Ok,ok, if you were talking to me, I'll try not to bash Hardenne. I wouldn't pick her as the favorite, never, but I do think she is a contender. I still think when it comes down to it, the finals, the nerves, the Americans, Justine will not win. My pick is Venus, but that is out of hope. If she wins Toronto, I'd say she'll win it, but we'll have to see.

BTW, I think Wertheim is the worst tennis analyst. He spends one year around the tur and thinks he knows everything. If I met him, I'd probably hit him.

Doesn't this guy have an 0-3 record for picking Grand Slam winners for the women? If I am correct, he said that Kim would win the AO (Serena did), Kim would win the FO (Justine did) and Kim or Justine would win Wimbeldon ( Serena did). Now he is picking Justine to win the USO. This can only be good news for Venus because with the media attention off of her, she can concentrate on her game and quitely move through the draw. We know that Justine doesn't like the press and she definitely isn't going to like the added media spotlight once the USO rolls around. Plus we also know that Venus plays much better when she ranked lower than other top players.

Venus is my personal favourite.

I'm also hoping that Monica is back and healthy and will be motivated to squeeze one more slam title out.

I wouldn't mind Kim getting her first slam at USO also.

I would rather Justine not win (to keep tennis exciting...since everyone seems to want different winners. )

media attention is never off Venus, especially when she plays the US Open... the guy is nobody for media to take his words and a really good prediction. Venus IS the favourite.

lol, i take it this guy isnt a Williams fan then.

Anyway, Justine sure isnt the favourite for the US Open.

Venus is very obviously the favourite - ooohh, im so excited that Venus is gonna start collecting slams again!!

My 2 Cents:

1. Kim/Venus

3. Capriati/Davenport/Rubin/Henin-Hardenne

7. Everyone else

He is such an idiot. I don't see Henin beating on the US OPEN hardcourt.

I don't like Wertheim, I often disagree with him and I consider a healthy Venus to be the main favourite to win the US Open.

Said that, we have to be fair and not take Wertheim's prediction out of context, this is the quote

"...Down the road in San Diego, despite the absence of her coach, Carlos Rodriguez, Justine Henin-Hardenne outlasted countrywoman Kim Clijsters in three sets to win the Acura Classic. Given Venus Williams' questionable physical condition and Clijsters' questionable mental state, you have to look seriously at JH-H as the new U.S. Open favorite. ...
"

Notice the give Venus Williams's questionable physical condition and Clijsters' questionable mental state so if Venus was healthy the prediction would probably be different. We don't know how healthy Venus is so it's a question mark. I'd say if Venus is healthy and has enough time to train, she is the favourite hands down, otherwise it's opened and judging by performances so far Justine would be a strong candidate.

Absolutely not. He is completely crazy, Venus would have to be very injured or not play for this to happen. Wertheim, you are the weakest link GOODBYE!! :bolt:

No. Notice he has now stopped picking Kim? That's the time you can pretty much bank on her coming through.

Well, there are only three contenders for the US Open: Justine, Kim, and Venus. Kim is my favorite for sure, but Justine has just proven she is the better overall player. If Kim gets over her mental hurdle she will surely be superior to Henin, but there is no proof Kim will magically become a good match-closer in three weeks.

That leaves Justine and Venus. As good as Venus is, she leaves us no evidence that she is the favorite: No Tier I title in over a year (possibly much longer, I've lost count), no Slam in two years, an abdominal strain, no preparation, and a relatively poor year with only one Tier II to her name. So by default, Henin is the favorite.

My sentimental favourite is Venus Williams

She has just gained a large fanbase here in South Africa after her brave Wimbledon attempt(injury and all).

I think that Jennifer Capriati wants it more then anybody else, i am sure she misses being in the limelight and lifting trophies.

Winning category #1
Justine, Kim,Venus

Winning Category #2
Jennifer, Lindsay

winning category #3
some top 10 player

Justine is NOT the favourite. She might be playing well on hardcourts and stronger than ever physically and mentally, but the US Open courts are very quick and Justine has never even reached the quarters! She's always been overpowered, and I don't see her winning the event. Venus and Kim are the favourites.

Here's my list of favourites:
1. Venus (assuming she's healthy...)
2. Kim (assuming she doesn't wear herself out...)
3. Justine
4. Mauresmo
5. Davenport
6. Capriati

And that's it. Maybe Rubin has a long-shot chance..

The favorites are Venus (depending on her health) Kim and Justine. And if Lindsay miraculously finds some confidence and courage, she could be a contender too.

But people please don't count out of all of them Justine. SHe is a definitely a different player than she was last year and winning the French was a definite boost to her confidence.

I totally agree Jakeev, The faves are definitely Kim, Justine and Venus (but only if 100% fit). I want Justine to win of course so I will support whoever also thinks this, perhaps Wertheim has had a labotomy?

Guys cut the guy some slack. Besided for the record, this year his predictions have been pretty good, with only the French as the exception. I think it all depends on Venusīs health. If sheīs even remotely healthy she will win the Open. Wertheimīs point about Kimīs mental gameīs legit. No way should the wanna-be no.1 of the world be losing to Justine on HARDCOURTS!

i agree with wertheimer. henin-hardenne is the favorite at the moment. if venus actually plays the open, i'd say she would be henin-hardenne's biggest obstacle.

I hate this werheimer lol but you guys can't agree that Justine is one of the favorites!

She just beat the 'one-to-beat' on her less surface ... I think that everything will be decided by the draw. The one who has Venus in her draw will be ulucky because a health Venus can cause some dammage to Kim and Justine. Non of tham has beaten Venus on hard courts I think. I know Justine had a good match in Antwerp but all the others were rather easy wins for Venus.

Maybe Venus won't be totaly fit and after a though match against Kim/Justine she might be tired but also Kim could be tired after all her tournaments.

I think you has to have an eye on Jen also if she gets fit! The level she reached in the final in Stanford was great!

Chanda is the OBVIOUS favorite. Venus is a very distant #2 fave. Then the rest of the top 8 are all lumped together as the #3 faves.
