had injuries, but she has never been fully fit and got her body right her whole carrer, if you can even call it one!
Nicole is the last one from her generation just hanging on, all the others have either stepped up or given up! i wonder what she will do!!! I wish her the best with whatever the future holds
She's playing in Canada $25K this week. I think you will find that she is limited to what she can play due to finances! I still think it was unfortunate whilst high on confidence that she pulled out of the NZ $10K circuit, she needed to ride the wave she was on. The whole stop/start schedule is difficult.

my my, you are quick to judge a situation without knowing the details. its so funny to see someone being an expert (as you seem to think you are from other posts i have read) on subjcts such as tennis and players. do you know her, or have spoken to her as to why she hasn't been playing??

sure she hasn't been fit in the past, but if you do some homework now - there are even pics on the website somewhere, humour youself and look at them if you will. you'll find she's one of the fitter ones out there, and if you'd actually know your stuff is training with the person who is responsible for 2 other aussies known for their fitness. enough said.

as for why she hasn't been playing, she has had some serious issues with family keeping her at home. which for her, family is more of a priority than tennis. so yeah criticise her for her priorities, good job.

after tough draws in japan, she basically has nothing to defend for the whole year, and you don't think thats a smart move!? with these us tournies coming up and the rest of the oz circuit?! she will have her career high after this trip (if not this week) with another 14 or so tournaments to come, so yeah i guess she should go with your theory and give it up!

.. oh i wonder what she will do?!?!

Hopefully she can push towards the top 300 for the remainder of the season. If the Aussie 25k's are weak, she definitely has a shot at a top 250 ranking at the end of the year
Her results already warrant a qualifying wildcard for next year's Australian Open, if she can make the top 250, she deserves a main draw wildcard

Love that doubles pairing!!! Those two at the net at this level would be almost unpassable!!

they looked pretty sharp yesterday in the doubs. they seem to combine like they have been playing together for the last 6 months and the only 2 games they lost they actually had deuce points on as well. its just good to see two people who know how to play doubs, play together and just make it look so easy.

sidenote. carly looks a lot fitter now, and has obviously worked hard on it.. she's moving great around the court and her hands are amazing! a few times nic just stopped and stared at her and they were laughing. they will probably be a better combo than the kriz/baker one, but having said that carly has been heard saying they were the toughest pair to beat on the usta circuit in 06/07.

nic today in the singles looked a little small compared to fedossova! and also looked a little rattled as well. not playing her normal game, and looked rushed. had to leave at 6/1 2/0 but into the second she started to settle down and work her way into the points well - and started coming in. the other chick played some massive service games, and covered the court extremely well which frustrated nic as she was trying to find a weak spot and move her around. it was closer than the score, but nic just didn't look there at all.

bring on the doubs

they played unbelievably well too. they were up 5/0 and had two games point in that game as well! they hardly missed in the first set, kriz didn't miss a volley until 5/1 and carly was unreal from the back and poaching at the net.

they were down 3/1 in the second, and came back 5 games straight after some good constructed plays again. they just play so well together and seem to have a lot of fun too.

Nic actually played pretty decently in her singles (she knew the 0&0 scoreline would give the wrong impresion). Radwanska hit winner after winner, a literally flawless match from her. So, just bad luck with the draw on the day.

Sep 17th, 2008, 03:03 AM
Torn Labrum is quite serious if thats what it is, and will take a while to recover from as the Labrum is the tendon right in the joint.

With any muscular/tendon tear though, they can't tell until they operate how severe it is, and even with the most advanced scanning its still not clear enough to the radiologists. The fortunate thing is that the damage nearly always appears worse on the scans as there is scar tissue, fraying of the tendons etc. that blurs the scans somewhat.

I'm hoping that its not as serious as it sounds
