By Dean Goodman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "American Wedding," the third film in the "American Pie" comedy franchise, took the cake at the North American box office in its first weekend, while Hollywood power couple Jennifer Lopez (news) and Ben Affleck (news) ate humble pie with one of the biggest flops of the summer.

According to studio estimates issued on Sunday, "American Wedding" sold $34.3 million worth of tickets since opening on Aug. 1. Last weekend's champion, the family comedy "Spy Kids 3D: Game Over," slipped to No. 2 with $20.1 million for the three days.

At the other end of the charts, the Lopez-Affleck effort "Gigli" (pronounced Jhee-lee), pulled in just $3.8 million, tying at No. 7 with the blockbuster cartoon "Finding Nemo."

Perhaps disproving the adage that no publicity is bad publicity, the marketing for the $54 million-budgeted "Gigli" was hobbled by breathless media coverage of the couple's glamorous real-life exploits, said Tom Sherak, a principal at the film's producer, Revolution Studios.

"We couldn't separate the movie from their real lives," he said. "You don't look at them as actors in this movie. You look at them as Jen and Ben."

Lopez, also known as J.Lo, plays a lesbian crook who helps Affleck's dim-witted character in a kidnapping plot. The film, directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Martin Brest ("Scent of a Woman"), was distributed by Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news) (news - web sites)'s Columbia Pictures, where privately held Revolution is based.

Critics have savaged "Gigli." The New York Times dismissed it as a "hopelessly misconceived exercise in celebrity self-worship," while the Washington Post said it was "enervated, torpid, slack, dreary and, oh yes, nasty, brutish and long."

PROFITABLE 'WEDDING'

"American Wedding," which cost about $55 million to make, will be hugely profitable for Universal Pictures, said Nikki Rocco, president of distribution at the Vivendi Universal SA -owned studio.

With many of the stars from the first two films absent from the new lineup, the film's opening fell short of the $45.1 million bow of "American Pie 2" in 2001. But it did beat the $18.7 million tally for the first outing in 1999. Jason Biggs (news) and Alyson Hannigan (news) star as the couple whose trip to the altar is accompanied by multiple "gross-out" gags.

Jesse Dylan, a son of folk-rock singer and composer Bob Dylan (news), directed.

"Spy Kids 3D: Game Over," featuring a villainous turn from fading star Sylvester Stallone (news), has earned $69 million after two weekends. The film, directed by Robert Rodriguez (news), is on track to surpass its predecessors. "Spy Kids" made $113 million in 2001, while "Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams" finished with $86 million in 2002.

Rounding out the top five were Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" at No. 3 with $19.1 million, followed by Universal's "Seabiscuit" with $17.5 million and Sony's "Bad Boys II" with $12.7 million.

"Pirates," a buccaneer adventure starring Johnny Depp (news), sailed to $209.8 million after four weekends. "Seabiscuit," featuring Tobey Maguire (news) in the fact-based drama about a race horse, galloped to $49 million after two weekends. "Bad Boys II," reuniting Martin Lawrence (news) and Will Smith (news) as Miami cops, has seized $111.3 million after three weekends, easily eclipsing the $66 million total of its 1995 predecessor.

Maybe now that the 2 of them know that their fake relationship for publicity can't buy a successful movie, perhaps they'll put us out of our collective miseries and find other "career move" relationships to take up.

And having "American Wedding" do as well as it did is not something to be thrilled with. Let's keep it our little secret. ;)

The movie cost $54 mill to make.

They really are media hounds. I watch that Project Greenlight on HBO. Ben hasn't been to the set once and when he does show up guess whose on his arm. Yes, J.Lo. Like she goes with him to work when the cameras aren't rolling.

Yeah, the movie looks terrible. I can't even pronounce the damn name!!!

I think it's overexposure and confusion. No one knows what the hell this movie is about. It's pretty pathetic that it did so bad. You would think that the publicity stunts would help even a little bit, but it probably would've done better if there was no hype around it at all. And with a different name. Something people can pronounce.

she was definitely not into talking to that screenwriter at all. she kept swinging her body bck and forth like a lil girl! i used to do that all the time when i was bored. then she walked away mid conversation, without even saying bye until erica said it was nice talking to you.

shia has something special about him. hes soooo adorable, and last nights show, when he was talking about what he did to the ladies after his and amys kiss, his reaction was too cute. like they said, he seems vulnerable and confident at the same time. i guess the whole acting thing has made him mature cos he doesnt seem like any 16 year old that i know.

The two people who are laughing about Gigli right now are Halle Berry (who was supposed to be in this movie, but the filming of X-Men 2 went over and she had to give up the role) and Cris Judd, who is probably happy to be rid of this no talent.

Yes Shai is adorable and funny! When he said he knew he was going to get those panties. I almost fell out of my chair laughing. You could tell how much of a better actor he was than that girl they had him playing against. She's not that good.

Those two directors are too "over" the top. Can't you see success going to that lead guys head and him being a total bitch if it were to ever happen.

I was hoping this would be a joke, since Halle, though the movie was beyond bad, won an Oscar for Monster's Ball. The only award that J-No will be getting for her acting is a Golden Rasberry.

And the editing was bad. Too many artsy camera angles and shadowing.

I think (and hope) that this reviewer at imdb is being ironic:

Possibly the Greatest Film Ever!

Oh man, I cannot get over how good this film was. Unbelievable! J-Lo was at her hottest and dramatic best. As for Affleck, this was 10X better than "Good Will Hunting." Throw in some cameos from Academy Award winners Al Pacino and Christopher Walken, hey, you have what we call in the industry, an epic movie. Although the story deals with hitmen and hitwomen (excuse me, Jennifer), there is also a real human element here. The film can be funny in one instant and then, one of the saddest movies you have ever seen. I think that is what makes for good drama, to be able to balance so many emotions and still tell an important story. I will be honest, I laughed quite a bit during this movie, but I cried more. I cried like a baby, because the chemistry of Ben and J-Lo was that damn good. I know it is early to start talking Academy, but it must be addressed. I really have to admonish the studio for releasing this film now, it should have had a winter or Spring release, so as to be fresh on the mind of Oscar. However, I don't think Oscar will soon forget this magical motion picture. Do yourself a favor and see it, do yourself a bigger favor and see it again. Citizen Kane, you now have a rival!

Hate American Pie and J Lo and Ben. Havenít seen AP 2 or 3 or that Maid in Manhattan crap. I donít care about their careers or relationship. Iím even more tired of J lo whoís now taking the Jenny from the block out of her song. She says that she now knows that sheís not from the block anymore. We all knew that you fake. I just wish both would get played out so that when I change the channel I donít have to see what their schedule is for the week.

Canít believe Halle thought about even doing that movie with itís bad writing. Halle has a angel watching over her career. I wish she had one over the men she chooses. I guess none of us can have everything. Only some can come real close.

Oh and the Cell was a bad movie and I wasnít surprised that Jee-Lee did bad. I was just hoping that I was right. It did worst than I thought it would

Yall stop hating on Jlo. LOL

But I'm glad gigli bombed, because the Ben and Jen thing was sooooo played out. I got sick of hearing about them, and I guess america agreed. They won't do this again.

But even though, I dislike everything about Jenny from the block you have to say she's a survivor. I was watching a vh1 special about jlo, and don't you know she makes so much money off her clothing line, and fragrance, included with her movies, and her records. It's sad, but she is paid.

I guess it's all about drive, and maybe that's something she has whereas others who have the TALENT don't believe in themselves. But I always wonder why the people with the real talent never gets a break? I answer myself and this is what I come up with:

1.They are too fat, too ugly(non-eurocentric features)
2. Too passive, non aggressive
3. Not outgoing
4.Not confident

It's funny because it always seems like the less talented person always have the highest confidence in their singing abilities.

Example- Ashanti, Jlo, total etc.

J.Lo Shrugs Off Affleck's Night Out at Strip Club
Wed Aug 6, 4:48 PM ET Add Entertainment - Reuters to My Yahoo!

By Steve Gorman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Their movie flopped big time at the box office and the National Enquirer ran an X-rated story about his visit to a strip club. But J. Lo is standing by her man.

Singer-actress Jennifer Lopez (news) was aware that husband-to-be and "Gigli" co-star Ben Affleck (news) had patronized a strip club in Vancouver, British Columbia, last month, but shrugged off the whole episode, sources close to the couple told Reuters on Wednesday.

The sources also dismissed reports in British newspapers that Lopez, 33, had dumped Affleck, 30.

"They're completely together," one source said. "She knew he went to the strip club ... and her attitude is: 'What's the big deal?' Moving on."

Another source denied tabloid reports that Affleck had engaged in any errant behavior with the strippers, saying only, "Nothing happened beyond him going to a strip club."

Reports that Affleck had gone without Lopez to Brandi's Exotic Nightclub in Vancouver first surfaced in a lurid article published by the National Enquirer tabloid last week.

The magazine Us Weekly followed that story with a report of its own this week quoting Ryan Haddon, the wife of actor Christian Slater (news), as saying they and actress Tara Reid (news) had joined Affleck at the club on July 17, the same night a tape was shown of he and Lopez together on "Dateline NBC" talking about their movie and real-life romance.

Haddon told the magazine their entourage, including several strippers, also returned to Slater's rented home for a private after-hours party. But contrary to the Enquirer report, Haddon said Affleck was a model of fidelity during the entire evening.

"Ben did not cheat," she was quoted as saying. "He did not have sex with anyone. Ben was listening to music, hanging out, talking to people, that's it."

Lopez is certainly no stranger to men in tabloid trouble. She split from her then-longtime boyfriend, rap impresario Sean 'P. Diddy" Combs, during his much publicized trial in New York on weapons and bribery charges in connection with a nightclub shooting. Combs was later acquitted.

Reports of Affleck's evening out have generated international headlines in the wake of overwhelmingly scathing reviews of their movie, "Gigli," a box office flop that grossed a meager $3.8 million its first weekend in release.
