OK, shoot me now, but I just can't listen to that "Smells like teen spirit" song. Yuck! I tried really, really hard. :tape:  Anyone here who likes Nirvana care to explain the popularity? Why do you like it? This song sounds like a lot of noise to me. Please don't just tell me that I need my ears checked, blah-blah-blah. Maybe that sounds lame, but I'm totally serious with this question! Why do you like it : specific criteria? Just one of many questions, actually...

Were you around in the early 90s? I mean, as far as a music devotee? The sound at the time was C&C Music Factory, Paula Abdul, etc. So when this new wave of "grunge" started, it completely changed pop culture in a way that only the Beattles and Elvis had done before.

It was a movement, not a song. And I'm glad to have been around enjoying it! ;)

Around I was. Not as a music devotee. I barely knew of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana back then; and obviously didn't listen to it. So it was enjoyed because it was something radically different, is that what you are saying? It's just that I read "Kurt Cobain this and Kurt Cobain that"; and it leaves me baffled a bit. Is there a particular reason you enjoy Nirvana, Seles?

At that time, there was NOTHING like it. It was a vast departure from the standard music that was being forcefed upon the world. And with my generation angst ridden as it was at the time, it was almost like an anthem to bemoan. Personally, I think Kurt was a lyrical genious. Some of the intricacies of his words are amazing and his style was definately unique.

They opened the door to a new sound, and without them (Nirvana) many bands making music simply would not be.

Nirvana are mainly popular bc they were a big breath of fresh air and had a different sound to what was being produced before, as Seles said. I believe alternative rock and grunge were already around, so they didnt invent it or anything, but they just brought it to the mainstream. They greatly influenced many bands who went on to produce the music we hear today.
I'm not particularly a fan though, i think smells like teen spirit is so boring, but they were pioneers of the music we hear today, kinda like the beatles.

Nirvana are way overrated, but they and this song are still classic. There's so much nervous energy which propels it along, and the contrast between the sparse, bass-driven verses and the explosion of noise in the chorus is quite something. It's been overplayed and I don't see myself actively wanting to listen to it again for quite a while, but it's classic nonetheless.

That said, it did take the Destiny's Child bootleg to get me back into this.

I'm a big fan of music and I listen to all kinds...but I agree with you cellophane, I never understood the excitement over Nirvana. I think it's because I myself was boycotting Top 40 in the late 80s early 90s and I went out of my way to find "different music." Because of that, I discovered there were many other interesting and talented bands to listen to, some still making music after peaking in popularity in the 80s, and others who never made it to the mainstream...Aztec Camera, Crowded House, Matthew Sweet, Robyn Hitchcock, The Go-Betweens, Paul Westerberg/The Replacements, to name a few, and my absolute favorite never-has-been, The Pleasure Thieves. I didn't have to latch on to Nirvana just because they didn't sound like C&C, Paula Abdul and the like.

Anyway, whatever your taste is, there's tons of better stuff than what's being forced down our ears on the radio these days. That stuff is just some big company with lots of investment capital trying to promote what they think they can make into the next big thing, with image being everything. These days you can't just sell music (since no one's buying) but you gotta sell Pepsi and Candies shoes too!!! (Sorry Beyonce and Kelly Clarkson fans)

What I can't understand is the fascination with Kurt Cobain.

Yes, I'd love to know why he is so worshipped.

the lead singer of nirvana was really into his music(some people would kill me for not remembering his name).....which is great and i like people like that.....that actually show something when they perform...people that actually right their music.....u dont get good quality music very often.....but i think that he was a little sick in the head to tell you the truth.....not bad music though.....just different....
