After being plagued by early round defeats, dissapointing efforts, and a slip in the rankings Thailand Tami Sugarn made a step forward on the comeback trail. "It feels great just to have won two matches in a row. I know trying to defeat Larisa will be a difficult feat, but I'll just try my best. I've already had a good week for myself."

Jane Wong not confident but ready to fight against Lucia Kurkova
Jane Wong said that she is not confident about her match against Lucia
'She is a great player, she is the defending champ, it will be so hard to beat her.'
'I had an mediocre hard court season so far, and I am not happy with it, I have been training a lot with my serve recently, need to get it more reliable, I hope I can adjust it in time for US Open.'
'Lucia is an incredible player, I am sure it will be in stadium court and I hope I can give her a good match, she is not the seed, but I think she is the favourite.'

Angry Noventz blows out and loses point
LOS ANGELES - The match between Poland's Ginana Adriana Dulko and Cuba's Gisele Noventz during the first round of Los Angeles was without doubts the best and more tense match in the first round.
During the third set, Noventz trailed 3-2 and some Dulko fans were behind her hissling and disturbing the player. When Dulko served, Noventz got the ball and then turned back and tried to hit them with it, who started to argue with the fans.
Noventz' attitude shocked the whole stadium who immediately started to boo the player who then got a warning. Noventz didn't agree and started to complain with the umpire. Dulko speechless watched the whole arguement.
Noventz was on screams with the umpire who wasn't patient and gave the game to Dulko. Then she stopped and went back to the match clearly upset and mad with the umpire and the crowd just hitting on the spot. Applauses for Noventz' errors and Dulko winners, and boos for Noventz' points.
"They didn't know what happened." said Noventz.
"Unfortunely I was the victim there. They didn't give a damn about it. I lost a game, she got the crowd and the match." completed.
The match started to get tougher as it seemed. Noventz got back and started to hit winners everywhere, but Dulko was lucky that day and stronger mentally, closed the match.
"I feel I could've get it. It was really close, and I really felt it was a little bit on my side." said Noventz.
"The crowd was heavy. I was really strong to tie everything. It could've been more easily, but I bravely fought."
This puts an end at Noventz' run in Los Angeles, since she also lost a tight match with partner, Anna Kroulikova from Russia. Gisele is playing Toronto's qualifyings.
Q: Eva, you're a former finalist here, did you have higher expectations coming into this tournament?
A: I enjoy this tournament, I did reach the final here 2 years ago, but overall I haven't really had the success I've hoped to achieve here. I don't think my expectations were too high, I reached the final of San Diego last year and then came here with the same result as this time around, so it's hard to really say that I had any set expectations for myself as far as what round I wanetd to reach or whatever.
Q: You seem to have had somewhat of an up and down year so far, some patchy results especially with situations where you've had byes in the opening round - Is this a disadvantage for you?
A: It can be, definitely. Your opponent has already had a match under their belt, so they have a good feel of the courts, and it's almost like a bit of a head start. This week though, it was always going to be tough. Physically I needed that bye because I played a lot of tough matches last week, and I've been playing a lot of matches recently in general so I think today was always going to be an uphill battle.
Q: You've faced Kroulikova several times this year, recently in Stanford on hardcourts, what was the difference in today's match?
A: There wasn't really much different in today's match as the last encounter, I knew what to expect from her game by now certainly. I think she is still trying to find her better form on the hardcourts right now, but she is a momentum player, when she gets going and she gets more confident it really reflects in her game. I think the key today was more in my own play, there were some opportunities there, but I just wasn't quite as sharp in those moments as I needed to be, but I have been on the tour for a long time now and you have to expect that that is part of the game and you just move on and can't get down on yourself over it. You can't be 100% with every match.
Q: What do you say to yourself after this performance? Coming here on a high, and then probably not doing as well as you hoped.
A: I just look for the positives and today I didn't feel like I played a terribly bad match, there were just those few points in a match where you have your chances and you have to really stay focused and prepared to take them, and this time I didn't. Next week I will try even harder.
Q: Still in the doubles event, it's been a bit a while since you've had any doubles titles, what are you aiming for with each match right now?
A: We haven't been 100% each week with our doubles this year, it's hard mentally and physically to do that in both singles and doubles and only a small few are capable of it. I am feeling good about my game though right now, and two weeks ago we were in the Stanford final so I think we are on the right track heading into the US Open. We will play Huubere and Sarile in the semis, they've had a bit of a rough year together but they had a great win last round and they are both very capable players in singles and doubles and we won't take them lightly by any means.
Q: Thanks Eva.
A: Thanks.

Interview with Sabine Graf – recorded by ARD (German television)
Q: Sabine, you lost in the qualification of a tournament for the third time in a row. What happened to your game? Your last victory was in Wimbledon on grass.
A: Nothing, I do not think, my game was bad. I lost to strong and tough players in the last three weeks. They played better and they won this match. To play the qualification in a tournament was something strange in my opinion. But I talked to the FWTT director Mr. Alejandro about this problem.
Q: A problem, tell us something about it.
A: Well, I am the 20th in the official FWTT rankings and I have to play the qualification, I do not think it is great, cause there are over 100 players in the rankings and I think we have to change the number of entries in the maindraw. The top four got everytime a bye in the first round and there are also some strange wildcard in the last tournaments. I hope this will change next year.
Q: What wildcard?
A: For example Bryanne Applegate from the United States got in San Diego, Stanford and Los Angeles a maindraw entry, other players with better rankings had to qualify for this tournaments. I do not think it is a great idea to give a US lady everytime a WC because the tournament is played in America. Will she get a wildcard for the Chase Championships, too?
Q: You are angry about this situation?
A: Yes, of course - I do not think this is the right decision. This have to change, too next year. In Leipzig or Filderstadt – I will get a WC for the maindraw for sure, if not then I will boycott the tour..
Q: Selima Valentine withdrew from Toronto and New Haven yesterday, do you know her reasons?
A: No, unfortunately not. Last time I talked to her was in Leipzig after our Fed Cup match against Belgium, but then she said to me she will go on vacations. But I do not know why she withdrew form this tournaments.
Q: We talked about your singles loss in the last weeks, but what is your aim for this year?
A: At the beginning of the year, I said to my husband I will try to play the Chase Championships in singles and doubles this year and I hope to win a tournament on clay. But now I do not think this will happen this year. So I just want to win some matches and in the German tournaments I will try to win a title in singles or doubles.
Q: Please tell us something about your tennis year 2003.
A: Well, it was terrible and gave my a few highlightes. I reached the final in Dubai for the third time in a row. It is one of my favourite tournaments and I reached the semis in Wimbledon. This was a fantastic feeling to be back on the fast grass court. But I had disappointed first round exists, too. In doubles I won a Tier 1 tournament and I reached several semifinals. So I would gave this year a 3 at the moment.
Q: This year you played together with Riana Shamira Zubir form Indonesia. After Marteena Huubere’s vicotry in Wimbledon, she said she will team up with you next year. Is this right?
A: Yes, it is and I am really happy about this situation. You know, last year Selima and I played our last match at the Chase Championships. I looked for a partner and I talked to several players. Marteena, one of my best friends on tour said she would play with Lindsay-Anne Sarille this year. So I had to find someone. Riana and I tried it and now we are playing together, but Riana does not play the same tournaments so it is difficult for us to stay as a team. After my semifinal exit in Wimbledon I talked to Marteena and I asked her if she would like to play with me next year. She accepted and so the fans will see a German Australian team next year.
Q: Thanks Sabine for this interview, we wish you good luck in the next tournaments and we all hope to see you winning again.
A: Thanks so much. Bye

Post-Match Interview
Moderator: Questions for Anna?
Reporter 1: Anna, are you dissapointed about that loss?
AK: Of course! Every losses are dissapointing but especially when you lose in the third set tiebreaker. I feel I played pretty well but I got a little tight in the breaker and when you go down 0-5 against a well-established player like Gianna, you are in trouble.
Reporter 2: You started the year so well reaching at least the 3rd round(or 1/4 finals) in 10 of your first 14 tournament but since the grass season, it was the first time this week that you have won 2 match in a row. Is there any explanation?
AK: To be honnest, I don't know what has not been working like in the first part of the season. I think maybe my quad injury in Rome started the whole thing because it made think more about the injury instead of my game during a match. I was playing carefully, not taking chances like at the beginning of the year not to injure myself again. And when you have something, you don't practice as hard.
Reporter 3: Do you feel like you are back this week?
AK: I'm not playing as well as in the first part of the season, but it's getting there. I've beaten some great players this week(Liashenko and Sorrenta) but the positive thing about today's loss is that I didn't play that bad.
Reporter 4: And what about the doubles?
AK: We lost! Gisele is so concentrated on getting her singles form back that we don't practice a lot. But I'm confident we can do better in the next weeks.
Reporter 4: Is is true that you'll play with Lindsay Sarile next year?
AK: Yes! I'm so excited about that! She is such a great player but she is even a better person. And that is important to me. We also played once this year in Doha and we won the event so I think we will do really well.
Moderator: Our time with Anna is up! Thanks for comming.

GIANNA! :D :D :D :D
"I am so thrilled to have beaten Larissa for the second time in my career and the second time this year! The first set was very tight but I was able to play well and put on the pressure to break and hold and win the set. In the second set, Larissa really played more aggressively and just really dominated the play. Heading into the third, I knew that I would have to step up to the plate if I wanted to win the match. Larissa did the same but I was able to remain composed and win the tiebreak quite easily. I am exstatic to be in the final. I hope to do win the title tomorrow against Adriana and just basically give it my all as usual. I would also like to say something in response to Gisele Noventz's comments regarding our match, Gisele was making obsene gestures to the crowd and to the linespeople and that is why I was so speechless. I did not in any way instigate the crowd to rally against Giselle or to cheer her errors and my winners. I was happy to have them on my side, but of course I was disappointed that they did not treat Giselle with courtesy and respect. I am quite shocked that Giselle would cheer against me publicly but I hold on ill feelings towards her because of that. Thanks. "
