Vaidisova leads teenagers to quarters

TOKYO: Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic outshone her teenage rivals and the richer men’s event to reach the quarter-finals of the Japan Open tennis tournament here on Thursday.

Fresh from her victory at the Korea Open last weekend, the 16-year-old second seed shrugged off a service break deficit to beat Japan’s Rika Fujiwara 6-4, 6-2. Maria Kirilenko of Rusia, 18, who posted her first career title at the China Open two weeks ago, outclassed Henrieta Nagyova of Slovakia 6-4, 6-2, while Tatiana Golovin of France, 17, breezed past Saori Obata of Japan 6-1, 6-4. India’s rising star Sania Mirza, 18, made quick work of another Japanese, Aiko Nakamura, 6-1, 6-4 to set up a quarter-final match against top seed Vera Zvonareva of Russia.

Vaidisova Advances in Three at Wet WTA Tokyo

Posted on October 06, 2005

Only three matches were completed Wednesday amidst rains at the WTA stop in Tokyo, with No. 3 seed Tatiana Golovin (d. Spears) and No. 2 Nicole Vaidisova (d. Morigami from a set down) completing first-round matches.
"My expectations are higher," Vaidisova said. "I think if I play my best, I can go at least to the final."

Swedish qualifier Sofia Arvidsson advanced into the quarterfinals with an upset win over No. 7 seed Shinobu Asagoe, coming back from a one-set deficit.

Thursday's rain-heavy scheduled will include Zvonareva vs. Peer, Fujiwara vs. Vaidisova, Pin vs. Sugiyama, Nakamura vs. Mirza, Nagyova vs. Kirilenko, Golovin vs. Obata, and Dulko vs. Craybas.

Golovin crushes Mirza to meet Vaidisova in final

TOKYO: Third seed Tatiana Golovin of France swept past India’s Sania Mirza 6-2, 6-4 and into the women’s final on a windy day at the Japan Open on Saturday.
“I’m really happy... it’s going to be really exciting tomorrow,” the 17-year-old Golovin said. Her opponent in Sunday’s final will be second seed Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic who breezed past fourth seed Maria Kirilenko of Russia 6-4 6-2 at Tokyo’s Ariake Colosseum. The eighth-seeded Mirza, who ousted top seed Vera Zvonareva in Thursday’s quarter-finals looked out of sorts in the gusty conditions despite vociferous crowd support. A strong wind made conditions tricky but Golovin kept her cool while Mirza’s more attack-minded tactics were out of sync with the conditions.
“The wind affected both of us but I think I dealt with it a little better,” Golovin said. Moscow-born Golovin ended the first set with a stunning drive from outside the right tramlines and streaked into a 5-0 lead in the second set. With the fans noisily supporting the Indian, Mirza rallied to 5-2 before rain forced the Centre Court roof to be closed. The Indian superstar quickly put two more games on the scoreboard, but despite loud chants of “Mirza Mirza,” she surrendered another service game and with it the match.
Great person: “It’s always good to have the crowd behind you,” Mirza said. “I’m sorry if I let them down. I just wanted to get a game, and then I saw an opening. At 5-4, it could have gone either way.” Sunday’s final will be repeat of a first-round match in last year’s competition when Golovin was the second seed. Vaidisova, then only 15, won the match 6-3 6-4. “You will see a completely different match from last year,” Golovin vowed. “You’ll see how much we’ve both improved.”

Vaidisova wins in Tokyo after Golovin retires

Czech teenager Nicole Vaidisova won the Japan Open on Sunday after France's Tatiana Golovin was forced to retire with a leg injury in the second set.

The victory was second seed Vaidisova's biggest title to date and her fourth overall. It was also her second in successive weeks having won in Seoul last week.

The Czech was leading the match 7-6 3-2 when a limping Golovin called it quits in Tokyo.

"I played a pretty good match but I feel really sorry we couldn't finish it," Vaidisova said. "I'm sad for Tatiana.

"The first set was really tight, so I was hoping it would turn into a good match with a good finish, but it didn't turn out that way."

The match was the eighth youngest final in the Open era with the 16-year-old Vaidisova against the 17-year-old from France.

Third seed Golovin took a medical timeout for an Achilles problem after going down 3-1 in the second set and stopped three points into the sixth game.

"After the last few matches I've been waking up with a lot of pain," Golovin said.

"Today I really had no choice (but to stop)."

Vaidisova Wins in Tokyo for Fourth Career Title

TOKYO, Japan - In an unfortunate end to a wonderful week highlighting the future stars of women's tennis, France's Tatiana Golovin was forced to retire in the final of the AIG Japan Open against fellow teen Nicole Vaidisova.

Golovin, 17, appearing in her second Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles final and aiming for her first title, trailed the 16-year-old Czech 76(4) 32 when a left Achilles tendon injury prevented her from continuing.

"This is my first retirement and hopefully my last because you feel so bad, especially because you just want to keep playing," said Golovin, the No.3 seed.

Golovin had been bothered by the injury for the past three days, but had managed to play through it, scoring wins this week over Abigail Spears, Saori Obata, No.5 seed and two-time former champion Ai Sugiyama and No.8 seed Sania Mirza.

In an evenly contested match, the players traded breaks in the middle of the first set to reach 6-6. Golovin was able to predict Vaidisova's shots and hit winners, but Vaidisova's big serve was key in winning the tie-break, repeatedly putting Golovin on the defensive.

At 3-1 in the second set, Golovin called for the Tour's primary health care provider, Kathy Martin, to attend to a broken toe nail on her left foot. While she was sitting down during the medical time-out, her Achilles tendon tightened up on her, and although she won the next game to get to 2-3, Golovin decided she couldn't play anymore.

"It didn't feel that bad this morning and I thought that it would be okay," said Golovin. "The last three days, I've been feeling (the pain in my Achilles tendon), but I think the adrenaline keeps you going and you sort of forget about it.

"But after I sat down (for the medical time-out), I really felt it and just couldn't go on. I'm sad that I couldn't play. Unfortunately, if it's your Achilles, you feel it all the time; it's not a special movement."

It was the eighth-youngest final on the Tour in the Open Era, with a combined age of 34 years, two months. Last year, a 16-year-old Golovin featured in the third-youngest final, falling to then-17-year-old Maria Sharapova in the Birmingham decider. The all-time youngest final saw Jennifer Capriati (15 years, four months) defeat Monica Seles (17 years, eight months) in the 1991 San Diego final, with a combined age of 33 years.

"I thought it was a good match," said Vaidisova of Sunday's final. "I hope that I would have won anyway, and I think I could have closed it out, but those are just 'maybes.' I thought she was moving really well and got to a lot of balls. I hope that we'll meet again in a final."

In a true showcase of new talent on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, both semifinals were all-teen affairs, with Golovin defeating 18-year-old Mirza and Vaidisova beating Maria Kirilenko, also 18. It was the first time four teenagers reached the semifinals of the same Tour event since 2001 's-Hertogenbosch, when Justine Henin, Kim Clijsters, Jelena Dokic and Iroda Tulyaganova contested the final four (Henin went on to beat Clijsters in the final).

Vaidisova, who is projected to break into the Top 20 on Monday's Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Singles Rankings, becomes the 15th multiple winner on Tour this season, having collected her first title of 2005 last week in Seoul, Korea. The 16-year-old Czech now owns four Tour singles titles, having won Vancouver and Tashkent last year as a 15-year-old.

"I'm definitely happy," added Vaidisova, who defeated Akiko Morigami, Rika Fujiwara, Sofia Arvidsson and recent Beijing champion Maria Kirilenko to reach the final. "It's great to win two titles this year and two in a row. And it's nice to upgrade (to my first Tier III).

"I think I've been playing more steadily this year. Last year, I would have a good week, then a bad one, but I think this year, I've improved my consistency. I know there is a lot to improve, but I'm happy with my progress so far."

Despite the loss, Golovin was pleased with her efforts this week, even in the final prior to the injury.

"I was kind of ready for how she plays," said Golovin of Vaidisova. "I could pick up a few things about her game and just had to take more advantage of the chances that I had, but I got tired and made some unforced errors. I tried not to give her too many angles but she can get to every ball with her long arms and legs. I tried to hit to her body and keep it deep."

Golovin falls to 0-2 lifetime against Vaidisova, having lost their only prior encounter here last year at the Japan Open in the second round.

"I'm very happy with they way I played this week. I had a lot of good matches and gained a lot of confidence. I think I played a great set and half and did the right things on court. It was nice to come back and do better after last year, so I can now take back some good memories, and hopefully, I'll be back next year."

For winning the title, Vaidisova, now on a 10-match win streak, earned $27,000, while runner-up Golovin took home $14,280.

yeah, first of all congrats nici-baby!!you have a great run at the moment!and its a very wise and intelligent decision of her,to stay to the "smaller" events building up a own profile for her, than go to moscow(for example..)and possibly being trampled down by the "russian armada",or by another high-profile player.
so,it looks like shes pretty highly strung, but has a good brain all the same.a very good mix....

you are right about me being wrong inmy question.

I mean the way you write their names... is unnecessary I believe... :p

On the contrary, the Slovak alphabet (and thus, I assume, the Czech alphabet) treats "Š" as a separate letter after "S" (thus "šablóna" comes after "sýty" in my Slovak dictionary).

So to spell "VAIDIŠOVÁ" as "VAIDISOVÁ" is as much a spelling-mistake as to spell "NICOLE" as "NICOLF" since the letter "E" looks like it could be a variant of "F" with one extra line.

The "á" at the end of Vaidišová is also important, as all female Czech surnames end in "á" (a surname ending in plain "a" could only be a male surname, as in "Kučera").

On-court - Nicole Vaidišová and Tatiana Golovin:

I must admit that Nicole is a beautiful champion. Her face now looks prettier than it ever has before, and she certainly knows how to pose with a trophy! :hearts: She has the firepower to rise to the top of women's tennis, and if my hunch about her is correct, then I look forward to the time when she will be dominating the game alongside Maria Sharapova - the player she so resembles in looks, game, and off-court charm.

-----------
First round
-----------

+ NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [2] d. Akiko Morigami, 4-6 6-1 6-1

Akiko is a Selesian player (two hands both sides).

Nicole: "Akiko played very well in the first set, and I made some unforced errors and sort of let my game slip away. The courts were faster than in Korea, and I wasn't moving very well. But by the second set, I was in total control of the match. I was serving and returning very well. Akiko seemed to get tired and I was still fired up."

"My expectations are higher [than they were at last year's tournament]. I think if I play my best, I can go at least to the final."

Akiko: "I played her in Korea, and she was in such good form. Today, I couldn't play my game at all. I didn't make too many errors in the first set, and I think I was able to throw her off, but she was able to switch gears so quickly after the first set.

"I don't think my game collapsed; she just got so much better. I maybe overshot the baseline and stepped in too much, but that was the way I had to play because she was serving so well."

------------
Second round
------------

+ NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [2] d. Rika Fujiwara, 6-4 6-2

Nicole: "I thought my rhythm was off today, and I didn't feel so good out there. After I was 4-3 down, I tried to stay calm and get focused. I was able to get through the match, but I definitely need to improve my game."

-------------
Quarter-final
-------------

+ NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [2] d. Sofia Arvidsson [Q], 2-6 6-3 6-2

----------
Semi-final
----------

+ NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [2] d. MARIA KIRILENKO [4], 6-4 6-2

www.wtatour.com (http://www.wtatour.com/): "Kirilenko's net game was not as effective as it was in her quarter-final win over 2002 champion Jill Craybas, while Vaidišová, who struggled to beat Swedish qualifier Sofia Arvidsson on Friday, displayed improved court coverage, getting to many shots that appeared to be likely winners. The 18-year-old Kirilenko also paid the price for some poor shot selection and squandered a lot of important points."

Nicole: "I think I played a lot better today than yesterday. I got into my rhythm and was hitting the ball better. I tried to play more to her forehand because I noticed she was struggling with it.

Re. four teenagers in the semi-finals:
"There's definitely a new wave of tennis. Hopefully people will see more of the young generation in the next couple of years."

---------
The Final
---------

I wish Tokyo were in Birmingham. Then perhaps I could have gone to see the flairsomely-talented Tatiana Golovin and Nicole Vaidišová - arguably the two leading candidates for possible induction into my eternal fanship - play each other in a mouthwatering final, rather than just following it on the Internet.

But the outcome was a desperately sad one:

+ NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [2] d. TATIANA GOLOVIN [3],
7-6 (7/4) *3-2 (30/15) retired (left-Achilles tendonitis)

This is the worst news I've ever heard about Tatiana. She's been struggling with a right-ankle sprain since May, but that was hardly a career-threatening injury. However, to hear that she's having problems with her Achilles tendon (on her other foot) means living in constant fear of a partial rupture - the injury that ended Karina Habšudová's career so abruptly in 2002. I can only pray that this won't happen to Tatiana while she's still so tragically young.

Preview
-------

It was Nicole and Tatiana's second head-to-head - the first was at this very tournament last year, when Nicole upset Tatiana 6-4 3-6 6-4 in the first round (much to my disappointment at the time).

Tatiana: "Last year, I lost to Nicole, but I think people would say that Nicole and I are not playing the same tennis that we played last year. We're more mature and confident. It was my first year on the WTA Tour, and I think I'm much more different now.

"Tomorrow's match will definitely be different than last year's. People will see how much we improved. It will be a new match between two totally different players."

"I'm feeling good going into the final. I know it's going to be tough. Nicole is kind of on a roll and has a lot of confidence, so I will have to play great tennis."

Nicole: "I'm definitely excited to be in the final tomorrow, and I'll give it my best. She's a good player, so it's going to be a tough match."

It was the second final of Tatiana's career - after Birmingham 2004 (against Maria Sharapova), which I had the very great pleasure of attending in person.

The match itself
----------------

The match started at 11:10 Japanese time. I followed live scores on the Internet; here are my comments as I wrote them at the time:

First Set
---------
GOLOVIN _*__@* * * * 6(4)
VAIDIŠO * *@__* * *_ 7(7)

Nicole serving 0-0: held to love.

Nicole has a huge serve (and forehand), so if she can hold serve reliably, Tatiana will be under immense pressure to hold hers.

Tatiana serving 0-1: 15/0, 15/15, 30/15, held.

A very quick start to the match (4m).

Nicole serving 1-1: 15/0, 15/15, 15/30, 30/30, 40/30, held.
Tatiana serving 1-2: 15/0, 15/15, 30/15, 30/30, 40/30, 40/40, ad T, Deuce #2, ad N (BP), broken.

Oh dear. That could be a very big blow against Tatiana - psychologically too, as she was a point ahead four times in that game.

It can't be easy for Tatiana to be playing a 16-year-old (Nicole is 15 months younger than Tatiana) who already has three WTA singles titles to her name, while Tatiana is still seeking her first.

Nicole serving 3-1: 0/30, 15/30, 40/30, 40/40, ad T (BP), broken.

A champion's response from Tatiana - breaking back immediately (and how I would love to see Tatiana become a champion, as Nicole is already).

Tatiana serving 2-3: 0/30, 15/40 (2 BPs), 30/40, 40/40, ad T, held.

Now it's Nicole struggling to take her opportunities - losing two games that she had game-points in.

Nicole serving 3-3: 15/15, 15/40 (2 BPs) -> 40/40, ad N, held.

An important hold for Nicole to steady the ship. Two breaks in a row would have turned the momentum firmly in Tatiana's favour.

Tatiana serving 3-4: 40/0, 40/15, held.

We certainly seem to have a match worthy of the girls who are arguably the two leading candidates for the next place in my eternal fanship.

Nicole serving 4-4: 15/15, 40/15 -> 40/40, ad N, held.

Now we're at the business-end of the first set, this is where the advantage of serving first comes into its own - no room for Tatiana to have another bad service-game.

Tatiana serving to stay in the first set at 4-5: 0/15, 30/15, 30/30, 30/40 (SP), 40/40, ad T, held.

It feels like Nicole has the edge while Tatiana is hanging on to this set for dear life. I get the feeling that a victory for Nicole is almost inevitable, but Tatiana can be proud of the way she's competed so far.

Nicole serving 5-5: 15/15, 15/40 (2 BPs) -> 40/40, ad N, held.

Neither girl is a mental giant, so it will be fascinating to see who reacts better to their missed opportunities. Nicole has the advantage of titles under her belt, while Tati loves to choke.

Tatiana serving to stay in the first set at 5-6: 15/15, 40/15, held.
6-6 tiebreak: Tatiana *1/0, *1/1; Nicole *2/1, *3/1, 4/1*, 4/2*, *5/2, *6/2 (4 SPs), 6/3*, 6/4*, Nicole won the first set 7-6 (7/4) at 12:05 (55m).

It feels to me like this set ran out of score before the competition really resolved itself, but I fear it will be a very tall order for Tatiana to bounce back from losing this long, tough set, on which she will have used up so much emotional energy (losing the first set on a tiebreak was always the toughest situation for me when I used to play tennis - I would always lose the second set 6-0 after that). At least she'll have the advantage of serving first in the second set.

Yahoo! Sports (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/): "In an evenly contested match, the players traded breaks in the middle of the first set to reach 6-6. Golovin was able to predict Vaidišová's shots and hit winners, but Vaidišová's big serve was key in winning the tie-break, repeatedly putting Golovin on the defensive."

Second Set
----------
GOLOVIN *___* 2 retired
VAIDIŠO _*@*_ 3

Tatiana serving 0-0: 0/30, 15/30, 40/30, held.
Nicole serving 1-0: held to love.
Tatiana serving 1-1: 15/0, 15/15, 15/30, 30/30, 30/40 (BP), broken.

A set and a break for Nicole - has this contest turned into a procession?

Nicole serving 2-1: 40/0, 40/15, held.

Something's going on here - has the scoreboard frozen, or is it a medical timeout? Tatiana took a timeout for her right foot (she's been struggling with an ankle-sprain since May, and it's still heavily bandaged) when Maria Sharapova led 7-5 3-0 in their Birmingham 2005 semi-final.

I later found out that Tatiana's timeout was for a broken toenail on her left foot, and that her Achilles tendon stiffened up while she was sitting there.

Tatiana serving 1-3: 0/15, 30/15, held.
Nicole serving 3-2: 0/15, 15/15, 30/15, Tatiana retired at 12:34 (1h 24m).

What a desperately sad way for this mouthwatering match to end - especially with it being a final. First the Super Maria Sisters' Beijing semi-final, and now this!

Tatiana quotes
--------------

"It was a good match and it could have gone either way, but I've had this problem with my Achilles tendon since the US Open. I have had treatment on it and it got better, but I wasn't able to walk, I'm limping.

"After the last few matches I've been waking up with a lot of pain. But I was still able to get through the matches as I didn't feel it that much. Today I really had no choice [but to stop].

"It didn't feel that bad this morning, and I thought that it would be okay. The last three days, I've been feeling pain, but I think the adrenaline keeps you going and you sort of forget about it.

"But after I sat down [for the medical timeout], I really felt it and just couldn't go on. I'm sad that I couldn't play. Unfortunately, if it's your Achilles, you feel it all the time; it's not a special movement.

"This is my first retirement and hopefully my last because you feel so bad, especially because you just want to keep playing.

"I was kind of ready for how she plays. I could pick up a few things about her game, and just had to take more advantage of the chances that I had, but I got tired and made some unforced errors. I tried not to give her too many angles, but she can get to every ball with her long arms and legs. I tried to hit to her body and keep it deep.

"I'm very happy with the way I played this week. I had a lot of good matches and gained a lot of confidence. I think I played a great set and half, and did the right things on court. It was nice to come back and do better after last year, so I can now take back some good memories, and hopefully I'll be back next year."

Nicole quotes
-------------

"I played a pretty good match, but I feel really sorry we couldn't finish it. I'm sad for Tatiana. The first set was really tight, but I was confident I could close it out. So I was hoping it would turn into a good match with a good finish, but it didn't turn out that way.

"She played a pretty good match, but it's a sad final - hopefully she'll get better and play her next tournament.

"I hope that I would have won anyway, and I think I could have closed it out, but those are just 'maybes.' I thought she was moving really well and got to a lot of balls. I hope that we'll meet again in a final.

"I'm definitely happy. It's great to win two titles this year and two in a row. And it's nice to upgrade [to my first Tier III].

"I think I've been playing more steadily this year. Last year, I would have a good week, then a bad one, but I think this year, I've improved my consistency. I know there is a lot to improve, but I'm happy with my progress so far."

Go Kid!

It's really rare for me to like new playerd, muchless big servers; but she's great. I like the attitude, the work ethic, and that fighting spirit. :)

I think Nic, and Maria Kirilenko are the best new players on tour. I seen Ana; but she wasn't as entertaining as Nicole.

Thailand looks very do-able. :)

Vaidisova Advances to Semis in Thailand Fri Oct 14,11:36 AM ET

Czech teenager Nicole Vaidisova routed former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez 6-3, 6-0 Friday to advance to the Thailand Open semifinals.

The 16-year-old used her power game to beat the 33-year-old Martinez and extended her winning streak to 13 matches. Play was delayed 2 hours because of rain.

The second-seeded Vaidisova will face third-seeded Gisela Dulko of Argentina, who beat China's Meng Yuan 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Italy's Antonella Serra Zanetti also needed three sets to defeat eighth-seeded Shahar Peer of Israel, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

Serra Zanetti will face the winner of Friday's quarterfinal nightcap between top-seeded Nadia Petrova of Russia and qualifier Stephanie Foretz of France.

Vaidisova said she had expected a tougher match against Martinez.

"In the second set, I picked it up very fast, just dictating play, so she didn't get any rhythm," Vaidisova said.

Vaidisova claims title hat-trick

Czech teenager Nicole Vaidisova upset top seed Nadia Petrova 6-1 6-7 (7-5) 7-5 to win the Thailand Open on Sunday and claim her third title in a row.

With the match level at one-set all, the 16-year-old made the crucial breakthrough when she broke Petrova in the 12th game of the final set.

"I was very exhausted," said Vaidisova, who has already won the Korea and Japan Opens before her success in Bangkok.

"I played very good in the first set but I lost my rhythm a little bit."

Teen on a roll
Vaidisova, 16, takes Thailand Open; win streak at 15

Posted: Sunday October 16, 2005 10:16AM; Updated: Sunday October 16, 2005 10:50AM

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) -- Teenager Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic won her third straight title Sunday, upsetting top-seeded Nadia Petrova 6-1, 6-7 (5), 7-5 at the Thailand Open.

The 16-year-old Vaidisova extended her winning streak to 15 matches, including titles at the Korea and Japan Opens. She is the first player to win in three consecutive weeks on the WTA Tour this season.

Vaidisova won her fifth career title, capturing two in 2004.

"I was very exhausted," she said. "I played very good in the first set, but the second set I lost my rhythm a little bit. I was a break down in the third set, but I came back to win."

Vaidisova played the more aggressive game under overcast skies, dominating from the baseline with her ground strokes. She broke Petrova at love to lead 3-1 in the first set after the world No. 9 committed two backhand errors.

The hard-hitting Vaidisova continued to set the pace in the second set, but the more experienced Petrova managed to keep the ball in play, forcing Vaidisova into errors to break back for 2-2 before winning the tiebreaker.

Vaidisova broke Petrova's serve in the 12th game of the third set, with the Russian losing the match by hitting a forehand long.

PTT THAILAND OPEN (Bangkok, Thailand; hard; WTA Tier III)
=================

Five titles in her career. Three in a row. 15 matches won in a row. These are incredible statistics for a 16-year-old - in fact I can't think of more than five 16-year-olds in tennis-history who might have bettered them (Monica Seles and Martina Hingis being the obvious ones).

+ NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [2] d. Abigail Spears, 7-5 6-2

Nicole: "My rhythm was off at the beginning. I just didn't get used to the court and the balls, coming from Seoul and Tokyo. I was 3-5 behind but came back. I ended the match pretty well.

"Sure, I have a little confidence after winning two titles, but everything is new here. It is new balls, a new court and different temperatures. It's very different than Seoul and Tokyo. It was a slow start but then I got more comfortable in the second set and was able to get the win."

Gisela went into this match with a good attitude: "I'm looking forward to playing Nicole. She is on a big streak right now, and I know she's going to come out and play hard. I just have to play my game because I have nothing to lose. I'm going to go out there and have fun, and we'll see."

Gisela did much better than I expected - apparently she was "on fire" in the first set while Nicole was below par. If I'd known it was going to be this competitive, I'd have followed live scores rather than just reading the WTAworld scores-thread afterwards:

+ NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [2] d. NADIA PETROVA [1], 6-1 6-7 (5/7) 7-5

My preview
----------

This is a most intriguing final - and the one which I must admit I've been looking forward to all week, even though I'm not keen on Petrova.

Petrova was the last player to beat Nicole - 7-6 7-5 in the fourth round of the US Open. Since then, Nicole has won 14 matches in a row, whereas Petrova has yet to win a WTA singles title in her career. That's a big monkey on the 23-year-old's back when she has to face a 16-year-old who already has four titles.

Petrova: "I'm going to go out there and play my best game tomorrow. Everyone wants to win every match. Everyone also wants to beat you if you are the top seed; they see you as a target. They will come out playing hard because they have nothing to lose. I'm not putting any pressure on myself to win the title. If I don't do it here, I'll have the chance to do it somewhere else I'm sure. I'm not going to have that on my mind."

Nicole's description of Petrova: "She is a top 10 and a big server. She has solid groundstrokes."

Petrova's description of Nicole: "She has good serves, very strong, attacks fast and goes for winners."

The match itself
----------------

I followed live scores at http://www.pentanglepromotions.com/ (http://www.pentanglepromotions.com/) - weather at the venue: sunny and hot.

I also used the WTAworld scores-thread:
http://www.wtaworld.com/showthread.php?t=198874 (http://www.wtaworld.com/showthread.php?t=198874)

The match started at 15:15 Thai time. Here are my comments as I wrote them at the time:

First Set
---------
VAIDIŠ * *@*@* 6
PETROV _*_____ 1

Nicole serving 0-0: 40/0, 40/15, held with an ace.
Petrova serving 0-1: Double fault, 0/15, 40/15, held.
Nicole serving 1-1: 0/15, 15/15, 40/15, held.
Petrova serving 1-2: broken to love.
Nicole serving 3-1: held to love.

12 points in a row to Nicole!

Petrova serving 1-4: 15/0, 15/40 (2 BPs), 30/40, broken.
Nicole serving for the first set at 5-1: 40/0 (3 SPs) -> 40/40, ad V (SP #4), Nicole won the first set 6-1 at 15:35 with "an angled FH flick CC" [TheBoiledEgg].

Apparently Petrova is very nervous.

Second Set
----------
VAIDIŠ _*@__* * * * 6(5)
PETROV *__@* * * *_ 7(7)

Petrova serving 0-0: 15/0, 30/15, scoreboard froze... held.
Nicole serving 1-0: 30/30, 40/30, held.
Petrova serving 1-1: 0/30, 15/30, 30/40 (BP), broken.

A set and a break up! :) But then so was Maria (http://www.geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/shara/) in her Moscow quarter-final. :(

Nicole serving 2-1: 0/15, 15/30, broken.
Petrova serving 2-2: held to love.

The first momentum-shift of the match. The first set and three games were all one-way traffic for Nicole, but her victory is in a bit of danger now. Petrova has six aces so far.

Nicole serving 2-3: 15/30, 30/30, 30/40 (BP), 40/40, ad P (BP #2), Deuce #2, ad V, held.

A very important hold for Nicole, otherwise Petrova could easily have taken over this set.

Petrova serving 3-3: 15/15, 40/15, held.
Nicole serving 3-4: 15/0, 15/15, 30/30, 30/40 (BP), 40/40, held.

And again a vital hold - otherwise Petrova would have been serving for the set at 5-3.

Petrova serving 4-4: held to love?

This set, and indeed the very match, is on a knife-edge now. Is Petrova really going to keep missing her chances to break until Nicole is holding the trophy so sexily?

Nicole serving to stay in the second set at 4-5: 15/15, 30/30, 40/30, held.
Petrova serving 5-5: 15/15, 40/15, held.
Nicole serving to stay in the second set at 5-6: 40/15, held.
6-6 tiebreak: Petrova 1/0*, 1/1*; Petrova *2/1, *3/1, scoreboard froze... Petrova 4/2*, *5/3, 6/3* (3 SPs), Nicole saved the first with an ace, 6/4*, *6/5, Petrova won the second set 7-6 (7/5) at 16:27.

At least Nicole has the advantage of serving first in the third.

Third Set
---------
VAIDIŠ * *___*@* *@ 7
PETROV _* *@*___*__ 5

Nicole serving 0-0: held to love with two aces.
Petrova serving 0-1: 15/15, 30/30, held.
Nicole serving 1-1: 15/0, 15/15, 30/15, 30/30, 40/30, 40/40, ad V, held.
Petrova serving 1-2: 30/0, 30/15, 40/15, held.
Nicole serving 2-2: 15/0, 15/30, 30/30, 30/40 (BP), broken.

From 6-1 *2-1 up to 6-1 6-7 2-3* down. :(

Sometimes Petrova can lull her opponent into a false sense of security by starting very badly and then coming on strong. She did it to Maria Sharapova in their US Open quarter-final, resulting in a very narrow win for Maria in the end (7-5 4-6 6-4 after Maria had led *4-0 in the first and 5-2* in the third).

Petrova serving 3-2: 30/0, 40/15, held.
Nicole serving 2-4: 40/0, 40/30, held.
Petrova serving 4-3: 0/15, 15/15, 15/40 (2 BPs), broken.

YES!! Get your fifth title Nicole - I want to see more of those sexy Vaidišová trophy-photos! ;)

Nicole serving 4-4: 15/0, 15/30, 30/30, 40/30, held.
Petrova serving to stay in the match at 4-5: 15/0, 30/15, 40/15, 40/30, held.
Nicole serving 5-5: 0/15, 15/15, 40/15, held.
Petrova serving to stay in the match at 5-6: 0/15, 15/30, 15/40 (2 CPs), Nicole won 6-1 6-7 (5/7) 7-5 at 17:07.

Nicole quotes
-------------

"It feels good! I don't think it could get any better than this. I was pretty consistent today, and I'm happy with the way I played overall. I think I challenged her today, and showed that I could beat a higher ranked player when I'm on my game.

"I was very exhausted. I played very good in the first set, but the second set I lost my rhythm a little bit. I was a break down in the third set, but I came back to win.

"My game has improved and I'm happy, but I'm still going to keep working hard on everything overall. I enjoyed my trip to Asia."

Petrova quotes
--------------

"I couldn't serve today. I've been struggling with a right pectoral strain since my last tournament, and yesterday after my three-set match it seemed to get worse. I tried to fight through it, but in the third set it really started to hurt. Then my serve was just very off.

"Today it was hard to challenge. She was going for winners and getting them. I tried to play my best, but I just couldn't do it."

There's a distinct possibility that I will induct Nicole into my eternal fanship in the future, but I'm not anywhere near ready to induct my next player yet.

The issue for Nicole is not how successful she is going to be, because I firmly believe that she is heading towards the very top of women's tennis anyway.

The issue for Nicole is: will I be able to watch her play with a level of enjoyment and depth of appreciation comparable to those players already in my eternal fanship - and clearly more than everyone else outside it?

Nicole at 16 is a rough diamond, and all I can do now is wait and see whether she develops in the right directions for me. What's important to me, in particular, is that she develops flairsome power rather than big muscles. The Dark Side Of The Force Is A Pathway To Many Abilities Some Consider To Be UnNatural.

Vaidisova makes her move
By Scott Riley, Tennis Editor

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - It's only a matter of time now before Czech slugger Nicole Vaidisova reaches the top 10 on the WTA Tour.

The 16-year-old star caught fire a few weeks ago and hasn't lost since the U.S. Open.

The 5-foot-11 Vaidisova finds herself in the midst of a sizzling 15-match winning streak, the result of back-to-back-to-back titles in the Asian capital cities of Seoul, Tokyo and Bangkok. Combined with a run into the fourth round at the U.S. Open last month, the surging teen has won 18 of her last 19 matches.

She lost to Russian Nadia Petrova in the round of 16 in Flushing, but avenged that setback by beating a top-seeded Petrova in last week's finale at the inaugural Thailand Open. At the U.S. Open, Vaidisova was booed off the court following her loss to Petrova after she smashed a ball into the crowd. Earlier in that match, the Czech star threw a water bottle onto the court in frustration, proving that she's still only 16.

Vaidisova's other recent titles came in finals against a couple of other rising stars on the women's circuit, as she topped Serbian Jelena Jankovic at the Korea Open and Frenchwoman Tatiana Golovin at the Japan Open.

"My game has improved and I'm happy, but I'm still going to keep working hard on everything overall," Vaidisova said after running the table in the exotic Bangkok.

Vaidisova won at least one match at all four majors this year, with her best showing coming in her favorite city, New York. She reached the third round at the Australian Open and Wimbledon and bowed out in the second at the French for a combined 8-4 record at the '05 Slams.

Idle this week, the still-growing Vaidisova now owns five career titles and is a brilliant 5-1 in six career finals -- all over the last two seasons. She lost to Venus Williams in a finale in Istanbul the week before this year's French Open.

Vaidisova only turned pro in 2003, but she's already up to a career-high No. 17 in the world, after opening this '05 campaign at No. 77. She's 15th overall in the WTA's Race to the Championships.

FYI, 12 of the top 15 ladies in the Race hail from Europe. The other three are Americans Lindsay Davenport, Venus and Serena Williams.

The youngest player in the top 20, Vaidisova is only the sixth woman to win five singles titles before her 17th birthday, joining Tracy Austin, Andrea Jaeger, Monica Seles, Jennifer Capriati and Martina Hingis.

That's pretty good company.

She's also the only player to win singles titles in three consecutive weeks this season. The last player to do that was Davenport last year in Stanford, Los Angeles and San Diego. And Vaidisova is one of only five women to have won three or more singles titles this year, joining Kim Clijsters, Davenport, Justine Henin-Hardenne and Maria Sharapova.

That's also pretty good company.

Vaidisova, who honed her skills at the famed Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida and captured the coveted Orange Bowl championship in 2003, has a solid all-court game, including a big ol' serve. And her groundstrokes remind me of the great Seles, another Bollettieri alumni.

The Prague resident is an impressive 45-14 this year and has pocketed just under $450,000 on the court. She's also getting paid as an "I Am What I Am" pitchwoman for Reebok.

Look for this tall blonde bomber to climb inside the top 10 in 2006.

BRADENTON - Fans appreciate her powerful serve, precise ground strokes and endurance. Marketing executives at Reebok and Yonex view her athletic, leggy physique and wholesome good looks as a means to sell products.

From the outside, 16-year-old Nicole Vaidisova appears to have the attributes necessary to become the next "big thing" in women's tennis. But Nick Bollettieri, who has worked with her since her arrival at his academy from the Czech Republic in 1999, says Vaidisova has an unseen quality possessed by champion performers.

"No one has to push her. She has the ambition to be the best in the world, and it's a driving force that comes through loud and clear," Bollettieri said. "Now that she is seeing what the tour is like, she's not content being the young plebe. She wants to be the seasoned veteran who establishes records.

"Nicole has an abundance of natural talent and is surrounded by a tremendous support team, starting with her father (and coach, Ales Kodat) and the people at IMG Academies. But most important, she has that fire. She is a perfect example of the kind of person I like to be involved with."

Some of her recent opponents can be forgiven if they don't share Bollettieri's enthusiasm. By winning the $200,000, Tier III Thailand Open last week in Bangkok with a 6-1, 6-7 (5), 7-5 victory against Nadia Petrova, Vaidisova became the first woman - OK, female - to win three tournaments in three weeks during the 2005 season.

Her previous victories this fall came in the Tier IV Korea Open and the Tier III Japan Open. Vaidisova will carry a 15-match winning streak into her final 2005 appearance at the $585,000, Tier II Advanta Championships in Philadelphia beginning Oct. 31.

"It definitely was a great three weeks, and you can't say you could do any better," Vaidisova said Wednesday during a conference call. "It's hard to stay focused for three weeks and not get satisfied. I really worked hard this whole year getting more consistent because I used to play great one tournament, then not so great the next.

"But I obviously have a long road ahead. I'm not where I want to be, so I can't just sit back. Everything has to get better - my volleys, serve, groundstrokes. Everything."

Vaidisova - who has risen to No. 17 in the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour rankings and has 2005 earnings of $360,616 - plans to spend the offseason with Kodat, Bollettieri and her IMG agent, Olivier van Lindonk, formulating a strategy to climb even higher.

Vaidisova reached the fourth round of the U.S. Open and advanced to the third round at Wimbledon and the Australian Open, signs she may be ready to contend at a Grand Slam event as soon as next year.

"She is definitely a contender to keep on going, but how many players are going to win a Grand Slam at 17?" Bollettieri said. "I would just continue to do what she is doing and not change the pattern."

As long as she is enjoying the climb, Vaidisova and her team probably have little to worry about.

"I'm having fun," said Vaidisova. "I like to practice, and I love to travel. It is still exciting, and that makes it easier for me."

Vaidisova, who won twice in 2004, is a shining example to scores of international players at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy. She practices on the NBTA courts when she is in town and works out at the International Performance Institute on the IMG Academies campus with physical therapist Dave Hogarth. She also is taking high school courses online.

"I came to the academy for three weeks, and I liked it, so I kept coming back," Vaidisova said. "I'm lucky to have a great professional team around me. Nick helped me a lot, and everything about it is good - the facility, the weather, the training."

But not everyone has taken advantage like Vaidisova, whose love for the sport shines through every time she takes the court.

With Nikki now being ranked higher than Jankovic, that currently places her at #7. (Possibly #8 if Dementieva accepts the WC).

Successful Vaidisova beating pressure, too

The latest young star of women's tennis, just 16 years old, hopes to shine on at Villanova.

By Ben Watanabe
For The Inquirer

In less than two years on the WTA Tour, Nicole Vaidisova has known little but success.

Vaidisova debuted in the world rankings after just her fourth pro event, and two weeks ago rose to a career high of No. 17. She arrives in Philadelphia for this week's Advanta Tennis Championships at Villanova having not lost in her last three tournaments.

So, she figures, why worry?

"Of course I get nervous on the court," Vaidisova said. "But if I win, I win. If I lose, I lose. There's no big pressure."

At 16, the native of Prague, the Czech Republic, is the latest rising teen star on the women's tennis circuit.

Seventh-ranked Venus Williams has withdrawn, but the event still includes WTA heavyweights Lindsay Davenport, Maria Sharapova and Amelie Mauresmo. Competition takes place at the Pavilion starting tomorrow.

Davenport, ranked No. 1, is the top seed. Sharapova, ranked No. 3, is the second seed, and Mauresmo, ranked fourth, is seeded third.

Also competing is Norristown native Lisa Raymond, who resides in Wayne.

Raymond, the No. 3-ranked doubles player, teamed with Alicia Molik to win the Advanta doubles title last year. She has one more chance to win the Advanta in her home state.

Because next year's WTA Tour Championships will move from Los Angeles to Madrid, Spain, tournament organizers eliminated Advanta from the 2006 schedule because it was unlikely top players would leapfrog across the Atlantic in back-to-back weeks.

But Vaidisova said she couldn't think that far ahead. By next year, she will be a griseled veteran at the ripe old age of 17.

The sites of her last three victories - Seoul, South Korea; Tokyo; and Bangkok, Thailand - might be nothing more than resume-filler by then.

Her next competition is all that is on her mind.

"It's obviously a big tournament, and the competition is pretty tough," Vaidisova said.

That match was a bit nerve wracking, but Nicole stormed back in the end. She plays doubles tomorrow, then back to singles on Friday vs Raymond or Gehrlein. I think she's got a clear path to the semis, and it would be great to see how she handles Mauresmo. (if Momo gets there of course!). Nicole has a great chance to get to the final and maybe take this title. It would be so great to finish the year out on an undefeated streak and get a top 16 seeding in Australia!!! I think her top 16 seeding is almost guaranteed at this point.

Vaidisova beats Koukalova at Advanta, extending win streak to 17

Associated Press

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Sixteen-year-old Nicole Vaidisova came back from a 1-4 deficit in the third set to defeat fellow Czech Klara Koukalova 4-6, 6-1,6-4 on Wednesday at the Advanta Championships in suburban Philadelphia.

In the process, Vaidisova extended her career-long winning streak to 17 consecutive matches, but said that is not a factor in her play.

"I don't really follow that too much," Vaidisova said. "Obviously, I won a couple of tournaments and I beat a couple of great players, but it's a new tournament."

After failing to gain any rhythm and losing handily in the first set, Vaidisova rebounded to dominate the second set before falling behind 1-4 in the third. But she quickly recovered, holding serve and winning five straight games to gain the victory.

"It was up and down the whole time," said Vaidisova, who improved to 26-2 in matches lasting three sets. "I just kept fighting (in the third set). I just told myself to try and anything could happen, and I turned it around somehow."

Vaidisova, ranked 19th in the most recent WTA world rankings, advances to face the winner of Thursday's match between American Lisa Raymond and Stephanie Gehrlein of Germany. Gehrlein took the place of Maria Sharapova, ranked No. 3 in the world, when she withdrew from the tournament Tuesday with a right hand injury.

Young Czech star dodges an upset

With each grimace of frustration from Nicole Vaidisova last night, the organizers of the Advanta Championships at Villanova's sparsely filled Pavilion shook their fists at the tennis gods, wondering what they had done to deserve such a run of misfortune.

The tournament had already lost much of its glitter when injury and illness sidelined Lindsay Davenport and Maria Sharapova after the sisters Williams turned their thumbs down on it a while back. In all, three of the top five seeds had dropped out of the field.

Now here was the seventh-seeded Vaidisova, the streaking 16-year-old Czech whose star is rapidly rising, on the verge of being extinguished by her more seasoned countrywoman, unseeded Klara Koukalova.

But in a match in which both players labored to gather momentum, Vaidisova, down by 1-4 in the third set, kept launching her laser serve, and the 23-year-old Koukalova wilted down the stretch. Vaidisova broke Koukalova twice and swept the last five games to advance to the quarterfinals with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 triumph.

"I just kept fighting," Vaidisova said. "She played great. Her ground strokes really worked, and I just kept telling myself to keep trying, that anything could happen. Somehow, I just turned it around. I know I was up and down the whole time, but like I said, I think she played a great match. She had not much to lose."

The 5-foot-11 Vaidisova, who is ranked 19th in the world and is the second-youngest player among the top 100, ran her victory streak to 17 straight matches and remained on a path to win her fourth consecutive tournament.

She is coming off three tournament wins in three weeks - in Seoul, South Korea; Tokyo; and Bangkok, Thailand, where she knocked off top-seeded Nadia Petrova on Oct. 16.

Vaidisova, who doesn't turn 17 until April 23, has the longest active match winning streak on the WTA Tour. Apparently, though, even the athletes from Prague know about the old cliché of taking them one at a time.

"No, not at all," she said when asked if she was conscious of her string of victories. "This is a new tournament. I don't really follow that that much."

Still, the run of wins has boosted her confidence as well as her ranking, which was 77th at the end of 2004....

OMFG!! Nikkie rules!!! Now crush the confidence of the momostodont!

I personally think this is going to be the last great test on this tournament. Finally after 4 tournaments she gets someone of the caliber of top 5 players. Mauresmo may not be dominating but she is no joke, and a simple minded amateur can't defeat her soi easily. Nicole happens to be, I believe 18 W consecutively, and now she goes to her Tier II graduation.

Personally I think she is going to win it, I even said if Sharapova stayed... she would have defeated her, and I think it is just going to happen.

Now about the pictures.... I love her in pink! :P Just like last year!

Nicole was awesome today :) , taking out a potentially tricky opponent (who she hasn't played before) with relative ease.

I can't imagine any of the big guns want her in their 4th round section for the AO. She could well be a dark horse going into the event (i hope the end of season break doesn't disrupt her form too much).

Hopefully she can pick up another couple of victories to end the season the best possible way.

as always when someone is doing well - alot of people claim necole still lacks "real" top10 wins.
momo tomrrow and possible lena the day after will be enough to guarentee that she'll be aknoledged next year as well as taken for a GS contender.
also - the silly arguament with Ivanovic fans will be over as nikki is obviously superior

then again - lose and evryone will dance all over it.

Thanks Shanomi Slam for the commentary. Personally I like both a lot, but I think Nicole has the luck of having been in American longer, and she didn't waste her time as much in juniors or challengers... and nowadays, it is noticeable how Nicole is better. Ana had a great run last year on Challengers, but now she is on the big leagues, nothing is as easy. Personally, I think perhaps Nicole could be greater than Maria Sharapova some day.

i got a bit carried away - all i mean is that this is a good oppurtunity to add some big wins to the 18 match streak, adding class and quality to the list if girls she's overcome this year.

It's crazy that she didn't reach a grand slam QF yet. but i think AO will be her equivilant to sharapova's Wimbledon - maybe she won't win it in the near future, but i believe she'll have mutiple wins there through her career - it just suites her so much.

Good luck today Nicole!!!! Win this match and the next one and finish the year off 20-0!!!! I actually like Nicole and Ana very much, but I do think it's too early to know who will have the better career. Nicole definitely has shown more consistency this year, but Ana has the GS quarterfinal on her resume. Ana also has been bothered by injury this year as well. I would love to see them both upset their Rnd of 16 opponents at the AO and meet each other in the next round!!! I honestly think these two are the future of women's tennis and I am hoping that they both can reach at the semis of a GS next year. I agree that Nicole should do well at AO. That surface can be tough, but it should suit her well if she prepares correctly. Nicole also has a edge over Ana in the fitness category as well, so that should show through in next year's events unless Ana focuses on this during the off season. Next year should be very exciting!!!!

The 16-year-old Vaidisova of the Czech Republic was seeking her fourth straight championship. She won titles at the Thailand, Korea and Japan Opens, becoming the only player to win three consecutive weeks on the WTA Tour this season.

"It was difficult for both of us to break, but I was able to take advantage of the opportunity," Mauresmo said.

A frustrated Vaidisova scolded herself a few times during the first set, and once angrily hit a ball into the net after losing a point.

One point away from losing the first set, Vaidisova rallied twice only to give it away after she double faulted.

"I'm always a lot into the matches," Vaidisova said. "She's a top player. She stepped up her game. It's a learning process and you get experience every match. I'm relieved. It was my final tournament of the season and I'm tired."
