Regional digest: Vaidisova 16th in world tennis rankings

Published 2:15 am PST Tuesday, November 8, 2005
Story appeared in Sports section, Page C7

Two tennis players with local connections reached career highs in the world rankings released Monday.

Although Nicole Vaidisova's 18-match winning streak ended in the semifinals of the Advanta Championships in Villanova, Pa., the 16-year-old Czech improved three spots to No. 16.

The previous career high for Vaidisova, a member of the Capitals for the past two summers, was No. 17 on Oct. 17. She ended last year at No. 77.
Meanwhile, Roseville resident Dmitry Tursunov rose 13 places in the men's rankings to No. 62 after reaching the third round of the Paris Masters as a qualifier.

Tursunov, a 22-year-old native of Moscow, had been ranked as high as No. 63 on July 5 last year. The day before, he re-fractured a vertebra in his back in a boating mishap, sat out for six months and plummeted to No. 153 in the rankings.

this years latter stages (USopen and onwards) mean next year she'll have a chance to get into the YEC.
but it will require from her to:
Improve GS results - really, she should be reaching the 4th round + in all but RG next year.
improving TierI showings
Winning titles in this sort of rate (multiple titles a year)
reaching the final of higher tiers
Improving her clay play.

It sounds like alot - but it's basicly all the same - every tourny she participates must be a QF or better. she's been doing that alot this year - she just needs to do it in higher tiers next year.
she had two TierI QF this year - if you look at what petrova did this year you'll see how hard it is nowadays to be a top tenner without winning a slam.

She has done it for the last couple years...
in 05 she withdrew from her opening singles match @ hong kong with 'gastro', giving her many days to prepare for hobart.

in 06 she will have a maximum of 24hrs in sydney to prepare for her 1st match.

i hope your right about her being able to cope with the jet lag and lack of prep time in sydney, sounds like a big rush job to me, far from ideal...

anyway, time will tell how she copes, i will be crossing my fingers for her.

She was still there last year.. :p

Anyways... Nicole works in a different way than most of the other top players... She can play for long time...

Rain Pushes Boys 16s & 18s First Round to Wednesday

--Bradenton FL--

(...)

Card playing is one of the most popular rain-delay pastimes, although here at IMG Bollettieri's indoor courts, watching Nick coach runs a close second.Yesterday Nicole Vaidisova drew numerous spectators, as she practiced (not with Nick) backhands on an indoor court, while the sound of rain nearly drowned out the kaplunk of ball on racquet.

I'm so excited because Nicole is scheduled to play Memphis again next year according to the Commerical Appeal. I live outside of Memphis so I plan to purchase tickets so I can go to my first tournament and see Nicole! :hearts:

Kournikova to play for charity
Raymond, Ginepri return to Memphis

November 30, 2005

Two-time champion Lisa Raymond, rising 16-year-old Nicole Vaidisova, Russian model/tennis player Anna Kournikova and Americans James Blake and Robby Ginepri will appear at February's Regions Morgan Keegan Championships and the Cellular South Cup at The Racquet Club.

Kournikova will not participate in the tournament's main draw Feb. 19-26, but will play in the Cellular South Celebrity Challenge, a mixed doubles event Feb. 20 at 5:30 p.m. Mike and Bob Bryan, the world's top-ranked doubles team, also are scheduled to play in the charity challenge.

Tournament owner Mac Winker made the announcenment Tuesday in a press conference at The Racquet Club. He also announced Cellular South, the women's tournament sponsor, has signed an agreement to remain title sponsor through 2009 with an option to renew for an additional three years.

Kournikova will be making her first appearance in Memphis as a player after two trips -- in 2002 and 2003 -- as a guest of the tournament. The celebrity challenge will benefit the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund, LeBonheur Children's Hospital or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, depending on the preference of the ticket buyer.

"It was her idea of doing a charity (event)," Winker said of Kournikova, who, while no longer a tour player, frequently participates in charity tennis events.

Winker said he had hoped to name the fourth member of the charity event Tuesday, but was unable to secure a commitment. He has expressed interest in bringing in Martina Hingis, the former world No. 1 who announced Tuesday she would return to the tour in 2006.

While Hingis' status is uncertain, Vaidisova's participation is set. She will be making her second appearance in Memphis and is ranked 15th in the world. She is the only player on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour to win three straight titles in 2005.

"She is the hottest young star on tour, no question," Winker said. "She played well here last year."

Vaidisova reached the semifinals in 2005, where she lost to No. 3 seed Meghann Shaughnessy.

Ginepri, ranked 16th in the world, and Blake, ranked 25th, join a field that includes No. 3 Andy Roddick, whose commitment was announced during the summer. Ginepri has reached a career-high ranking by winning a tournament and making three semifinals, including the U.S. Open. Blake has made a remarkable comeback from a severe neck injury last year to return to the top 25. He won an event in Stockholm and reached the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open.

"Ginepri and Blake are probably two of the biggest (American) drawing cards in tennis (behind Roddick and Andre Agassi)," said tournament director Phil Chamberlain. "I think some of the European tournaments would love to have the field we have."

what is that fanlisting for? Spam and crap or something useful?

 for the spam, there is no prob because the script used is protected for spam
2) look this site http://thefanlistings.org/

What is a Fanlisting?

A fanlisting is simply an online listing of fans of a subject, such as a TV show, actor, or musician, that is created by an individual and open for fans from around the world to join. There are no costs, and the only requirements to join a fanlisting are your name and country. Fanlistings do not have to be large sites (although some are) - they are just a place where you can have your name listed along with other fans of the same subject. TheFanlistings.org is the original (but not official) web directory for fanlistings, dedicated to uniting the fans.

and 3) i saw the fanlisting of daniela hantuchova with 900 members! it's very amazing

How many events is Nikki allowed to play in 2006?

I'd still like to see her play a couple of Tier III's, perhaps Birmingham or Cincinatti, etc. It's also important that she starts playing more of the higher Tiers. She's already proven she can win consistently at the lower level, now it's time to step it up, and compete with the big babes.

I can't wait to see Nikki @ the AO. Hopefully I'll be able to see her first 3 matches (as long as she isn't scheduled for Vodafone. :( )

Capitals Update

12/29/05 - World TeamTennis (WTT) Sacramento Capitals

Women's Wear Daily, the Retailer's Daily Newspaper published in New York, featured Nicole Vaidisova in their December 15, 2005 issue. The article "Vaidisova: Tennis' Rising Star" by Melanie Kletter, was complimentary to her on- and off-court style.

Vaidisova, who was described as "about six feet tall, slender, attractive and speaks three languages, has the potential to be a major marketing force."

Sports Illustrated named Caps player Nicole Vaidisova The Best Rookie in tennis in its December 26, 2005 issue: "Nicole Vaidisova finished No. 15. The 16-year-old's combo of game, blonde tresses and multinational appeal might well make her the sport's next crossover star."

The Czech native has vaulted to a career-high of No. 15 in the world and has three key sponsorships: Reebok, Yonex and Sega. When she's not wearing tennis sneakers, she likes to "dress up and wear things that are glamorous."

"I feel like the last few months couldn't have been better," she was quoted while at New York's Reebok store. "I feel really good about the way I have been playing. My game keeps improving."

Watch for: Nicole Vaidisova
By Mark Hodgkinson
(Filed: 02/01/2006)

There are not many 16-year-old tennis players who have a Reebok shoe named after them, but then not many have the blonde good looks and the racket skills of Nicole Vaidisova. The Czech teenager, by far the youngest in the women's top 20, is already being touted as the new glamour girl of tennis.

The 2006 season, which she opens at an exhibition event in Hong Kong this week, should propel Vaidisova to Hollywood status in the sport. And hers will have been the classic route - the Eastern Bloc, and Nick Bollettieri's tennis academy in Florida.

Both Anna Kournikova and Maria Sharapova had such a grounding. Like the two Russians, Vaidisova is comforta ble with the off-court demands of being a photogenic women's tennis player. And Vaidisova won three titles last year - Kournikova famously never won a singles title.

Vaidisova's star tipped to keep on rising

Thu Jan 5, 2:46 AM ET

World number one Lindsay Davenport tipped Czech teen Nicole Vaidisova for future glory despite handing her a tennis lesson in her opening match of the season.

Davenport said Vaidisova was an exciting prospect after brushing aside the 16-year-old starlet 6-2, 6-2 at the Champions Challenge exhibition tournament late on Wednesday.

"She's got a great, great future, whether that's number one or number five it's hard to say," said Davenport, 29.

"But she's very young and she's already very good. If she continues to improve as quickly as she's already improved she's going to go higher up the rankings, so it's going to be exciting to see how she develops."

Vaidisova, currently ranked 15, became the first woman since Davenport to claim three titles in three weeks when she won the Korea, Japan and Thailand opens in October to take her career tally to five.

The six-foot (1.83-metre) photogenic blonde, who speaks three languages, has also stirred interest among marketers searching for the new Maria Sharapova and has been described as the "next crossover star".

But veteran campaigner Davenport warned that tennis must come first.

"First and foremost we are tennis players. With that you have to prioritise: tennis is one and everything else comes after that, and it's really a good lesson in how to balance your time and schedule," she said.

Jan 7th, 2006, 05:12 AM
Runner-up to fellow Australian Alicia Molik last year, Stosur's unbeaten start to 2006 will come under threat against talented eighth seed Nicole Vaidisova.

The Czech teenager has surged to 15th in the rankings after joining world No.1 Davenport as the only two players on tour last year to claim three titles in successive weeks.

"She's a tall girl who hits the ball hard and serves well so it's going to be a tough one for me," Stosur said.

Stosur, though, has made a fabulous start to the year with three straight victories at the Hopman Cup round-robin event in Perth.

"That's why I wanted to play the Hopman Cup - I wanted to play three good matches to set me up for the month and that's what's happened," the 21-year-old said.

"I played well here in Sydney last year so hopefully I can again this week and then next week at the Australian Open as well."

Rising star ready for spotlight

By Jacquelin Magnay
January 12, 2006

http://www.smh.com.au/ffximage/2006/01/11/tennis1201_wideweb__470x311,0.jpg

SHE is the new glamour player, the woman every photographer has his lens focused on and, dare we say it, about to mix it with the "it" girl, Maria Sharapova, not just in the leggy, long blonde stakes, but on the court.

Nicole Vaidisova is just 16 and the youngest female player at the Sydney International tournament, but she rocketed from No.84 to No.15 in the world last year - the latest off the Nick Bollettieri Academy production line.

Still, Vaidisova's rapid promotion on and off the court - she is already a feature personality in a global sports shoe's international ad campaign - has even surpassed those who have gone before her.

Yesterday, Vaidisova progressed through to the semi-finals when Daniela Hantuchova retired sick with a gastro-intestinal illness when Vaidisova was leading 6-3, 3-1 and her semi-final appearance today on centre court will project her firmly into the spotlight for the Australian tennis fan.

But Vaidisova - who was introduced to tennis by her mother when she was six, trained at the Bollettieri academy in Florida and is now coached by her stepfather, Alex Kodat - said firmly she wanted her tennis to be her main attraction, not her looks.

At 183 centimetres, the tanned Czech, sporting bright blue shorts and a sponsor's T-shirt dotted with sparkles - a reflection of her sunny personality - was possibly conscious of the lingering hangover of tennis pin-up Anna Kournikova when she told a handful of journalists: "I definitely want people to think I am a tennis player and in the first place known as a tennis player.

"I love doing the photo shoots and the endorsements, it is definitely fun, but tennis will always be my number one priority and I want to be remembered as that."

She said she was getting used to being compared to world No.4 Sharapova - a fellow Bollettieri graduate - but stressed she was a different person.

"If we sat next to each other you would see we are two totally different people," Vaidisova noted. "I don't follow her career off court. She is a great player and she does [things her] own way. I want to do it my own way."

Vaidisova is also far quieter on court than the gruntmeister Sharapova.

So far in Sydney Vaidisova's tennis has been a stand-out. She handled yesterday's gusty windy conditions with ease and has a lethal power serve.

But her energetic form has been evident for some months. In the last four events of 2005 she won 18 consecutive matches to conquer WTA titles in Seoul, Tokyo and Bangkok.

"I still have got a lot to work on, but I feel good about my tennis," she said.

"I need to work on my whole game, to beat the top 10 girls I have to play consistently. I'm very excited to be in the semi-final."

Vaidisova has been spared having to face world No.2 Kim Clijsters after the Belgian was forced yesterday to withdraw from the tournament because of an acute strain in her left hip. Instead she will meet seventh seed Francesca Schiavone.

I saw Nikki's match with Franny, and she was simply frustrated with the array of spins she faced.

I did like the fact that Nikki was coming into the net, trying to finish the points off (her volleys are still :scared: ). But overall she just made way too many errors (30 to 11).

It's a good draw for Nikki. :D (*Praying she doesn't get Azarenka 1r*)

She would have a problem with Chakvetadze, although considering Anna's recent form, Nikki should cruise comfortably. And she owns Zheng, so she should reach at least the 3r.

madame_maria
Jan 13th, 2006, 03:35 PM
i'd actually like to think that if Nicole gets beyond the 3rd round, she'd easily make the quarters because i personally reckon Schynder/Myskina's portion of the draw to be rather weak.

Nicole would have to play either Chakvatadze or Zheng who are both capable of pulling upsets if Nicole isn't up to the task. Pennetta has been playing rather well, then there's Sania Mirza, the VERY in-form Michaella Krajicek and then world number 3 (says it all doesn't it) Amelia Mauresmo.

i would actually like to think Nicole got a slightly uphill task, but still it is manageable if and ONLY if Nicole decides, "Hey! I'd do anything to win." after the third round, Nicole is almost a sure quarterfinalist.

I was surprised how poorly she served, she'd been serving great all week, then comes out and does that.

Also where was the emotion? She looked like a robot out there. I prefered it when she threw her racket, and vent her frustration. At least then she would play better...

It was nice to see her trying to come to the net, it's certainly an aspect of her game that needs improving, but also it's a part of her game that she needs.

That was ugly. When ES tuned in it was already 1-6 0-2.
Her strokes were not as smooth as usual, her serve was terrible and she rushed the net to much without knowing what to do or honestly having the skill to do something there.
