Alex has had a shoulder problem. But congrats to Viktorya! :D I guess size didn't matter in this match. And twenty two year old Alex might have been traumatized at the prospect of losing to a 14 year old girl playing her second WTA Tour match.

I saw pictures of Vika. She looks so slight.
Her body is going to fill out a lot.
Vika has some future.

I think you're right. I know Alex's shoulder problem is legit, but she wouldn't retire if she were up 6-3 3-3. She just didn't want to face the inevitable. If you look at Alex's record in 2001, she retired in so many matches, probably more than 1/2 the ones she was losing in. This is why I can't stand the girl...

Good point Bradhaw1.

And Viktorya reminds me alot of Maria Sharapova when she was 14. As skinny as can be, but can hit the heck out of the ball.

Alex really needs to dig deep to make something of her career. She's middle aged for women's tennis, and shows no signs of improving. And the young players are having no problem beating her. If Sharapova had gotten hold of Alex today the score would have been even worse!

And I don't like how Krasnoroutskaya used an excuse after Vika beat her. :( And I'm sure Stevenson will do the same. If they were not fit to play they shouldn't have. This is not a grand slam tournament. They shouldn't have played if they were ailing. But Vika made them feel even worse! ;)

Here's to hoping Viktorya has the same aggresive attitude and hunger to win that Maria Sharapova has! :clap2:

As much as Alex has been stinking up the joint with her play...someone of you need to give it a break...if she hadnt pulled out of last weeks tournament with an injury then this thread of "supposed excuses" would have some relevance

I can actually understand Lina's excuse. I'm not justifying it, but it is embarassing for a seasoned pro to lose to a 14yo playing in only her third professional tourney and her first one on the WTA. People made excuses when they lost to a 14yo Hingis as well. Hingis beat then #8 seed Maggie Malleva at the 95 US Open and here was Maggie's comment after the match.

Reporter: Well you said her serve isn't that good and she doesn't have much power, so how did she win? How did the #8 seed lose to a 14 year old?

MM: Because the #8 seed didn't play well.

Give alex a break- she was at 3-3 all in the 2nd set-that scoreline doesn't state her loos was inevitable- maybe she was really injured and coupled with the fact that she withdrew last week from san diego with injury i think it was legit....

Under normal circumstances I would agree but take a look at her results from October 2000-August 2001. She played 18 tournaments in that span and retired in about half of them

October 2000-Quebec City 2nd round
l. Maria Vento 3-6 1-2 ret.

November 2000-Philadelphia 1st round
l. Daniela Hantuchova 3-6 ret.

Jan 2001-Gold Coast qualy 3rd round
l. Lina Krasnouroutskaya 2-6 0-1 ret.

Jan 2001-Sydney 1st round
l. Bianka Lamade 1-6 4-6

Jan 2001 -Aus Open 2nd round
l. Virginia Ruano Pascual 63 57 26

Feb 2001-Oklahama Qtrs
l. Monica Seles 3-6 4-6

Feb 2001-Scottsdale Qualy 3rd round
l. Tina Pisnik 3-6 2-2 ret.

March 2001-Indian wells 1st round
l. Sarah Pitkowski 6-4 4-6 4-6

March 2001-Miami 2nd round
l. Elena Dementieva 2-6 0-2 ret.

April 2001-Amelia Island qualy 1st round
l. Marion Maruska 6-7 0-4 ret.

April 2001-Charleston 2nd round
l. Iva Majoli 1-6 3-6

May 2001-RG 1st round
l. Daniela Hantuchova 3-6 3-6

June 2001-Birmingham 2nd round
l. Nathalie Tauziat 3-6 3-6

June 2001-Eastbourne qualy 2nd round
l. Evie Dominikovic 7-6 4-6 3-6

June 2001 Wimby 2nd round
l. Silvia Farina 3-6 2-6

July 2001-San Diego 3rd round
l. Martina Hingis 1-6 3-6

July 2001-LA 1st round
l. Tamarine Tansugarn 1-6 1-5 ret.

August 2001-New Haven qualy 1st round
l. Abigail Spears 7-6 6-7 1-4 ret.

August 2001-US Open 1st round
l. Babsi Schett 1-6 3-6

So she quit in 8 tournaments out of 19. Notice when she started winning in the indoor season that year, her injuries mysteriously vanished

No  i'm saying people should not automatically assume that she wasn't really injured and withdrew just because she was going to loose- like i said that scoreline doesn't give no real indication that alex was 100% sure to loose- maybe she was really injured and could not continue- just becuase her recent results have been no good doesn't mean everyone should be dissing her and saying she was faking an injury

Wow, I had no idea she retired in so MANY matches. No wonder I dont like her. What a total loser. I cant stand when people retire when they are losing instead of fighting it out til the end, win or lose. It is one thing if you are really hurt, but come on!

I played this guy 2 months ago, and I won the 1st set in a tie breaker. I was down 1-5 in the second, and finally put myself back to gether to bring the score to 4-5, 40-30. BETWEEN points, this guy falls on the ground whaling, saying he injured his leg, and then retires. WHATEVER!! I hate fakers!!

Boy, you haters keep making excuses.

Uh, hello, why would Alexandra retire when it's 3-3 in a set. 4-0 maybe, but 3-3, when she's right in it??

Some of you are pathetic.

She withdrew just last week because of the same injury. Oh no, she must have faked it.

Give me a break. Excuses, excuses.

Injuries do get re-aggravated you know. ;)

I think the excuses are on behalf of the haters. Alexandra has beaten players being match point down, why would she quit here when it's tied in the second. It doesn't make sense.

The only LOGICAL solution is that the shoulder was really bothering her.

Why do people dislike alex sooo much, she's not one of my faves but i can still be respectfull enough to sympathise with her when she's on a bad run or injured just like everyone else is with huntochova and dokic...
The girl made a few rash statements some 4 and half years ago and you lot are still giving her stick- i mean when was the last time she did anything remotely controversial?? years- she's 22 now and learnt from her immature ways in the past and needs to be given some respect and not laughed/ or critzised at every oppurtunity....

CoryAnnAvants#1

Why do people dislike alex sooo much

Oh geez you want me to list all the reasons? :p

1) She's a sore loser. I have never heard her say in any interviews for the 4+ years she has been on tour "she played well." It's always that she is sick or injured or playing poorly or changing something in her game or the ref was awful or the surface or the dildo in her ass, etc etc. She just can't except when she is beaten fair and square.

2) She is a BITCH on court. When she wins, she screams, curtsies to all 4 corners and signs autographs to no end. When she is losing, she is flat out rude to the ballkids, referee and linesmen, people who are being paid to work for her matches. Furthermore, she barely touches her opponents hand after the match if she lost and often doesnt even shake the umpires hand before storming off court seconds after.

3) Her mother. Nuff said.

4) She's a waste of talent. She knows what she has to work for. Hell shes known for over four years. But she refuses to do it. A lot of people on the board (myself included) have issues with unfulfilled potential, especially when they aren't working to get the most out of their game.

5) She is still talking out of her ass about being top 3 and winning Wimbledon, when in fact she played a 25K on grass last year and couldn't even win that. Even with a 9-18 record this year, she still believes she is Gods gift to the tour.

6) Retiring in a shitload of matches due to "injury." I'm sure some of her retirements were legitimate, but retiring when you're down 6-1 5-1 is just pathetic. That's called not being able to accept getting your ass kicked. I saw her play Abigail Spears at the Pilot Pen and she was running her ass off for 2+ hours. Abigail finally was getting momentum in the 3rd and got the double break. Right as that happened, Alex picked up her bags, told the ref she hurt she shoulder and couldnt play as she was leaving, and then walked off. Abigail just stood there completely stunned...

I could name more, but my experience with her at the Pilot Pen is reason enough to dislike her.

2) She has done nothing of note since Wimbledon '99
3) She sucks

5) Did I mention she sucks?

Gowza

TNT96, she may suck but she has reached the final of memphis and had match points to win the title last year and also had a great indoor season last year, yes she may suck (for the 2nd time - intentional) and yes she may have a huge ego and a bad attitude but she does have a lot of talent, and did i mention that she sucks but that doesn't mean she doesn't have talent and that she hasn't had SOME good results.

Gowza

Do you actually follow tennis?

You're nothing but a plain stupid moron.

How she hasn't done nothing but Wimbledon semifinals? Please, if you don't know anything about her or her career stay out of this thread. You obviously know nothing about her...

She sucks? She might be having injuries (but who doesn't in tennis?) and losing matches, but everyone knows when she's on she doesn't suck. She has a great talent, she just doesn't use it. She might have a big ego, but that helps you a lot into a match, so you're wrong again...

This board is full of pathetic people lately

Bradshaw#1, actually that example of her retiring citing injuries.. what's the deal with it?

Do you really think she's afraid of losing? That's funny IMO. I don't think ever a player would retire from a match because she's afraid of losing. Alex had bad losses before, so I don't know why she would do it..

And how can you doubt of someone who was injured last week and tried to play this week? Maybe she's really injured. Again, I think, not only for Alexandra, but for any player, to doubt of their injuries, I mean when they retire from a match its because they don't have conditions to play, so there's no way to doubt of that. You can think she's arrogant, or that she has a bad attitude, but to say that one of your examples to hate her its because she retires during her matches, it's funny...

Her mother hasnt done anything to me personally, but I've been at matches where she has told spectators to "sit down and be quiet" when they are cheering loudly for Alex's opponent. She's always complaining about something. Furthermore, her comments about rampant racism and lesbianism on tour really got to me, as well as a lot of other people. She's quite simply living through her daughter, not to mention one of the biggest ATTENTION WHORES on the planet.
