Im sure Prague and Italy are only bout 3 hours max away so i strongly disagree she was tired

but yer 3:15pm no time to practice at all!

If only it was straight from 1 place to another with no delays & waiting around.
ie. dub's final played at night. Flight into Milan at Midnight, flight to Prague sometime the next morning, all the travelling between etc etc. Would've been easier if the dub's was played earlier in the day. Makes it even better of TA to be playing the $25k dub's finals on a Friday. At least TA gets it right occasionally......
But point is they had no time between the dub's final & the singles qualies, so it was a good effort.
Hopefully they can make the dub's SF's......

Qualifying 1st round

Nada Sghyar MAR [WC] vs Nicole Kriz AUS

WHAT A GREAT CHANCE FOR SOME POINTS !!

Shame it's only 2 points for winning the 1st round......hopefully Dekmeijere gets through against Salerni. I reckon Nic would have a good chance against her. Salerni will be difficult though.
Nic would have to be feeling a lot more confident after this week. Winning a set off a player ranked in the 160's in singles & then having a match point in the dub's semi's last night.
Hopefully she fully thrashes this wc girl & gets some more confidence going in the singles.

Q2: 8/213-Maria-Emilia Salerni (ARG) d. Kriz - 3-6,6-1,6-2

Salerni's a former top 100 player who's improved her ranking by over 100 spots since the beginning of April. Great effort again to win a set off a quality opponent.

Great fighting win....hopefully they back up with another win tonight over Pin and Sequera!

Hopefully the win over Pin & Grandin last week will help. Pin & Sequera have played one previous doubles tournie together. US Open 2006, they beat a pair of wc's, then retired 4 games into their 2r match.

ozfan44
May 16th, 2007, 12:09 PM
Sequera is a moonballer.....one of the best tooo...right up there with Conchita Martinez....hopefully nic and krizzy are playing nice attacking tennis and are on target with their smashes they will get a few....pin aint that great at dubz saw her and grandin against sam and lisa at ao....get her at the net and then drill it at her all she does is pop the ball up! Only thing that camille and milagros have in the favour is the surface other than that nic and leanne hopefully (fingers x'd) will get another win!

Nicole just had her first singles win of the season this week :tape:

She's excelling in doubles though...next week she'll enjoy another career highest ranking in doubles (like this week) really close from the Top 100 :worship:

I found some old pics of Nic from a tournament in Madrid 2002. Enjoy

This was actually her 2nd 6-0,6-1 win of the season!! She won a US challenger qualies match a few tournies ago too.

Pin/Sequera d. Kriz/Baker - 6-1,6-4

Still, 30 points for the win. This adds 18 points to her ranking (replaces her 11th best tournie - which was 12 points). Moves her up a few spots to about 108......

Sean, any chance Nic and Leanne will get into dubz at FO??

They're definitely aiming for it.
The good thing with the dub's is that it goes by ranking at the time of signing in (unlike singles).
Leanne & Lubiani got into AO dub's with a combined ranking pretty much the same as what Nic & Leanne will be after the latest points are added.
I reckon a good result at Strasbourg would seal it. It's gonna be very close though.

You're right.
Here I was thinking it was a fucked draw & was stoked that she came through it so strongly, only to realise it was the bagel troll she was playing.
I hope this doesn't work against her in the next round. I've noticed a lot of these players that beat a bagel girl 1r, lose the next. As if they got used to a crap standard of opponent. What an experience for Nic to play the # 21 in a WTA on centre court!
This is scary & exciting for her!! Let's hope for the best & see if this can be a bit of a kick along for the rest of the season in singles.

I'd say Nic would've had to withdraw from the $25k. She would've been unable to play the qualies at the $25k anyway, as she would've been in Paris. Whereas Leanne made the MD & still has plenty of time to arrive there.
Hopefully Nic still plays the dub's at the $25k. I have a feeling she may take the week off though.....

Kriz isn't great on grass! She's better on slower surfaces as she struggles with her movement on the slippery grass. She doesnt possess a big serve so that doesnt help either.

Im backing up Azza on this one!

sammyb
May 29th, 2007, 03:06 PM
^^ sorry buddy, but its the other way round.. whens the last time you have seen her play?

shes actually not slow, and when you ask people about how she plays.. one thing they will tell you is she's fast and pretty agile. back 2 years ago when she was carrying extra weight, fair enough.. not as agile. but even from juniors and especially now there's not much she wont scramble down. she's got great anticipation and quick feet. you can see it especially in doubs if she has to change direction suddenly to chase a ball.

serve isnt big, but its accurate and she's a confidence player.. so if she gets going look out for her to create some upsets. - take when she almost had lisa mcshea and had an unreal grass summer circuit in oz.

its not her fav but she doesnt dislike it. she likes to create more so, and look for opportunities and work a point, which you can do on hard and clay which is why she's had better results on them. but shes got her slice/fh and volleys.. im with sean here :-)

bad news, she went down today 3 in the third. looked a little lost in the first set.. just trying to find her way on the grass. her opponent got to play her match prior so was already used to the surface. then krizzy got going, broke her and served it out in the second. but in the third didn't come in as much.. no idea why. looked like she was having a few problems with string and sent off two racquets to get strung in the first set too.

the girl was ok, served well and didn't make many mistakes but kriz had just an unusual day.. missing her fh shots by metres, and slicing her bh (which would be a big weapon on grass) half way up the net, just looked like she was struggling with something.

i guess going from 2 months on clay to grass with no time to hit on it would be tough, but still i think she would've had this match. just doesn't look like the old confident krizzy out there. normally shes peppy and smiling and sure of herself, but looks like she's just not happy and its showing in her singles.

but i would still like to think they will take out the doubs!!

SF against 3/405-Dellacqua/Hewson who they should be OK against....

Nic needs to reach the final here to have any points added to her ranking....

Reaching the QF's at Surbiton will make no difference to her ranking. Her lowest tournament that counts for her ranking is a $25k SF, so any results need to be better than that to add to her ranking.
She's confident of getting through qualies for Wimbledon dub's though.
Can anyone remember if they played dub's qualies last year at Wimbledon?

She's played with Emily a fair bit in the past. They won a $10k together a couple of years back from memory. She started her comeback last year partnering Emily. They didn't do too flash together though....Nic's done much better with Baker & a few of the US challenger players (eg. Gullickson, Tweedie-Yates, Fusano)
I think Emily's only real chance is with Casey or Wheelz...

Fair bit of diff in the rankings:
464-Kriz vs 294-Baker....

Head 2 Head:
2006 - Taupo NZL - HARD - R16:
4/428-Baker d. Q/nr-Kriz - 6-3,6-2 (1 of Nic's 1st 2 tournies back from a year off though)

2006 - Fukuoka JPN - CARPET - Q-16:
2/391-Baker d. 845-Kriz - 6-4,6-3

If we follow the pattern it should be a 7-5,6-4 scoreline this time.

Nic was actually having better results in her very 1st tournie back from injury in NZ last year.
She was making $25k QF's (at least 3 I can remember) last year. It's a good thing she's playing a $10k next week, I can't understand why Leanne would feel the need to though. Very bizarre move considering she's top 300 in singles & top 110 in dub's. Fair enough the money would be nice, but it's going to be of no use to her ranking. They'll probably end up having to play against each other in the semi's next week anyway. Hey I'll be happy just to see Nic win a set in her 1r match.....

She needs to win at least 12 points per dub's tournie before any points are added to her ranking. She'd only play the dub's here for extra match play (not adviseable at a $10k) or for the extra $300 US cash for winning it.

Realistically, it'll be only singles this week.....

:help: Leanne & Nic are top seeds in the doubles draw :help::help::tape:
What the hell are they doing?! Here is the draw...
(1)Baker/Kriz (NZL/AUS) v Jones/Seredni (USA)
Besovic/Munch-Soegaard (BIH/NOR) v (wc)Di Leo/Gray (USA)

(4)Berry/Clarke (GBR) v (Q)Gilchrist/Will (USA)
Fraser/Henry (USA) v (Q)Capra/Gibbs (USA)

Couts/Paz (USA/VEN) v Alvarez Teran/Yoo (BOL/USA)
(3)Gates/Tananta (USA/INA) v (wc)Long/Lubinsky (USA)

Chan/Starr (AUS) v (wc)Frilling/Wilson (USA)
(2)Lee/Zabala (NZL/COL) v Bajramovic/Melikishvili (USA/GEO)

As much as I love Shona, it really says somthing about the draw when she is the second seed, if they loose a match, or even a set here....well....no words could express how dissapointed I would be.

Anyways...
Nicole is the 3rd seed, here is her draw...
1)Sandy Gumulya (INA) v Q
(wc)Beatrice Capra (USA) v Q

Gabriela Paz (VEN) v (wc)Nicole Gibbs (USA)
(5)Kimberly Couts (USA) v Amy Dillingham (USA)

(3)Nicole Kriz (AUS) v Melissa Berry (GBR)
Nina Munch-Soegaard (NOR) v (wc)Marilyn Baker (USA)

Maria-Fernanda Alvarez-Teran (BOL) v (wc)Whitney Wilson (USA)
(6)Sofia Melikishvili (GEO) v Q

Come on Nic, a semi at the very least is what I expect from this tournament...altho Melikishvili could be tougher than she looks...

Good luck :worship:

I guess they know what they're doing as far as playing the dub's.
It's probably as simple as, they're earning $12-$20k per year & trying to travel & live off that. The $300 each (or whatever it is) for winning the dub's title is probably what they're after, as well as the extra matches.

Well Nic has no excuse. She'll be top seed in next weeks $10k.
Leanne may be playing a WTA qualies next week, if she'd stayed on for the dub's, she would've missed it.
As far as I can see, fair enough withdrawing from the dub's. The singles results are pretty bad though & it'd be hard to believe they'd have tanked them. Why bother entering & wasting money playing here. As it is, they'll get like $200 in total for the week. That'd be lucky to cover accomodation for 4 days max, let alone travel.

hey seany.. shes finally back online i see!

spoke to her yesterday.. she's pretty pissed off about the peck (understandably) but happier that singles is finally coming back to her. as results have shown its been a slow year since she was concentrating on doubles for the first half of it. but is working hard now on getting it back, and said its taken a while to remember how to play it! i guess in the first 6 months she only played maybe 10 singles matches?

either way, she's heading home in the next few days and is going to get ready for the summer. im sure she'll have a good end of the year as on record she usually has some good wins whilst in oz at the end of the year. looking forward to seeing her and soph play some doubs together.. saw them in japan and they smashed sema/sema but her peck swelled up to twice the size after.

tough match.. both girls came out firing and surprisingly with few nerves. had chances at 4/3 and 4/4 but the experience came through in the older girls and they broke back.

wind was hard and both bai and kriz got caught a couple of times (as did the other girls though) but massive credit to bai as a jnr for stepping up. she made some great volleys and crossed on a couple of big points, only getting a few shakes at the middle of the second.

kriz is looking very fit, she's obviously done some hard work on that (i hear she is working with giselle martin now) and served great today, returned better than average and crossed well. probably would've liked to have done a bit more with a few of the volleys but did really well.

very enjoyable match to watch.. kriz is definately a top 50 doubs player and bai is going to be something to look out for in the future. good to see the crowd support out there.. anyone watching would've thought kriz was a local melb girl

hey sean,

nic said she'd text you later to give you the updates :-)

i don't think they'll lose a set in these two weeks together. was a smart decision from both of them to combine, and they are doing it fairly comfortably.

singles wise its good to see her finally coming back with the results she should be having. should be an interesting one between mon and her tomorrow, since it was fairly close last week with nic not playing great and mon not at her best either. but both look like they are in form now and hopefully they'll put it out and play a good match tomorrow! nic was 4/1 down in the second today, but reeled it back in with some great tennis and showing mentally she's just as tough in singles as doubs.
