Flutie shows Sharapova the ropes

CARSON, Calif. (AP) Doug Flutie spent some time at training camp tutoring a player who won't be a threat to his job any time soon.

Maria Sharapova, a 16-year-old Russian tennis player, donned shoulder pads and Flutie's jersey before getting some tips from the Chargers quarterback.

They passed the ball several times and Sharapova tossed 20-yard spirals with ease.

The duo then switched equipment and Flutie grabbed a racket to volley with Sharapova, who reached the fourth round at Wimbledon last month.

Flutie promised to attend Sharapova's match Thursday against top-seeded Kim Clijsters at the JPMorgan Chase Open, being held adjacent to the Chargers' camp at the Home Depot Center.

I hope it will make Maria motivated to win tonight! :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Training camp: From Russia, with grunt

Organizers of the women's tennis tournament being held at the Home Depot Center in Carson arranged for Russian teen-age sensation Maria Sharapova to visit the Chargers' practice field following yesterday afternoon's workout. QB Doug Flutie helped the 16-year-old put on a pair of shoulder pads and a No. 7 Chargers jersey and then played catch with her.

Sharapova who plays top-seeded Kim Clijsters tonight wasn't just going through the motions. After one toss of about 20 yards, she let out one of her trademark grunts.

"I have to grunt, sorry," she said.

The two later volleyed a tennis ball before posing side-by-side for photos.

"No fair," Flutie said as he looked up at the 6-foot Sharapova, "with the pads she looks even bigger than me."

Flutie is such an awesome person - off the court as well. He is very involved in charities for children. He really gives a lot of his time back. I hope he takes his son who has Downs Syndrome, I'm sure he'd love to meet Maria!!

I wonder if Maria threw the football like a girl? ;)

She's probably never thrown a football before. I hope she didn't hurt her shoulder. :(

But Maria is funny. As her "I have to grunt, sorry" quip proves! :D

Maria Sharapova is going to be a marketing gem for the WTA Tour! She's a natural at the marketing game. :worship: And I think the well intended but misguided WTA Age Eligibility Rules will be "modified" mainly because the WTA Tour wants Maria to play more tournaments and become a big star as soon as possible.
