Rubin Withdraws from JPMorgan Chase Open
August 06, 2003

LOS ANGELES, Calif. Defending champion Chanda Rubin has withdrawn from the JPMorgan Chase Open because of right shoulder tendonitis.

No. 3 seed Rubin, who was scheduled to play her opening match at the JPMorgan Chase Open on Wednesday, developed pain in her shoulder while practicing Tuesday. She was examined immediately and after consulting with her doctor, has been advised to rest the shoulder.

I was advised by the doctor not to play to prevent further injury and avoid surgery, Rubin said. I was ready to play, but unfortunately, I have to take some time to recover.

Lucky loser Angelique Widjaja has replaced Rubin in the JPMorgan Chase Open singles draw and will play Italys Rita Grande.

Of course Im really disappointed that I cant play, especially because I am defending, Rubin added.

Hurry back, Chanda - get well soon.

(and dang, what's with all these upper-body issues the players are having lately?)

Too bad, Chanda. Now go work on your confidence during the break!

I watched Chanda drill with Nicole Pratt last Sunday morning and noticed that she was taking it very easy when it came to hitting overheads and serves. It didn't surprise me to hear that she had pulled out of the tournament. Her groundies were impressive to watch.
