View Full Version : Can Seles Win the U.S. Open?

SURE! With Serena, Venus, Lindsay, and Jennifer all possible or confirmed injury no-shows, and Kim still unable to clear her throat (maybe Lleyton really is the problem), Justine Henin-Hardenne looms at the only real possible threat in Monica's way: IT'S HER BEST CHANCE SINCE THE STABBING!!!

Would love to see Seles win another Slam, but you need to add her to your list of "all possible or confirmed injury no-shows"

It's a pity she's not 100 % healthy herself. If she's 100 % fit, wich I really hope she will be, she certainly has a chance.

If she was fit I would say yes. Even if she does get fit in time, she'll be seriously out of practice in the big practices. I'm just hoping she has a decent run (if shes playing) and rests more, preparing for a good 2004 (if shes playing!)

BY no means her 'best chance since the stabbing'. Be serious.

First of all, SHE'S injured. But let's assume

a) she can play at least New Haven,

b) she comes back 20 pounds lighter

c) is not on Venus' side of the draw

d) does not face one of the top 7 seeds before the semis

I'm usually the one who's too serious- thought a change of pace was in order... and I'd say 35-40 pounds off, then 4 months of flex/stress muscle conditioning which would add 15 pounds of solid muscle mass, then maybe some speed training, and voila! Seles is back in the top 3!

She doesn't need to be in the top three to win the US Open. Just get to the semis playing as little as possible, preferably against sub-standard opposition. Once she's in the semis, party time.

Great post - I believe Seles can do anything when she is healthy. She is that good. But there is still a good possibility that she might not play of course. It will be interesting for sure, if she plays or not.

It is so frustrating that when so many are out and possibly injured that includes Seles. This would be a great chance for her, especially if she got on the other side of Venus/Justine.

depends on the draw! She has a chance if she doesn't have to challenge a seeded player before holding up the trophee

Not a chance if she is still injured. I wish Monica had had that foot surgery a long time ago. Maybe she would be playing now if she had. At this point, I would put her on the unlikely list for the US Open.

If she wasnt hurt, with some of the players out that are out/amy be out you really never know what could happen with the draw.. but the way things are looking now, its unlikely. I really think she should call it a year and come back next year healthy.......

Miss ya Monica!

all i got to say is that monica has a better chance against venus than she does against serena. saying that she has been injured for a long time and lack of match play is always a problem.

Herein lies the crux of the problem. If she is considerably healthier than what we suspect, she does have a great chance.

Hobbling on one leg with a bum foot, sedated with painkillers and other medical drugs to relieve pain, overweight for an athlete, pondering retirement, she still has a better chance than Alicia Molik or any other Australian.

Seles is not as good as she used to be so chancees are no other players could beta her on their ways e.g

Sharapova
Petrova
Pisolesi
Myskina
Dementieva

And many more of the hard court specialists

Yes, she can. Unless there is a rule against Monica winning the tournament then she can win. Will she? Who knows? I can dream that she comes back fully healthy, but I don't see that happening. If she showed up like the 2002 Aus, I don't think anyone could discount her chances.

Does she have a shot? Every player in the draw has a shot. Monica hasn't been fit since she cameback in 95, and has aborted all attempts at reaching that goal. She's playing because she loves the game.

seles has all those girls' numbers (barring petrova), and they know it. they aren't about to squeak out a win against monica in a slam-- SORRY! i personally feel sorry for petrova if she ever has to play a healthy monica... hope she does.

as for winning, her chances are bleak. we'll have to see her play. for instance, if she plays a player inside the top 100 RD1 and wins in straight sets (any score), i'd say SURE. but if she's having 3 setters due to rust, she can still go far but definitely but not win.

we'll have to see her play.

if she has a draw like 1 nagyova, 2 majoli, 3 schnyder, 4 hantuchova/dokic, QF jenn, SF kim.... she can do it

It would be nice if I won the lottery tonight too.
