Critics Call Affleck, J Lo. Movie 'Gigli' a Turkey
Wed Jul 30, 3:52 PM ET Add Entertainment - Reuters to My Yahoo!

By Mark Egan

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Call it one of the biggest turkeys of all time.

The romance between Ben Affleck (news) and Jennifer Lopez (news) has captivated the American public, but their first movie together is already being called a low point of cinema history.

If early reviews are anything to go by, the pairing of the real-life love birds in the movie "Gigli" looks set to bomb when it opens at the U.S. box office Friday.

Among its biggest problems is a love scene in which Lopez spreads her legs and tells a smoldering Affleck, "It's turkey time. Gobble, gobble."

Humphrey Bogart (news) and Lauren Bacall (news) it ain't.

"Witless, coarse, and vulgar, 'Gigli' is worse than its advance buzz could have indicated," wrote Fox News critic Roger Friedman. "The film -- if you can call it that -- is a total, mindless disaster."

The New York Post on Wednesday ran a full-page splash blasting the movie. "The 'Gigli' is Up," the paper wrote, adding, "Ben-Jen bomb was made for walking."

Much of the movie features Affleck's efforts to change Lopez' character from being a lesbian into a straight woman. Needless to say, by the time she's saying, "Gobble, gobble," she's changed sides.

The romantic gangster film pairs a couple who have been almost omnipresent in U.S. tabloids for months and who have been touted as among the sexiest people in the world.

While their romance was said to have been originally sparked with the shooting of "Gigli," critics see little of that spark in the movie. Critics have compared the film to such box office flops as Madonna (news - web sites)'s "Swept Away," Mariah Carey (news)'s "Glitter" and Britney Spears (news) vehicle "Crossroads."

"From 'Gigli's' first test screenings, where writer-director Martin Brest clashed with Revolution studio chief Joe Roth over the film's final act and pace, to the film's poster, which allegedly featured a retouched version of Lopez's famous derriere (which the studio denies), nearly every step of the film's path to the screen has been chronicled by the Internet, the tabloids and, eventually, the mainstream media," the Los Angeles Times wrote.

"Taken together, 'Gigli' has single-handedly disproved the maxim that there's no such thing as bad publicity."

I agree that Jennifer Lopez has some identity issues, she thinks she's Julia Roberts! LOL

but I agree with DL, The Cell was an interesting movie if not good. However, those choices are way behind J.Lo she's on another mission. :(

Jersey Girl is directed by Kevin Smith right? The creater of: Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.... If so, it will at least be funny. Assuming they put Jay and Bob in it.

But I think Gigli looked shitty from the first time I saw the previews... Nothing I'd pay to watch.

On the other hand, as pathetic as it sounds.. I will be going and paying to see "Freddy vs. Jason" on Aug 15th

Well that's much fuller than my weekend. Friday, I don't work so its take my car to get some new brakes and then take a stray dog we are caring for to the vet. She's all white but her fur is falling out and she has sores. Then hopefully a nap.

Saturday wake up late, clean and nap

Sunday wake up late, clean and well you get the hint. ;)

I'll probably watch 4 or more DVD's this weekend. Hopefully go see Bad Boys II. So yes I like to waste my money too!

I know all white animals are often times hard to get to live. I had a cat, she was solid white: blind in one eye and deaf... Poor thing, I loved it so much... but it was constantly sick.

Still, I dunno, trips with my ex, are about as much fun as pulling teeth... I get annoyed at her telling me how miserable she is since we broke up.

Then again in the middle of no where, they can't charge us much for movies. :o

I live in the fucking middle of no where in VA.... On the boarder basically with TN and KY.
Everything is cheap here, because there isn't anything to do. I live an hour away from the nearest club. Hour and a half away from the strip bar. 30 mins is the shitty walmart, 1 hour is the nice walmart. Nearest mall, a little over an hour away.. It sucks. :(

I know I won't be seeing it! Speaking of cheap movie tickets, in Houston if you go to the first show of the day (usually around 12:00) you get in for $3.75 and if you get popcorn, you get as many refills as you want. Buy one small and it feeds 10 people. ;)

It's probably really not so bad of a movie. It's likely moreso that the leads are simply bad actors.

Part of the problem is that the critics are jealous of one of the top actors in the world (Ben Affleck) and one of the most popular actresses/singers in the world (Jennifer Lopez) teaming up on screen and in real life. They want to see them do badly so they can put the screws to them. And J-Lo can act. "Selena" was on VH-1 tonight and she was very believable in that very difficult role.

HA! If they were really jealous the likes of Geoffrey Rush and Russell Crowe would be out of work a long time ago. J-Lo can't sing, like it or not. But that's not a surprise since most of the pop singers that appear on our TV's can't sing anyway. I'm just skeptical of that whole music biz industry altogether.

In film, if you're not good, you'll be shot down. Like what's happening to them now.

Oh Affleck is a decent actor, not by any means a TOP actor. He's ok.

R you sure you don't live in my neck of the woods?? LOL I drive an hour everywhere. We finally got a super Wal-Mart so I don't have to drive for that but

1 hour each way to work
1 hour each way to nearest Mall
1 hour each way to a Nice Movie theatre
1 hour each way to the beach ---Ok that's a positive. :D

but they are building a new cinema! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Now I can spend my $12 for a ticket and popcorn right here at home. :D

Hey maybe I'll work there part-time?? That will save me the price of the movie ticket and I get paid. ;)

Jennifer did a fabulous job in Selena. I think she was able to because at the time she was in touch with who she is, a latina. Now I don't think she is that in touch with reality and can't relay anything in acting anymore. I mean Maid in Manhattan was just bad.

You should see my little dog, she's my pride and joy. She's so spoiled. :)

I go out with my ex, because I pity her. She makes me feel guilty for breaking up with her... and I don't really like any of my other friends enough to put up with them for longer than an hour at a time. Besides, she can drink as much as me, and we both get so drunk we can't remember what the other does.... So no embarrassing stories.
