View Full Version : Bashing with quotes to back it up.

So often we get bashing on this board about this player being this or that, but rarely especially when people bash Venus, can they back up thier claims w/a quote. For example I've read countless post claiming the sisters(Venus and Serena) trash thier opponents, but have yet to see Venus quoted.

Example

"Maybe it's because of a lack of formal education" Serena Williams dogging out Martina Hingis

Venus... "????????????"

Don't hold your breath, Da forehand. Venus does not have time for petty shit.

Those who lump Venus and Serena together probably; can't tell the difference between the two(you know what that means), are too lazy to make the distinction, or they just don't care.

Dava, is that considered bashing? And who was that comment directed to? I'd be interested to know what prompted Venus to say that.

Well it sort of makes sense. It's like the Queen of England right? She is always composed, and regal and polite. If people ask the Queen of England: Is your Majesty comfortable? She won't say: yeah, I'm chilling !! She'll say: But of course.

Well, Venus is the Queen of tennis. She is polite and sticks to the protocol: no bashing. ;) And people bow to her. :worship:

Erm beating Lucic 6-0 6-0, but still you know to say someones a good player, when lets face it... I remember watching the PC and she said it very sarcastically.

C'mon irma, you disappoint me. Venus said Steffi's game isn't really a "grasscourt" game.

About the one sleeve thing she said something to the effect that that had been done some summers ago.

venus doesn't bash her opponents in public even against spirlea she said "if that's her opinion" but she still got the blame for the comments richard made

"I think she a god player if she was given an opportunity to get into a match, but with me on court there is no opportunity."

You make her sound bitchy.

This is the exact quote:

I think that she's actually a good player, and if given the opportunity, she will get herself into the match. I wasn't especially keen on giving her those opportunities today.

Just as I thought nobody would be able to find a quote of Venus trashing her fellow players.

This thread isn't just about Venus, or Serena, bash any player you like based on quotes attributed to them.

Yes but you said at the top of this thread you have seen countless posts saying that the sisters trash their opponents. Can you find a quote of someone actually saying Venus trash talks about opponents? It is obvious Venus does not do that, but are there really countless posters who says she does?

I'll assum English isn't your first language.

If they state that the Williams Sisters(<-plural) trash talk opponents, t hen they are implying that Serena and Venus trash talk.

OK then where are these countless posts saying Venus and Serena trash talk? I only basing it on what I quoted from you in your earlier post - 'Just as I thought no one would be able to find a quote of Venus trashing her fellow players.' but where are the posts saying she does do it? We have found one or two Serena trash talking, but where are the countless people claiming Venus does it? or the Williams sisters as a whole trash talk? And english is my first language, thats why I know assume is spelt with an 'e' at the end.

Venus to my knowledge has never say anything directly mean about any player that I can think of in her career.

But like Linsday or Monica, if Venus says just one thing a little critical about someone or something right away somebody has the need to say, "See I told you so."

Frankly, I think the players need to just be who they are. If we don't like it it's our problem.

It's because of the personalities in women's tennis that makes the most popular sport for women in the world.

I bet if women's tennis was in danger of ceasing to exist, just like women's bowling is right now, we would not be caring about who has said what about another player.

In an early-round match at the French, the 6'1", 168-pound Venus Williams blasted one of her nearly 120 mph serves past Ai Sugiyama (5'4", 115), who protested she wasn't ready and was granted a re-play. Williams stared, glared, seemed to say something (which apparently was: "You ready NOW?" according to a courtside photographer), then blasted an even faster delivery by her helpless opponent.

Venus isn't as quite as outspoken as she used to be. But if you push her she will set the record straight.

Hingis/Venus trading blows:

Venus Williams (after losing 6-3, 6-4 in the French quarterfinals to Hingis, who disputed several line calls): ""It's her custom to dispute calls." Hingis: ""Yeah, it's my custom when she is standing there saying, O This is out, ` and it was, like, right on the line."

Kournikova not giving credit to Venus:

Kournikova (after losing to Venus in the Lipton final 2-6, 6-4, 6-1): "This gives me some confidence that I could play better. She didn't beat me. I lost. It's good she didn't really beat me because I made all the mistakes, right?"

Hingis brings Pam Shriver down to earth(I love this one!!)

"Martina's not selective. She's universal with her lip; she dishes it out to everybody just about the same. I didn't mind before when I told her I was once ranked No. 3 in the world and she said, `You? No. 3?' like I was some Martian."

Venus predicts the future:

."Early on Venus announced that her main rival for No. 1 would not be the current champ, Hingis, but her sister. "She speaks the truth," Serena said recently in Paris. "What? Did you want Venus to lie?"

^^^^^^^
Love this response from Serena.

Anna and Hingis get downright diiirty!!

1As a courtside aside, the Hingis-Kournikova humble-off has been something to behold. In the past, the Russian-born Kournikova mocked Hingis' changing hair colors -- her recent peculiar jet-black hairnet `do resembles the hair-netted waitress at your local diner -- and still obvious baby fat. "Anna has never idolized anybody. She's her own idol," says Nick Bollettieri, the coaching guru who started out with Kournikova but now serves as an "adviser" to the Williams sisters.

Hingis has said she is positive "Anna would like to change places with me and win four Grand Slam titles." In May in Berlin, when Kournikova upset Hingis for the first time in five meetings, the loser ridiculed the outcome. Hingis said she'd have "lost to anybody that day." And she told the Swiss press she only played Berlin because her mother forced her to, that she didn't care whether she won or lost and that Kournikova's victory "didn't count."

AHHH.... The good old days of trash talking tennis on the WTA. Wasn't tennis so much better then?? History is repeating itself very quickly in 2003 and beyond.

Well there are none are there ?

In the early days of her career, Venus got more stick for what she didn't say rather than what she did. She would win high profile matches and just talk about herself and her game from what I remember. Certainly she would never insult them.

At that time lot of people felt that she ought to have given more 'credit' - for the lack of a better word - to her opponents. By not really mentioning them or evading talking about them directly it was felt that she was not really acknowledging that there was an opponent there against her.

I have to say that that is really going a long way back though to when she was a teenage prodigy. She has grown up a lot. These days she still talks about her game, but never really avoids acknowledging the ability of her opponents when questioned.

She very gracioud indeed, but then really who would expect anything less of a true champion.

I should add though that the media seemed to continually bait her into saying something nasty.

Perhaps she had to sidestep them as a defence.

hello all!!

c the thing is about the williams sisters is that they do not actually "bash" their opponents but act superior to them...like they r the best people in the world...but i couldnt be bothered finding quotes so i guess this post is irrelevant then?

:)

but i seem to recall an irina spirlea incident where spirlea screamed at the press conference... "she thinks she is the fucking venus williams" lol :haha:

That is the way I have always looked at Venus. To some extent, I am like that. I hate snobbish people, so when I'm in their midst, I always out-snob them ;) if there is any such thing, and inevitably they feel belittled and hate it. That which they want to do to everyone else, they dont want done to them.

Very many times, those rich pretty girls have often asked who I think I am, and I have always countered that I dont think, I KNOW WHO IAM!
That could have been how Venus particularly felt when she first got on tour, and Serena just took it from there. If anyone could trash talk, I can see it being Serena!
