Anna K., OK she's not the best in the history of women's tennis, but she has a very good return of serve.

I have no idea who is the best all time.

Serena sure is one of a kind! She┤s top 5 in BOTH best servers AND best returners!! Damn, if both the return and the serve are working......that means double baggel baby!!

On the forehand side Graf without a doubt. Serena and Capriati also have legendary forehand returns.

On the backhand side, Serena and Venus. Seles also had an amazing backhand return.

Gotta be Seles. She was lethal off from both sides. Chris Evert, Serena, Steffi, and Martina H (for accuracy) would round out the rest of my Top 5 in no partcular order.

Monica Seles pre-stabbing for sure..

Around 1990 -1993 Monica took ther eturn of serve to a new level imo...when she would be down returning it was common place for her to hit 3 or 4 return winners in a row and in pressure situations... 1992 RG semsi vs Sabatini coming from 2-4 down, and against capriati in the 91 US Semis are 2 standout examples that spring to mind...

Serena is up there also, as is Lindsay Davenport and Martina Navratilova - her returns may not have been winners but her chip and charge etc was lethal and put opponents under huge pressure on the 2nd serve...

Graf's forehand was okay, but her backhand return was a weakness that Nav was able to exploit...

Serena!

All you have to do is look at the first two balls hit during that semifinal.

Serena hit a winner off Kim's first serve. One of my favorite all time moments.

Seles was a return demon in her prime. She saw it so well that her return was always extremely dangerous, even later in her career.

Monica for sure. Her style is perfect for big returns. Short backswing (due to to both hands on the racquet) allows her to hit winners off big returns and her angles are amazing. Another thing that I love about her return is her consistency. It is like every time she goes for all or nothing, but rarely ever misses.

its got to be monica...in her prime...and even challenging for it today, last year at the wta championships she returned lots of venus' good first serves for winners, same w/ davenport's

I believe Serena has the best return of serve from what I've seen.

When she's on, I agree Kournikova also has some blasting returns. Which I guess she badly needs to compensate for a serve like hers. I've seen some of her matches against Venus and Venus' power serves were met with power returns from Anna.

I too agree that Serena has the best return for a woman, followed by Monica Seles;)

Also, honorable mentions to Martina Hingis. After the power babes kept breaking her serve, she broke em right back:D!

To quote Venus Williams the "revolutionary" Monica Seles.

The cureent elite players are the best returners, Serena, Venus, Lindsay. Think about serve speeds,a dn how much they've increased. The serve is the one of the times when the new rackets REALLY change the game. human reflexes are about what they were a generation ago. Tennis rackets are far different. IMonica pointed this out. Instead of serves coming in at 70 mph, now they're coming in over 100 mph.

Players who can return modern serves onthe lines are far and away the best returners ever. Magaret Court was the best returner of her day (she was the best EVERYTHING in her day). She never even faced serves that Venus puts away for winners routinely.

Ihad to give Monica some thought, but to me, her service retunr, (til this year) looked every bit as good as it did in 1991. But she didn't dominate with her return in 2000-2. The servers were justthatmuch better than in 1990-2.

Monica - she pioneered the aggressive service return. The angles she hit off serves were amazing.

Lindsay & Jennifer: Lindsay is very aggressive on her returns, and hits them hard and deep. Jen can be aggressive, but she is SO good at getting any serve back deep, regardless if its a winner, because its her returns that keep her in the points. See Jen vs Serena.

Serena is a ? for me. Simply because when she is on, they are coming off the sweet spot each time. Against Dementieva at Wimbledon, she was hitting those service returns harder than the serve and so accurately. But Serena also is liable to miss easily, I have seen her when she is constantly missing returns.

So in my opinion, Monica, Lindsay and Jen are the most consistent, best returners when measured against pace, depth and placement.

Obviously all Top 10-15 players possess a good return of serve, but the above ladies just use that shot more effectively.

chris evert, lindsay davenport, jennifer capriati, serena williams, and martina hingis

you could prolly add some players that i've never seen play-- let alone remember their return game, but i'm convinced it doesn't get any better than a seles return in a tight situation...
