I was kind of suprised when she decided to represent Puerto Rico earlier this year. What made her change? I am thrilled to see this former top 30 player find her form. She is on a roll on the challenger circuit, and I hope she will be able to duplicate success as she enters WTA tournaments. Is she at 115?

I think she switched nationalities because of the Olympics. I think she wants to play them enxt year, and she had no chance with the USA.

But then, she is a Puerto Rican native.

Cool, I didn't even know she had changed her nationality. Good luck to her!

gigi fernandez represented it in her early career too I believe but then she realized she had not chance to win a medal in singles and there was no other player in doubles so she switched to become american and won cold twice with mary joe.

JollyRodger - I decided to bump this post up, so I can too find out the connection. Good to put the (tennis!) in there, because I am sure someone would say they were lovers at one point.

Well, they've both worn Fancy Pants. :)

But I assume you're refering to the fact that Kristina's uncle, Andy Brandi, coached the U of Florida tennis team Lisa played for.

I think when Gigi was still playing for Puerto Rico she was still ranked higher than Kristina when she chose to play for PR.

Oh so Kristina plays for Puerto Rico for the Olympics and ppl are praising her going - "Good on ya Kristina!" - ... but when Jelena wants to change to AUS to play for the Olympics its a big deal??

Puerto Rico is the part of America so, people understand why she want to change.

Yes but Jelena never wanted to leave Australia in the first place and Im sure she would go back if not for the public backlash etc she 'thinks' she would recieve. She prob feels it would be far easier just to play for herself which is wat she is doing, I don't think she really feels she plays for Yugoslavia anymore after wat happened with her family.

Then coming to Australia for tournaments first then we will welcome her.

Kristina's father was Gigi's doctor. When Kristina wanted to play pro tennis, Gigi returned the favour by supporting her financially.

Kristina's uncle Andi Brandi is the coach of the Florida University tennis team where Lisa played for. I met Andy this year in Eastbourne. He was traveling with Lisa, but I'm not sure if he is her new full time coach. Lisa told me during the practice that she is working with her old coach again.

Well, it is good to see her rise. Maybe she can win a medal at the Olympics, or at least have a good showing. She has a funky game, right?

Andy retired from Florida a couple of years ago. It would be nice 2C him tutor pro's, though Lisa is approaching the end of the line @ (29?). BTW, re. college coaches: Pistol Pete's Sister Stella (say THAT 4 times fast!) is the head women's coach of UCLA. And the head coach of Shonda's junior program, Jerry Simmons, had that job @ LSU (Louisiana State, all you fur'ners!) for 17 years.
