If Lindsay is going to win a title, this is the time. She seems to be playing well, and she can easily beat Schiavone. Kim has owned Lindsay this year, but Kim will no doubt be nervous about trying to achieve #1. We have all seen Kim get tight in big matches...and Lindsay can take advantage.

bcoene - I take it you didn't read any articles after Kim's QF win ;) The press alerted her afterward that she would be #1 if she won the tournament. She was surprised as she thought she needed a certain number of bonus points. Ai actually congratulated Kim last week on becoming #1 (Ai said she added wrong! LOL!). Seems like other people have paid more attention than Kim has. Anyway, the media let her know yesterday, so this is the first match Kim has played where she knows she can be #1 by winning...

No, actually she said it on her website, that she was tired in the final against Justine. And she just started playing three days after. Tough match agains Sharapova. If tonight is tough and tomorrow too... I'm a little afraid. Actually, maybe she won't play tomorrow. lol

jenglisbe
Aug 10th, 2003, 01:36 AM
TenIsseFan - She was definitely tired against Justine, but I think 2-3 days rest is pretty good. She also cut out the doubles this week - and next, I think - so that will help. She will definitely be tired after next week, and I hope 1 week off is enough rest before the Open.

If she wins this week, she will get the #1 ranking and might consider pulling out next week (I hope). If not, then maybe she can go for #1 in Canada. It can only help her to be in these pressure situations so she can get used to them.

I hope she gets the top tomorrow. It would be good. About the doubles, the draw is not out yet but I know that Sugiyama isn't playing in singles, so she probably won't be there. So no doubles next week too. I wonder if she'll do the USO, because she says on her site that doubles might be the cause of the fatigue during the Justine match. I hope she plays, because I love doubles too and they're a GREAT team and it would be fun to see Kim's name number one everywhere after the USO, but if it's a nuisance to her singles performances, then... she shouldn't play. What do you think ?

Mase - I am in South Carolina, so not far from you :)

TenIsseFan - I think doubles at the Open will be good for her. She will likely play it on her day off, so it is just like a practice session. I think it helps her relax, and it also helps her aggressiveness. She added in her journal that she likes doubles, so I think she will play the Open. We might see her play less doubles next year, though (i.e. just the majors and maybe a few random tournaments).

TenIsseFan - I don't think most players even practice at the net; players are brought up to play from the baseline, as that is easier at a younger age. A net game takes longer to develop, and juniors aren't interested in that. Then you are 18 years old, it's hard to suddenly start doing something you have never done before.

Billie Jean King told an interesting story about Sharapova; Maria played World Team Tennis last year, and she told BJK that was the first time she had ever played doubles  Can you imagine? She was like 15 years old and one of the top prospects for the pros, and she had never played doubles!! No wonder they don't know how to play at net...

I can imagine if you never play doubles, you could think. Why do I need to be able to volley well. But once you play doubles you notice it's fun and you realize you can use it in singles too.

That's very weird. I mean, I don't particularly like playing at the net, but it's something I like to practice. You never know when you have to change your game or add some things to turn the match around. Sometimes you can't rely on your best shot, it's good to practice and have some more assets. Like volleys. And doubles is a good practice for that.

jenglisbe
Aug 10th, 2003, 01:59 AM
bcoene - I think the other problem is this; players do practice volleys, but announcers have said the players don't practice the transition volley (i.e. the volley after your serve or your approach shot). That is the most difficult volley because you are away from the net and because you have to stop before hitting the volley.

I can see that; many players have good volleys (the Spaniards hit great drop volleys), but they can't serve and volley, and they are only good at net with a sitter volley.

Players need more net practice in real points, not just drills.

Yeah, I don't know why I said she didn't speak french, she did in her RG speech. I meant it wasn't her main language. Did you know she also speaks japanese ? When she plays doubles with Ai, they talk in japanese. She said this in an interview during Wimbledon. I don't if she speaks fluently japanese or if she only knows the japanese tennis vocabulary.

That's a good point. My volley is getting better because I'm playing some doubles. But in singles when you come to net, often you are not yet at the net when you have to hit back.

But they should realise this, it's not that hard to practise that, but it is a very hard shot.

Kim shouldn't play serve and volley, but certain rally's are easier to finish when you come to the net and hit a good volley.

bcoene - I see no reason why Kim couldn't serve and volley 2-3 times a match; it gives her opponent something to think about, and she can hit a good enough serve to have an easy volley. The main thing, though, is as you said; there are plenty of times Kim could finish a point off at net instead of staying at the baseline and letting her opponent back in the point.

As for the practice thing - one would think it would be obvious to practice that, but I guess not. I remember announcers making a big deal out of the fact that Hingis would practice the transition volley (and all kinds of other shots, like overheads from the baseline). That is why she looked comfortable any place on the court.

I was thinking about asking Kim. You can ask questions on her website.

I was thinking about asking which opponents are difficult for her and what opponents are easy for her.

I mean she sometimes defeats top-30 players 6-2, 6-1 or something like that.

Certainly when you are a pro. For me it's not obvious to practise every shot because I'm not happy about the normal shots.

But the pro's have so many time, they should practise everything.

Fran is fast, fit and a fighter - game is more like Kims minus the splits plus elements of Schnyder, Martinez and a good backhand too - if Fran can start to hold her serve she is one of the tours next potential giant-killers - if she had Justines serve....

Myskina used to be a difficult opponent for Kim. She lost their first two meetings, but won the last three.

I remember when she lost in their first meeting at Wimbledon in 2000 she said she had problems with Myskina's game. I don't think Myskina was ranked that high.

I was really surprised by the result, because in 1999 Kim reached the fourth round of Wimbledon, and in 2000 only the second round.
