I'm pretty sure Webb is retiring at the US Open and plans to play there...

I think Schwartz is committed to a challenger in August so I don't see why she wouldn't play here. Her name is on the commitment list for the qulalies I believe.

What about Amy Frazier ? Didn't she say that last year's US Open would be her last ? But she's on the commitments list, isn't she ?

I don't think Amy said last year US Open would be her last. It was said by a poster, not Amy.

It was said by Amy to me. I saw her on Day 1 last year and talked to her for a bit and she said she was going to quit because she was unhappy with her results. I guess after getting to the 4th round of the US Open and the semis in Japan after (giving Serena a major scare along the way), she decided to stick around for a bit.

Just a quick additional note on Amy Frazier: this is gonna be her 17th consecutive year playing singles at the Open. That's not a record, but it's pretty amazing.

I hope so, becasue I was alerted to something on the USO website under the Women's Singles draw that indicated that Venus will probably withdraw and this is what I saw:

We will have a new Champion at the 2003 US Open. Many think Kim Clijsters or Justine Henin-Hardenne are the favorites, but you know Jennifer Capriati, Amelie Mauresmo and Lindsay Davenport will be heard from. What will the roads to glory look like for these superstars? What challengers will stand in their way?

Venus is a two time former champion. Why would they not mention her if she was definitely going to be there?

Well Lindsay is also a former champion so I don't think there is any reason to worry.

I understand that, but Lindsay was mentioned, Venus wasn't. But I hope I am just worried over nothing, considerinf as late as Thursday, Venus' agent said that she intended to play the Open.

but the comment "we will have a new champion" makes no sense when Linday could win it and there NOT being a new one.

Why are US reporters so bad? They never get anything right.

I'm glad Brie has a following here. The daughter of ex-Stanford men's captain Rob Rippner tore up her ankle in Oz back in '01, has tried a couple of comebacks since, but was never the same. :(

I noticed it too.
The only thing that makes sense is that even though Mr.Fleming has stated venus intends to play, the USO organizers are unaware of the status of her injury and if she does play how effective will she be.

I think they were just being cautious because there is still time for Venus to pull out and since neither venus or serena have made direct public statements as to the status of their health, the USO organizers are just playing it by ear and not mentioning Venus. But should she play(which i think is definitely yes) of course she'll definitely be a contendor and if she does well in the first couple of rounds, she'll be the favorite.
