Worcester said she recently talked to Venus Williams, Martina Hingis, Maria Sharapova and Nicole Vaidisova. All four told her they wouldn't commit now, but that if they didn't feel prepared for the U.S. Open after playing in the Montreal tournament Aug. 14-20, they would consider asking for a wild card into the Pilot Pen.

"There are four players, and they can't all get to the finals at Canada," Worcester said. "So we will all be watching carefully and we will keep in touch.

Since Myskina lost 1r in Cincy and her opportunity to get back into top 10, the rankings get really interesting for Nicole now...

Rankings right now:

9 Mary Pierce 1636
10 Lindsay Davenport 1588
11 Anastasia Myskina 1 1575
12 Nicole Vaidisova 1435
13 Martina Hingis 1396
14 Francesca Schiavone ITA 1336

With a good run in Stanford, Nicole can easily close the gap between her and the top 10. W=195, F=137, SF=88, QF=49 are the pts possible at $600,000 Tier II.

Then the next week is San Diego, which has a loaded field, Mary who won it last year will lose like 300 ranking points. And the latest news from her forum that she is still injured, so she might not play at all! And same for Lindsay, will she come back at a packed Tier I? Myskina isn't on the players list for San Diego right now...

So it looks like Nicole has a great shot of moving up and cracking the top 10 for the first time, if she can go far in both Stanford and San Diego, but Martina's right behind her!

yeah,i think so,i agree with you,it's possible for nicole to win this title,if she keep enough fire, and plays very well in this game,i think that's really possible, but you know,Kim is also a great player, she has good shot, and have lots of experience,if nicole wants to beat her,it will be very hard,so let's hope it will be come true:bounce:

Capitals vs. Explorers at 7:30 pm Pacific time. I guess Nicole will be playing the singles, not sure if she'll be playing the doubles and/or mixed doubles.

The two teams played Friday night and the Caps won. Even though WTT doesn't mean too much, it'd still be nice for Nicole and the team to get another win. :)

PROFILES SKY'S THE LIMIT
NICOLE VAIDISOVA has two things going for her: talent and time.

by Kate Battersby

http://www.deucemagazine.com/images/17_2_400x181_Vaidisova.jpg

Sometimes progress in elite tennis comes in giant leaps, at other times in small steps. A certain wisdom is required to see that each is of equal importance. Such is the case with Nicole Vaidisova, possessor of an astute head on her young shoulders. Fresh from blowing out the candles on her 17th birthday cake, the Czech six-footer is already the owner of six career titles, including a streak of three in a row last autumn that saw her arrive among the top 20 players on the planet. But the world keeps turning, and 2006 is seeing the next stage in her professional evolution.

"Last year was great, and it all came together in the fall," says Vaidisova. "But the closer you get to the Top 10, the more work there is ahead. Moving up even one ranking spot is a test. I'm playing some girls 10 years older than me with that much more match experience. Of course, there's plenty of time. I'm not putting pressure on me; nor is anyone else."

Born in Germany, Vaidisova was introduced to tennis by her mother at age 6, when the family returned to Prague. Although her father also plays recreational tennis, these days Vaidisova is coached by her stepfather, Alex Kodat. She considers her serve her most potent weapon, although the years she spent at the Nick Bollettieri Academy in Florida-beginning at age 11-left their mark with her two-handed backhand.

Just three years after arriving in America, Vaidisova made her debut on the ITF Circuit, where she won her first title in her only event that year, back on home soil in Plzen. But 2004 was her real breakthrough season. Having qualified in Vancouver for only her third Sony Ericsson WTA Tour main draw, she won it and thus became the lowest ranked player (then 180) to win a title that year, and also the sixth youngest singles champion in history.

Vaidisova was held up by a shoulder injury early on, before winning her first career title on clay, in Strasbourg, and making the semifinals at Roland Garros. In her off-hours she has been contributing to the on-court designs she will wear for Reebok in 2007. "I like fashion a lot and this is a great opportunity," she says with a smile. "I will definitely be wearing dresses, not tops and skirts, and they will have crystals and sparkly stuff on them. I'm a real girly girl. My room is decorated in pink."

With such an accomplished résumé, it's difficult to remember that Vaidisova is still a teenager. But professional life must come before the normal teenage pursuits. When asked of her musical tastes, she lists Madonna and The Pussycat Dolls, but says, "I try to go to gigs but it's tough because they usually go on so late. I'm in bed by 10:30 or else I'm a wreck the next day."

But Vaidisova would not have it any other way. "Tennis has given me so much," she says. "Tournaments are still new and exciting for me. My aim is just to keep improving. Then I'll be satisfied."

Vaidisova brings game to Capitals

Sacramento benefits with a dominant win over Kansas City.

She'll be the next star. She'll get major endorsements. She'll attract even the casual sports fan's attention.

That's the hype surrounding Nicole Vaidisova.

The reality, though, is a little different. For now, at least.

So far, the 17-year-old isn't Anna Kournikova or Maria Sharapova, the two female tennis players her handlers/promoters use as a benchmark.

Saturday night, local fans saw Vaidisova help the Capitals to a 24-16 victory over the Kansas City Explorers. The Capitals (9-3), who remain in first place in the Western Conference, have won eight of their last nine matches and clinched a berth in the World TeamTennis playoffs next weekend in Newport Beach.

Sacramento won 5-0 in mixed doubles, the night's first set, and got out to a 17-5 lead.

"That (fast start) helped us a lot," said Sam Warburg, who won his singles match to remain first in the WTT singles rankings. "It just gave us a lot of freedom and helped us relax."

In her lone WTT appearance this summer, Vaidisova beat Caroline Wozniacki 5-3 and teamed with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in a 5-4 loss to Wozniacki and Corina Morariu. Pavlyuchenkova replaced Elena Likhovtseva with the Capitals ahead 3-2.

Vaidisova is a career-high 12th in the world rankings. This year, she reached the French Open semifinals and made the fourth round at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

"It's all come together quite good," said Vaidisova, who played the past two seasons for the Capitals. "Everything's getting 100 percent there. … But I still have to improve."

An announced crowd of 3,479 attended Saturday's match, less than the capacity crowd of approximately 4,300 who watched Pete Sampras and the 4,000-plus fans who saw Kournikova earlier this month.

Why the smaller audience? Maybe because it was a Saturday night or because it was around 100 degrees, which contributed to the stands being less than half-full near the end.

Regardless, Vaidisova's appeal still isn't enough to bring out legions of admirers, but she had fun Saturday. During doubles, Vaidisova hit Pavlyuchenkova and Likhovtseva while returning serves. Both times, she smiled shyly and apologized.

"It's really hot and humid," Vaidisova said. "But it was OK. I definitely enjoyed it. (WTT) is funky."

Many bet her popularity will rise, if she wins a Grand Slam title. Vaidisova already is represented by IMG. She has her own Web site and endorsement deals with Sega, Xbox, Reebok and Yonex.

Vaidisova was scheduled to head to the Bay Area today for this week's Bank of the West Classic at Stanford. The third seed, Vaidisova received a bye in the 28-player draw.

In the past 12 months, Vaidisova has risen 21 spots in the rankings. She wants more.

"She knows what it's like to play a top-10 player now," said Ales Kodat, Vaidisova's stepfather and coach. "Every match gives her a lot of experience. That's what she needs."

That was really great, she often kept smiling and enjoyed fun,i think that's the most important thing to play on WTT,you can have fun there
on WTA,i may not see nicole's smiling, because she has to keep serious and dispassionate, right?

i think nicole is affirmative:lol: when she lost the matches,of course she is sad,but she can get more experience and she often speaks highly of her adversary,i think that's one of the reasons why i like nicole:lol:

Nicole's Player Blog

Hello everyone,

Welcome to my first blog! I'm here at Stanford University for the Bank of the West Classic. It's my first time playing here, and so far, it's pretty cool here.

I got here yesterday afternoon from Sacramento, where I was playing World Team Tennis, which is always a good time. Hanging with Wayne Bryan (father of Mike and Bob Bryan) Lonnie and Ben (the owners of the Sacramento Capitals) and the rest of the team is always fun. WTT is so different from playing on the Tour because you're part of a team. You have your teammates on the court cheering you on, giving you tips, making a lot of noise. The crowd in Sacramento is the best in the WTT league. Always cheering and being loud. On break-points, the croud always yells: "What time is it? BREAK TIME!!" Pretty funny. Anyhow, we won, which was awesome and then it was back on the road on the way to Stanford.

Like I said, I got in Sunday afternoon and checked out the tennis site. I've been to other universities, but this one is very nice. It's huge! And it's great to see so many sports going on. (During the summer, Stanford hosts many youth sports camps for soccer, tennis, rugby, basketball, etc.) I haven't seen the whole campus yet, but maybe I could borrow a golf cart and take a spin around the school.

We went to dinner on University Avenue, which is where all the restaurants are in town. We ate at an Italian place called La Strada. I had a caprese salad and seafood pasta. Pretty good stuff, I must say.

Afterwards, I just wanted to chill out in the hotel. I watched that movie, Something's Gotta Give, and had to unpack all my bags, which I don't really like. That's one of my least favorite things about traveling on the Tour - all the packing and unpacking. It never ends and you always have to worry if your bags are too heavy and whether you're going to be hit with a huge charge at the airport.

This morning, I woke up at 8:45. I am still on Florida time (I live and train at the IMG/Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Bradenton, Florida) and came from Europe two days before that so the jet-lag is still a bit there. But I had a Starbucks breakfast - coffee and a chocolate muffin - breakfast of champions.

Then, back to training - some jogging and exercises with my dad, who's my coach, on the track, which is right by the courts, followed by lunch in the players' lounge. Because of the extreme heat right now in California, they have to turn the lights down in the lounge so that they can keep the air conditioning running and not use up too much power. I must say though that I prefer the Stanford heat over the Sacramento heat. That was like a sauna.

After lunch, back to the hotel for yet another movie - this time, Alien vs. Predator. I know, I know, it's a terrible movie, but for some odd reason, I liked watching it. It's like the smart person in me knows it's a bad movie, and I shouldn't watch it, but the silly person says that it's great. The silly person won.

I had to come back to the tennis site to do All-Access Hour, which are media roundtables that the top seeds do at the start of tournaments. The other players who had to do it with me were Kim Clijsters, Patty Schnyder and Anna-Lena Groenefeld.

Now, I'm off to play my doubles match with Maureen Drake. I'll check in with you all later.

Bye for now!

First and most importantly, I have to say hello to my brother Oliver, who is probably playing golf at home. I'm very proud of my brother because just recently, he became the national champion in golf for his age group in the Czech Republic. It's great that he plays golf because we get to train in the same place at the IMG academies in Bradenton.

I just heard some other good news from my team at Reebok - they signed Scarlett Johansson, which is really exciting. She's a great actress, and I look forward to meeting her. I heard that we might be able to meet up in NYC when I'm there for the US Open in a few weeks.

I guess I should talk about what's going on here in Stanford. It's cooling off here, thank God. I'm excited for tomorrow because I will get to meet Bruno Juniqueira. He's one of the best race car drivers in the world. He's here for the San Jose Grand Prix and apparently is a huge tennis fan and a good player. I figured that we could have a quick hit tomorrow afternoon at Stanford. I could test out his skills on the tennis court and then he can test out my driving skills. Just kidding. I probably won't even fit in the car because the leg room in those cars is so small! But they are bringing a car to the site, and I'll try it out. I think it's going to be pretty funny.

I'm still waiting to play my first singles match, so it's been pretty relaxing so far, just practicing and hanging around watching movies. "Derailed" was the latest one - not at all what I expected. It was pretty dark.

I still haven't gotten the Stanford tour on the golf cart but maybe I'll take a spin in Bruno's car around the campus. That would definitely turn some heads.

Anyhow, I just got back from a sponsor party for the tournament, and I'm starving, so I'm off to dinner. Thanks for reading and I'll talk to you all tomorrow.

Good night!

PRESS RELEASES

BRUNO JUNIQUEIRA VISITS BANK OF THE WEST CLASSIC

...Champ car driver hits with WTA star Nicole Vaidisova

PALO ALTO, Calif. –Champ Car driver Bruno Juniqueira visited the Bank of the West Classic Wednesday morning to hit with French Open semifinalist Nicole Vaidisova and give a tour of an authentic open wheel race car on loan from the San Jose Grand Prix to the rising Sony Ericsson WTA player.

Juniqueira, a member of the six-time Champ Car champion Newman-Haas Racing team, showed he also has some skills on the tennis court during his 15-minute hitting session with the young Czech star.

Following the hitting session Juniqueira gave Vaidisova a Newmann-Hass Racing shirt autographed by himself, teammate Sebastien Bourdais and co-owners Paul Newman and Carl Haas.

Vaidisova then autographed one of her racquets for Juniqueira before checking out the open wheel race car.

Seeded third at the Bank of the West Classic, Vaidisova had an opening round bye and will face Sybille Bammer in second round action on Thursday. The 17-year old has already won six career titles and is ranked 12th in the world.

So, I got to feel like a true race car driver today, and boy, do I have a much higher respect for them now. I knew it was tough but these guys have to be in the best shape. My morning with Bruno Juniqueira, Jan Heylen, another race car driver, and Bruno's sister was probably the highlight of my week so far.

We hung out in the player lounge for a bit. Thank God the lights are back on now that it's cooler and we can use more power, so I could actually see them. Then, it was off to the courts for a friendly hit. But like all professional athletes, there was still the competitive element, and Bruno is definitely competitive. He wasn't holding back, and it wasn't just a light hit and giggle. He has a wicked backhand and I wouldn't turn him down as a mixed doubles partner.

After a friendly game, which by the way, I did win although he gave me a run for my money, I got to check out the car and see what it feels like to drive one. There is NOT a lot of leg room, especially for my long legs. But I did squeeze in there after Bruno took the steering wheel off. I can't believe they don't cramp up in there because there is not a lot of wiggle room. You literally can't move. And Bruno said that it can get up to 140 degrees when they're driving. Geez, I don't think I'm going complain about the heat on court anymore.

Bruno gave me the coolest shirt that was signed by his whole team including Paul Newman. I thought that was so nice of him. He and his friends were really nice and I hope they do well this weekend in the Grand Prix.

Because I gave my brother a hello yesterday, I have to also say hi and congratulations to my physical trainer, David Hogarth, and his wife Jackie. They just had a beautiful baby girl named Emma, and I couldn't be happier for them. David is the best. He's the director of the Bollettieri Sports Medicine Center, and he's responsible for keeping me healthy. He does a great job and I'm very lucky to have him on my team. I'll never forget his visit to Prague after the French Open when I gave him a tour of the city. He was there to help me get ready for Wimbledon. Our tour down Royal Road was unforgettable. I was so happy that he was able to see where I lived and spend time with my family.

Well, now that my short-lived racing career is over, it's back to tennis. I have to play doubles tonight with Maureen Drake but it's going to be a late night because we are the second night match. We play against Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Shahar Peer. Anyhow, I'm going to get some rest before my match, but as always, it's fun chatting with you, and I'll be back tomorrow. I play singles tomorrow night against Sybille Bammer so check it out on live scoring.

See ya!

See ya!
lol, like she was talking to his friends!very nice ;)

Finally! I get to play my first singles match tonight, so today has been pretty mellow - just hanging out in the hotel room between practices and training.

Yesterday, my dad took a tour of the Stanford campus on a golf cart. I was disappointed that I couldn't go, but work called, and I had to get ready for my doubles match. He said that the campus was amazing. They have great facilities, especially for sports, like their own golf course. Tiger Woods played here. Obviously, I have a special interest in golf because of my brother, who is a great golfer. Actually, last week, I got to meet Paula Creamer in Bradenton, which was pretty cool. She also trains at the academy, and it was interesting to hear about what it's like to be a pro golfer. We're pretty close in age and both starting our careers, and it's nice to compare stories.

Anyhow, back to tennis. Sorry, I really didn't do too much today except practice. I was able to try out my new Reeboks. I've been working with the design team to come up with next year's line of clothing and shoes. I know it's early, but it takes a lot of time and work to put these designs together. I didn't realize how much is involved. It's been really fun for me to see the whole process.

Like I said, other than practice, I just relaxed at the hotel. I caught up with some friends in the Czech Republic and Florida, which is always great. Because we travel so much, it's important to stay in touch. Sure, the phone bill is pretty high, but it's worth it. I have to say hi to Yvette Hyndman.

Well, it's getting closer to match time, so I'm going to sign off now. Hopefully, the next time I talk to you, it will be after a win.

Take care!

I'm happy to return to my blog as a semifinalist today. I won late Thursday night, did my press and crashed out as soon as I got back to the hotel. I didn't even watch a movie - shocker!

Woke up early today, had some apple and cinnamon oatmeal for breakfast (no Starbucks today, enter sad face here) and back to courts to get ready for my quarterfinal match this afternoon against Sam Stosur. Practiced a lot of returns today because Sam can serve really well, especially that kicker, and she can serve and volley well.

Spent the rest of my free time at the hotel, checking e-mail. I got to see some pics from my photo shoot with Annie Liebowitz, who is an amazing photographer. It was such an honor to work with her and I'm excited seeing the photos in Vogue China when it comes out in October.

I caught up on the news at home in the Czech Republic - gotta stay updated. Then, back to the site for some lunch - a mozzarella sandwich. I know it's a boring choice but I didn't want to walk on court for my match with a heavy stomach. Definitely not good for running around.

Before my match, just did my usual routine - listened to my iPod, Madonna to be specific. Love her. Great pre-match music. Relaxed with my dad and watched TV in the lounge.

After I won, I did the usual press, including a fun interview with ESPN. If you're in the U.S., keep watching ESPN in the coming weeks. You'll get to see it. Now, I'm off to dinner. I want to check out this funky Japanese restaurant on University Avenue called Miyake. It's a sushi place and at night people start dancing on the tables when the music cranks up. It's hilarious - one moment you're taking a bite of sushi. The next thing you know, someone is dancing on the table next to you and the lights and music are going crazy.

It won't be a late dinner because I play the day match again. I don't know who I'm playing yet, but it will either be Kim Clijsters or Vera Zvonareva. They're on the court right now so I'll check on the score after dinner.

Keep reading and hopefully, my next blog will be after I reach the final.

Talk to you later!

Even if she reaches the final and with her QF points Nicole would have only 1791 points. So I think she would have to win the event.

Well Nicole wore already the white top and the skirt at Stanford / San Diego.

The dress looks pretty much like her Wimbledon dress to me.

I SERIOUSLY hope that she wears something else at US Open and as Nicole is probably Reebok's "headliner", I hope she gets something diff than those clothes, as Reebok isn't really coming out with something new ;)

I would love to see her in pink (I know she wore since last US Open - end of the season, but I seriously don't carer, as I LOVED it) or any other pastell colour, as I think that suits her really well. I doubt she will wear it, but I think turquoise would awesome, she has shown that she looks fabulous in it a couple of times like when she had the photocall in paris earlier this year.

Well, like I said something with pastell colour and like you said NO NO to white, it is seriously getting MORE than boring. I said that already before San Diego if I am right :p .

And PLEASE nothing black or something too dark either. In my opinion, colours "belong" to blonde hair, mostly pastell colours ( I know that I repeated it so often but it is the way it is ;) )

At the very least unequal bronzing...

After the bronzing of cyclists, here that of the tennis players. In spite of her paces of mannequin, the feet of Nicole Vaidisova rather betray long hours of external drive.Who says estival sport said unequal bronzing. The Czech Nicole Vaidisova, 17 years, made of it the demonstration Sunday with the evening of the players of the Rogers cup.
If its bronzed legs reflect the summer, its feet, them, seem in full winter. Apparently, the photo well done to laugh the principal interested yesterday morning, tells Alan Lemay, director with the service of the players of the Rogers cup."I spoke to her about her white feet, she found that funny, but known as that formed part of the trade," adds Mr. Lemay, joined by telephone in the room of the players.
For 18 years, Mr. Lemay has seen others. "All the players of tennis have the white feet, one should perhaps start to have a service of tan spray. Opinion with the sleeping partners!" it added while laughing.

other quote...on the same newspapers
In the absence of Maria Sharapova, the amateurs of tennis will be able to admire the talent - and the legs - of the star rising of female tennis, Nicole Vaidisova, during the Rogers cup.
If we trust the reaction of people and especially young men twisted in edge of the red carpet of the evening of the party players yesterday, the young Czech of 17 years old, number 12 in the rankings, will make turn many heads in the next days at Montreal.

About withdraws of top players in Montreal
Vaidisova, 17 years hardly, but which measures six feet and knocks the ball with an astonishing composure, was harder towards her colleagues of work."It is a question of planning. It is necessary to stop and think of the possibility of reaching the final of a tournament before establishing your calendar. I always sit down with my physio and my father before working out my shedule of tournaments. I envisaged for example not to play in Los Angeles last week because I was registered in Montreal. Until now, I was
victim of no serious wound and I was forced to withdraw from a tournament only one time."Like Hingis and Clijsters, Vaidisova expects a difficult tournament in spite of the withdraws of the top seed." It's not true that only the players belonging to the top five are threatening. Anyone who among the 20 or 30 better players of the world can beat the best, and even the players of top 100 can give you a good match."

Yes I did travel quiet some times. I live most of the time in Belgium, and spent my holidays in Libanon. This has probably been said already but...

Nicole will play China, then4 straight weeks in Moscow, Zurich, Linz, and Hasselt to try and qualify for the YEC. Good chances maybe since they are 4 bigger tournaments where good results at each may get her in. If Clijsters or Henin-Hardenne withdraw then she might get in.

I don't think 4 weeks in a row is too bad. She still has a lot of points coming off in the rankings from her title wins last year, so playing in big tournaments (and doing well) will hopefully even things out with her ranking.

ASB Classic given no-go list

Auckland's ASB Tennis Classic tournament director Richard Palmer has finally been told exactly who he can't approach for January's tournament.

The WTA has released it's exempt list of 10 players who aren't eligible to play Tier four tournaments like Auckland.

There are no surprises with the likes of Amelie Mauresmo, Justine Henin-Hardenne and Lindsay Davenport on the list.

Palmer says they definitely can't touch Nadia Petrova, who was top seed this year.

He says it doesn't have a big affect as there are a host of top players such as Nicole Vaidisova, Anastasia Myskina and Tatiana Golovin who they will be targeting for the ASB Classic, which will be shown live on TV ONE in January.

Nicole shouldn't play a Tier IV, so I hope she doesn't commit.

Nicole cannot make the YEC unless 2 players pull out (this is only if Schnyder wins another match this year)

:hysteric: :hysteric: :hysteric: :hysteric:

She could still go as an alternate (which doesn't mean much but still) if she can pass Dinara. Here's what TBE posted in GM:

they always have 2 alternates who HAVE to be there until all group matches have been played.
and they get $20000 for doing nothing

Regarding rankings - from TBE's post, Nicole is back in the top 10:

9 Patty Schnyder 1620
10 Nicole Vaidisova 1391
11 Dinara Safina 1390
12 Jelena Jankovic 1187
13 Anna Chakvetadze 1120

And the race:

9 SCHNYDER, PATTY 1616.00 24
10 SAFINA, DINARA 1442.00 21
11 VAIDISOVA, NICOLE 1305.00 17
12 JANKOVIC, JELENA 1211.00 26

Someone posted in the Hasselt entry list thread that Dinara had withdrawn, but I don't know if it is official yet. So if she is out - then Nicole will hopefully be able to pass her in the race with two more tournaments left. If Dinara does play then it'll probably be hard (depending on how Safina is health-wise, etc).

Does anyone know if the year end rankings are based from the race or the regular rankings? I hope Nicole can finish the year in the top 10.

Sexysova
Oct 24th, 2006, 04:59 AM
yes but Safina doesn't play in Linz and Nicole will get 25pts for 2nd round in Linz that means: Safina 1416pts and Nicole if she won't advance to quarterfinal - 1416pts :)

After best season yet, Vaidisova not upset at missing top-eight tournament

The Czech women's tennis number one Nicole Vaidisova is currently in Prague and has been looking back on her most successful year to date. Vaidisova, still only 17, has now climbed to tenth in the world rankings. That means she misses out on the season-closing WTA Tour Championship, which features the top eight players in the world. But Nicole Vaidisova is not too disappointed about missing out on the tournament, which begins in Madrid on Tuesday.
"There were moments when I could have played better this season, but then there were also moments when I could have played worse. But I'm satisfied that I made it into the world top ten...I don't have any particular targets for next season. I just want to keep getting through rounds and rise in the rankings. But it's more about my performances at tournaments than where I am in the rankings."

We already knew Nicole would be playing Sydney again in 07 but didn't expect such a loaded field.

Best-ever field for Medibank International

Sydney, November 29 - The Medibank International has announced the greatest field in the tournament’s history with nine of the top 10 women’s players confirmed.

A spectacular line-up of women stars will grace the courts of the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre in January.

Tournament Director Craig Watson confirmed title-holder and world No.1 Justine Henin-Hardenne will return to defend the crown she won in a brilliant fashion last January.

World No.1 Justine Henin-Hardenne is the defending Medibank International champion.

Joining the Belgian will be world number three Amelie Mauresmo as well as world number four Svetlana Kuznetsova and number five Kim Clijsters.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have 18 of the top 20 women players in the world confirmed to play the Medibank International. This amazing group of players is the best field the tournament has ever seen," said Mr. Watson.

"All these women have enjoyed incredible success in 2006. Justine became the first woman since 1997 and only the seventh in the Open-era to reach all four Grand Slam finals and won the French Open for the third time. She also capped off the year by winning the season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships, where she turned the tables on Amelie.

"As for Amelie, what a year she has had; the best of her career. She is one of the few who can claim two Slam wins in a season, with her breakthrough at the Australian and then to become the first French woman since 1925 to win Wimbledon.

Rounding out confirmed players from the top 10 are Nadia Petrova at six, three-time Medibank International champion Martina Hingis at seven, Elena Dementieva at eight, Patty Schnyder at nine and Nicole Vaidisova at ten.

Petrova, Dementieva and Schnyder showed great consistency over the year. The Medibank International was one of Hingis’s comeback events and her return has been spectacular.

She started the year unranked and is back in the world’s top 10. Vaidisova has also had the best year of her career; winning the title at Strasbourg and scoring a major upset at the French Open by beating Mauresmo where she also reached the semifinals.

One of the most popular players on the women's tour, Francesca Schiavone will also be back.

The Italian won over a lot of fans at the Medibank International last January when she came within a couple of games of beating Henin-Hardenne and winning the title.

She tasted incredible success in September, leading Italy to the Fed Cup crown over Belgium which included Henin-Hardenne.

China's Na Li is one of the most exciting players in the women's game. At Wimbledon last July, she became the first player from China to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam and now has a world ranking of 21.

"This is going to be a Medibank International to remember," added Mr. Watson.

"The tournament will give Sydney the chance to see so many of the world's greatest athletes in one venue. These amazing women join the outstanding men's names we have already announced including Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt, world number two and French Open champion Rafael Nadal, world number three Nikolay Davydenko, Medibank International titleholder and world number four James Blake, and Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Sydney to see the absolute cream of the world’s best tennis players at the Medibank International.”

---

I think its good Nicole will be playing HK and Sydney both with top players to see where her game is at before the AO. Would be great to start off the year with some top 10 wins, too. :)

She has her chance but It will be hard. Be very confident as this year on clay and I will say ; Why not?
Her big chance still Rg or Australian Open but I don't give her any chance in Wimbly and a little one in Uso.It Depends if she will improve her footsteps (big problem at that time). But her defense seems to be more consistent (Moscou and Linz).
Honestly, I don't think she will win a Gc in 2007. Too early for her. She has to mature.Hope,I'm wrong.

Girls 18 finals pits the 2005 finalist, Sorana Cirstea (2) of Romania against Urszula Radwanska (4) from Poland. Urszula's sister Agnieszka, is busy cheering her on in between practicing with touring pro, Nicole Vaidisova, on the practice courts.

Nicole's best surface is hard, so she has a better chance of Grand Slam success at the Australian or US Opens than the French.

She will be hard pressed to defend her semi-final at the French Open next year, but we'll see how she does at the Australian Open first. She was tired and ill at the end of the 2006 season, but should be fine in January, so I expect her to reach the fourth round. After that, she'll be at the mercy of the draw.

I disagree.

While Nicole's game may fit hardcourts better, so far she has done better on clay.

Nicole likes the time to set up her shots and the clay provides that, which is why I think Nicole was more consistent during the clay season then anywhere else.

RG is her best shot at a slam at the moment.

Knowles tourney to be held this weekend

By STAFF WRITER, Guardian Sports Desk

After another prosperous season on the tour, Bahamian tennis sensation Mark Knowles is gearing up for another year-ending tennis tournament in which he gives back to the Bahamian community through various charities.

The much-anticipated Mark Knowles Celebrity Tennis Invitational is back for its sixth season and promises to be even more exciting than ever before. This year's invitational, which is dedicated to the memory of Tennis Week founder and publisher Eugene Scott, runs from December 8-10 at the Atlantis Resort.

The spectacular line-up showcases a number of local and international top notch players, past and present, highlighting the talent of some of the greatest players ever to grace the courts. Hosted by Knowles, the tournament features internationally-renowned tennis celebrities including Bahamians Mark Merklein and Ryan Sweeting, joined by Daniel Nestor, (Knowles' regular doubles partner), former World No.1 American Jim Courier, and returning favorites Nicole Vaidisova, Jamea Jackson, Scott Davis, Rick Leach and Fred Stolle. Also playing this year will be Ivo Heuberger (Switzerland's number two player) and Andy Ram of Israel.

Fans will be thrilled by the exceptional skills combined in this year's roster, inclusive of current tennis professionals along with tennis legends, prominent individuals, local celebrities and sports icons. It is expected that Tennis lovers would appreciate and enjoy the popular free celebrity exhibition at Atlantis on December 8 at 3 pm .

There is even a segment of the tournament for fans who have dreamed of the chance to pit their skills against ranked professionals. The PRO/AM action will take place at the Lyford Cay Tennis Club and will incorporate a round robin where amateur players will play with and against each of the different tennis professionals. All proceeds from the invitational will benefit local charities. To date the event has donated $170,000 to various Bahamian charities such as The Cancer Society, The Sassoon (Bahamas) Foundation for Pediatric Heart Care, The Special Olympics, The Association for the Physically Disabled, The Children's Emergency Hostel, The Scout Association

I hope we get some pictures.

Well it'll be interesting to see her schedule for the beginning of 2007 that's for sure. It'll be hard for Nicole to stay top 10 if she doesn't play much at the start of the new season when Safina, Jankovic, etc are all real close.

Sharapova's_Boy
Dec 13th, 2006, 02:45 AM
Plus, at the moment it looks as though Nicole won't be seeded for Sydney, which means she could have trouble defending her Semi Final points. :(

Then a 4th round at the Australian, and Quarters at Tokyo. We could see Nikki back around 12-15 for awhile. :(

Vaidisova
Dec 13th, 2006, 03:14 AM
I don't want Nicole to fall too much in the rankings before RG, which will be a big test for her, with the pressure and all coming back as a semifinalist. And obviously a big amount of points will come off, so if she is unable to defend most it'll be really bad.

What is really good regarding defending points is that from February (after Tokyo) until Strasbourg, Nicole doesn't have any huge points, so that's 4 months where she can gain. So if she does happen to fall in the rankings in the beginning of the season, I hope Nicole will gain points during this time so she can have a good seeding at RG...

I think the Top 10 souldn't be a big target for her at the start of the new season. I explain my mind, She will never play as much as Jankovic and Safina. Both play a lot,not as Nicole who play a reasonable number of tournements. Maybe she will lose her Number 10 spot in january, but she has to focus on her performence and what she will do at each tournement. That's the most important think and the rankings will be the outcome of all her work. But,she doesn't need to play much tournements than Jankovic or Safina or anybody......It will be a wrong decision. If she decides to not play at Tokyo or Memphis, maybe she will go to Paris and Antwerp. And,IMO,it will be a better decision, she will have time to recover from her Ao and not to do so much travels. And I think this tournements will be more interesting to play, the Tokyo seed is not very strong and memphis is a Tiers 3. She doesn't need to play Tiers 3 right now. :)

Sorry for mystakes!

We get the draw in like 2 weeks - wanna see who Nicole plays first. I'd like to see her play Azarenka, Radwanska, etc... She'll be seeded in the 9-12 group, so that means 5-8 in the 4R which would be Kim, Nadia, Martina, or Elena. Knowing Nicole's luck she'd get drawn to play Kim or Nadia. :help:
